About Wag! Pet Insurance

Headquartered in San Francisco and founded in 2015 by Joshua Viner, Jon Viner, Josh Metzger, and Brendan Rogers, Wag! matches pet parents with a variety of services, including pet walking, pet sitting, pet drop-ins, and pet boarding. It also offers a variety of pet insurance products, allowing a one-stop-shop experience for pet owners.

Pet families may use Wag! Compare to compare the leading pet insurance companies and hone in on the best deal. The insurer partners with Pumpkin, Pets Best, Fetch, Embrace, Figo, Spot, and more to provide coverage directly through them. According to the Wag! Website, you can “find the perfect plan for your beloved pet in 60 seconds or less.”

In addition, the company sells a number of Wag! Wellness plans to help you cover routine care costs, such as wellness exams and vaccinations. Wag! Compare is owned and administered by Compare Pet Insurance Services, Inc.

Wag! Pet Insurance Availability

Pet insurance through Wag! Compare and Wag! Wellness policies are available in all 50 states and Washington D.C. Once you plug in your information, Wag! Compare will display the pet insurance providers and plans that are available in your area.

Who is Wag! Pet Insurance For?

If you’re in the market for pet insurance and want to get several quotes from different insurers so you can hone in on the best choice for you and your pet, based on premiums, coverages, exclusions, and reputation, Wag! may come in handy. According to its Price Promise, you won’t find the same policy for a lower rate anywhere else.

I always recommend using a comparison service like Wag! that allows you to view multiple pet insurance quotes in one place, saving time and hassle. Also, Wag! vets the insurance companies it works with, giving you reassurance you’ll get what your pet deserves, without any unwelcome surprises.

Since Wag! is free to use, you can always check it out to determine if it’s a good fit. If not, you may request insurance quotes by visiting each pet insurer’s website directly.

What Does Wag! Pet Insurance Cover?

Pet insurance plans are not created equal. In fact, they can vary greatly. Since Wag! is a pet insurance comparison site that matches you with different pet insurers, your coverage will depend on the company and policy you choose.

You might opt for an affordable accident-only plan or a more comprehensive accident-and-illness policy at a higher price point. You’ll find that some pet insurance companies like Fetch, for example, offer robust coverage with many extras, such as reimbursements for vet-exam fees and name-brand prescription medications.

Other insurers, such as Spot sell accident-only plans with limited coverage for injuries like broken bones, lodged foreign objects, and toxic ingestions.

It’s your responsibility as a pet parent to explore all of the options that Wag! presents to you. If you’re unsure about an insurer or have a specific question about their coverage or services, don’t hesitate to reach out to them directly.

Wag! Wellness Plans

In addition to its pet insurance comparison service, Wag! offers its own annual wellness plans with a number of add-ons. Once you visit your vet for a covered service, you can fill out the Wag! reimbursement form and get reimbursed within 24 hours.

The cost of a pet insurance policy from Wag! depends on the following factors:

  • Location: If you live in New York City or another urban area, you’ll face higher premiums than someone in a small town in Iowa.

  • Pet breed: Some breeds, such as French Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, and German Shepherds are more prone to illnesses and injuries than others and in turn, cost more to insure.

  • Age: Senior pets come with higher pet insurance rates, making it a good idea to lock in coverage as soon as possible.

  • Coverage details: The pet insurance company and plan(s) you choose as well as your deductible, annual limits, and reimbursement level will all affect your premium.

How to Get a Wags! Pet Insurance Quote

To get pet insurance quotes from Wags!, visit the Wags! website and provide some basic information about yourself and your pet. Be prepared to share:

  • Your zip code and email address

  • Your first and last name

  • Whether your pet is a dog or cat

  • Your pet’s name, age, and breed

Once you do, Wags! will provide a number of options from different pet insurance companies and policies. If a plan piques your interest, you may click on “See What’s Covered” to get a list of coverages or “View This Plan” to get directed to the pet insurance company’s website, enter your billing information, and finalize your coverage.

I was surprised I couldn’t buy the policy on the Wag! Website but I guess it makes sense since they are just an affiliate that partners with other pet insurance companies. If they guarantee the lowest rates, I think it is worth filling out the form on their site.

If you’re interested in a Wag! Wellness Plan, you can buy one directly on the Wags! website. Simply choose the plan you’d like as well as any add-ons, enter details about your pet, and plug in your payment info. This is a pretty quick and straightforward process.

What is Not Covered

Exclusions depend on each pet insurance company and plan. However, many pet insurance policies do not cover the following:

  • Pre-existing conditions unless your pet has been cured and symptom/treatment free for a certain period of time

  • Elective procedures, such as ear cropping and tail docking

  • Pregnancy, birth, and breeding services

  • Hereditary disorders

  • Routine care services like wellness exams and vaccines

  • Experimental treatments that aren’t approved by the FDA

  • Alternative therapies, such as chiropractic care and acupuncture

  • Boarding fees

  • Prescription medications and drugs

  • Pet transportation costs

  • Dental treatments

  • Treatments and surgeries not tied to a covered condition

Before you sign on the dotted line with a pet insurance policy you find through Wag!, be sure to read the fine print. You should be aware of and agree to all of the exclusions listed in the policy documents.

