Overview

The Aspiration Zero credit card was designed to help consumers cut their carbon footprint. With this card, every purchase you make results in a tree being planted to offset your carbon emissions. You can also round up your purchases to the nearest dollar to plant a second tree.

When you get to 60 trees planted in a month - which is either 60 transactions or 30 rounded-up transactions - you’ve gone carbon-neutral according to Aspiration’s calculations. As a reward, the company will give you 1% cash back on all your purchases for that month. You can track how many trees you’ve planted each month through the Aspiration mobile app.

Suitable for?

The Aspiration Zero credit card is most suitable for consumers who want to reduce their environmental impact. Planting a tree or two with every purchase helps to offset your carbon footprint. In addition, Aspiration’s mobile app scores merchants based on their social impact and eco-friendliness, so you can focus your spending at stores that match your values.

The downside to the Aspiration Zero card is that its rewards program doesn’t provide as much cash back as traditional cash back credit cards. You only receive 0.5% cash back on eligible purchases until at least 60 trees are planted within a month, and even then you’re limited to 1% back. In addition, the Aspiration Zero credit card has a $60 annual fee. So this credit card is most suitable for those who prioritize sustainability over cashback rewards.

    I signed up with Aspiration last year…

    I signed up with Aspiration last year and have been testing the app out before deciding to do a full switch of all my accounts from Bank of America. I really want to give this bank a chance but I've consistently had major issues with basic features of the mobile and web app. I am a software developer and with the number of bugs I've seen in the short time I've used it, I have big concerns about the reliability and security of Aspiration in general. Until these issues are fixed, I don't feel I can trust them with my money anymore. Below are the two most concerning issues I've encountered, but I've seen other more minor bugs using the mobile app as well (one during signup). First Issue: I was able to make two transfers into my Spend account successfully, but after that they have all failed with a message saying it can't verify the funds in my external account, and with incorrect "to" and "from" accounts in that autogenerated email message. It was very concerning that the transfer appeared to have gone in the wrong direction. At first I thought I made a mistake when setting up the transfer, but after trying 2-3 more times the same issue happened again. I repeatedly checked my external account balance which had way more than enough funds to complete the transfer. Transfers to the Save account still worked no problem. Customer service was very nice about this issue when I requested help, though it's still not resolved for me after 2 weeks and I get more and more concerned about having my money w/ Aspiration each day that passes. I was asked to provide proof of how much money was in my external account with screenshots, and if I did this then engineering could start looking into it. It also felt a bit weird to be asked to do this, as if the engineers didn't believe there could possibly be a bug and wouldn't spend any time testing it unless forced. Once I provided this proof, I received a thank you and they let me know they will follow up when they have more information, but haven't heard anything else for 17 days. Second Issue: I signed up for the Aspiration Zero credit card recently and it came time to make a payment. I attempted payment on the mobile app and got an error, so I tried paying on the web app and got another error. I decided to try again another day, but it still didn't work so I emailed customer service so I wouldn't make a late payment. On the day before the payment was due, I tried again but got a message saying it was after the 5pm ET cutoff time so I'd have to send the next day (one day late). Customer service eventually responded the next day, providing a number I could call to make payments but by then the payment was already late. Luckily, they were able to confirm that any late fee would be waived for this payment but I am hesitant to spend more on that card if it's this difficult to make payments. I don't want to risk my credit score being lowered for late payments, or to be charged interest when I'm trying to pay on time. I really hope Aspiration can improve but I'll be looking for an alternative sustainable bank in the meantime.

    Opened Spend & Save accounts recently (beginning of March 2022). So far, the transition from another bank has been pretty effortless, and the customer service has been outstanding. I wish there was the ability to schedule repeated bill payments, and having to do some things via my phone app makes it a little frustrating sometimes, but it hasn't been a huge deal breaker. I haven't received the interest on my accounts yet, I'm still trying to figure out if the 30 and 60 days occur every 30 business days/calendar days/every start of the month, etc., but I'm sure time will help me to figure it all out.

    I have banked with Aspiration for several years.

