What's Covered?

Spot Pet Insurance covers any injuries, accidents, and illnesses, including emergency treatments and diagnostics like X-rays and MRIs. Your Spot insurance policy also pays for medications, prescription foods, and behavioral treatments conducted by a vet. Spot’s coverage also includes hereditary and chronic conditions, and will pay for alternative therapies like acupuncture if they are used to treat a covered condition.

What Doesn't Spot Pet Insurance Cover?

Spot Pet Insurance does not cover any pre-existing conditions, even if they are curable. In addition, the company doesn’t cover any routine care, such as teeth cleaning or annual physicals, unless you purchase a preventative care plan as an add-on. If you choose an accident-only plan, only medical expenses directly resulting from an accident (not an illness) are covered.

Waiting Periods

Any insurance policy from Spot Pet Insurance does not take effect until 14 days after you purchase. Spot’s 30-day guarantee means that you will receive reimbursements within a month of filing your claim.

Coverage Limits

Spot Pet Insurance offers annual payout limits from $2,500 per year all the way up to unlimited coverage.

Reimbursement and Deductibles

Spot Pet Insurance offers three reimbursement models: 70%, 80%, and 90%. You can also choose a deductible of $100, $250, $500, $750, or $1,000 per year for your insurance plan.

Claims and Service

Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t require approval before you visit a vet or emergency clinic. Instead, you can simply submit your claim for reimbursement afterwards by using the Spot mobile app or Spot’s online portal. Claims can be submitted up to 270 days after treatment.

To file a claim, all you need to submit is an image of your invoice. In some cases, Spot may follow up with you or the vet to obtain your pet’s full medical records or additional details on the treatment. Spot doesn’t provide an estimate for how long claims take to pay out, but you can check the status of your claim at any time through your online account.

If you need help filing a claim, you can get in touch with Spot’s customer support team by phone or email. Support is available from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM ET, Monday to Friday.

What You Might Like

Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable insurance plans that cover accidents, illnesses, and injuries after a short 14-day waiting period. You don’t have to get approval before taking your pet into a clinic, emergencies included. Spot will reimburse you for any covered treatment from any licensed vet or clinic in the U.S.

What Spot Pet Insurance Could Do Better

Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t cover any pre-existing conditions, and preventative care treatment costs extra.

Bottom Line

Spot Pet Insurance, recognized as one of the best pet insurance options, offers flexible pet insurance policies with customizable deductibles, coverage limits, and reimbursement rates. You can also choose to add preventative care to your plan or opt for an accident-only plan. Spot’s coverage might not work with all budgets,  but the fact that you can take your pet to any licensed vet or emergency clinic will be a plus for some pet owners.