Waiting Periods

All pet insurance companies have waiting periods. Let’s say you find a plan you like with a 14-day waiting period for injuries and illnesses. This means that during the first 14 days of your coverage, the pet insurance company won’t reimburse you for your vet bills.

Once the 14-day waiting period is up, however, your coverage will kick in and you may seek reimbursement for eligible claims, according to your plan terms.

While 14-days is industry standard, you’ll find that some insurers have shorter or longer waiting periods. For example, Pets Best has a 3-day waiting period for accidents whereas Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for both accidents and illnesses.

Coverage Limits

Most pet insurance companies let you choose your coverage limits, which can range from $2,500 to unlimited.

Your limit will be the maximum the insurer will pay for covered vet bills in a single policy year. If you decide on an unlimited annual limit, you won’t have to worry about any caps to your annual coverage. This may be worth the investment if you have a pet with expensive or ongoing health needs.

Reimbursement and Deductibles

In most cases, pet insurance companies let you pick from reimbursement levels ranging from 70% to 90%. However, some providers, such as Healthy Paws, for example, offer lower levels like 50% or 60%. In addition, you may choose from a number of deductible options, typically between $100 to $1,000.

Reimbursement level is the percentage of your vet bill the insurance company will cover after you meet your deductible. Deductible is how much you’ll owe out-of-pocket after a covered claim before the insurer steps in and pays for the remaining amount. A higher deductible means lower premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs so it’s up to you to decide what you prefer.

Claims and Customer Support

If you need to file a claim after you buy pet insurance through the Wag! comparison service, you’ll do so directly through the insurer. Wag! does not handle the claims process for its partners. While the claims process varies by insurance company, most of them require you to fill out a form online or via the mobile app and attach an itemized invoice from the vet.

Note that if you buy a Wags! Wellness plan, you can complete a reimbursement form on the Wag! website and get reimbursed within 24 hours.

When it comes to customer support, you’ll reach out to the pet insurance company directly as Wag! doesn’t handle this either. Some pet insurers offer 24/7 customer service via chat or a vet help line while others are only available during regular business hours.

What You Might Like

  • Multiple quotes in one space: Once you fill out the form and share details about your pet, Wags! will show you multiple quotes from different pet insurance companies so you can quickly compare them. This eliminates the hassle of having to complete many forms so you can pull quotes from each pet insurer’s company’s website directly. I really do appreciate the convenience of Wag! As I simply don’t have time to fill out a million forms.

  • Lower rates on pet insurance: Wags! offers a Price Promise, which will reimburse you the difference if you find a rate lower than what they offer within 24 hours of your purchase. According to Wags!, you can save up to $273 per year by using its pet insurance comparison service. In my opinion, this is the biggest selling point of using this comparison service.

  • Three tiers of wellness policies: If you’re seeking a wellness plan, you can get it directly from Wags!. The company advertises three different plans plus four add-ons, making it easy to customize your coverage. You can buy a plan directly on Wags! website.

What Wag! Could Do Better

  • Limited information on the Wag! website: Since Wags! provides a pet insurance comparison service and partners with other insurers, information about each policy is limited. You’ll need to visit each pet insurance company’s website to learn more about its offerings. In addition, if you move forward with a policy, you’ll need to read the terms and conditions carefully.

  • Doesn’t partner with every insurer: While Wag! pulls quotes from many reputable pet insurance companies, such as Fetch, Embrace, and Spot, it doesn’t work with every insurer. This means you might miss out on quotes and coverage options from some providers.

  • Potential fees for cancelling Wag! wellness plans: If you invest in a Wag! Wellness policy, it can be tough to cancel it. In the event you cancel after you request a reimbursement, you’ll owe a cancellation and won’t be refunded for any of the payments you made.

Wag! Pet Insurance Reviews by Real Customers

Of course, the Wag! website makes it seem like the pet insurance comparison service is a great option for pet parents. However, I wanted to see how real customers feel about it so I read reviews and ratings on TrustPilot and Better Business Bureau (BBB).

At the time of this writing, Wag! has 3.8 out of 5 stars, based on over 5,500 reviews on TrustPilot and holds an F rating on the BBB. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any reviews on the pet insurance comparison service or wellness plans.

All of the reviews were related to pet sitting, dog walking, and other other services Wag! offers. This made me a bit hesitant to use Wag! but I still think it’s worth a shot since it’s free and comes with a lowest price guarantee. I really have nothing to lose.

Bottom Line

Wag! Pet Insurance is a pet insurance comparison service, rather than a direct insurer. You can use it to quickly and easily compare pet insurance quotes from multiple reputable insurance companies and zero in on the best deal for your unique situation.

The service is free to use and guarantees the lowest premiums. Wag! also offers its own wellness plans to help cover routine care costs.