    I have banked with Aspiration for several years now. I don't remember how I found them but I'm glad I did. They are not the only bank I have but the one I use most often. As my personal bank, they are never further away than the end of my arm, where my phone is most of the time. In my experience, the app works flawlessly with either android or iPhone. (I use both). Live customer service is available and very accommodating. An added benefit is working with a commercial entity that is environmentally responsible. Working with Aspiration is just a Win all the way around.

    I opened my account with Aspiration on 2/13/22 - On 2/14 there was an unauthorized withdraw from my primary to Aspiration, and 2 other $ 1,000 unauthorized withdraws for 2/15 & 2/16 - I called immediately and was told they would cancel the 2 upcoming and revert the first already posted. This never happened. They closed my account and deactivated my logins, informing me that the department will review and send me a check. After 2 months of calls and complaints I received a check from Aspiration for $ 4,008.14, deposited on 4/15 - Now the check is being held by my bank, attending an investigation "for unusual activity" on Aspiration's bank account. This is unheard of, deception, lies and excuses every call. If the check doesn't clear I will report them to the BBB, FBI and open an investigation through my bank, Wells Fargo.

    Fantastic Resolution to Banking Issue

    I had an issue where my card was declined with an online order, and the vendor mistakenly told me it was an issue with my bank. Calling in to Aspiration gave me the clarity I needed to go back to the vendor and get the issue resolved, and I was also able to get answers on a couple other questions for things that will be coming up in my future. Absolutely fantastic customer service, and, at least when I called, and for the department I called, there was next to no wait time.

    Aspiration is an amazing bank. I was hesitant to switch to fully digital, but they're always right there to help even if it's not in person. I'm thankful for them, really. I can't wait to see how much they'll continue to improve as time goes on.

    I have had 2 very big issues with this…

    I have had 2 very big issues with this financial firm. The first being that I was completely blindsided one day about a year ago when I got an email saying my account number was changed and my debit card was deactivated for potential suspicious activity on my account AFTER I had already spoken to someone on the phone and confirmed the transactions were made by me. This led me to have to change all of my autopay accounts and even resulted in a few late fees from accounts I forgot to change. I have never ever heard of a whole account number being changed for security, only debit card deactivation. This was extremely frustrating but I got over it. Then, 5 months ago, I tried to transfer money into my savings account and the transfer was "rejected" with no additional information. I called and emailed about this and was told their engineers were "working on it". 5 months later and my savings account will still not allow transfers into it and the reply from customer service is the same - the engineers are "working on it". I am a software engineer myself and know for a fact it should never take 5 months to troubleshoot an issue like this, especially with multiple people working on it. All this tells me is that they don't care I am having this issue and have not even tried to resolve it. I will be moving my money elsewhere.

    Oh yes my name is Rashad Lee Ordway I am 34 years old going on 35 soon I'm an Aries yes I would like to write to you guys and let you guys know that you guys are doing a good job now as far as receiving money transfers from different places of being which is a legit and understanding of all I just feel like that you guys should go a little bit deeper and start pleasing your customers a little bit more better than what you guys have been doing don't get me wrong it's okay for you guys to have policies and rules because without them too in this world we all are nothing at all I just feel and I just and kind of a little bit upset to the point where why is it so hard for you guys to except money that is legit that is perfect that is good that is great trustworthy and I do mean trustworthy whether it's coming from overseas or whether it's coming from here in the United States of America deep down here in the United States of America a person should be able to get their money regardless whether it's a different color or not whether it's green. I don't understand why is it so hard for a person to not be jealous or not be concerned about a person who is getting money I do not understand that when that person which is the person behind the desk want to get jealous or feel some type of way or don't know how to mind their business in general about transferring money whether it's has something to do with it being spiritual or not people needs to understand that people needs to get the things that they want needs and desires for and you guys can take it how you want to take it but people have problems not just because of life no people have problems and when I say problems I'm talking about problems like such as trying to get food in the house trying to take care of themselves financially from head to toe trying to take care of the bills which are dude every single month and every single once in awhile not right now or not at the end of the month I'm just saying in general why is it so hard for a person or a person's to accept money which is in through a bank account which is legit which is trustworthy and I do mean trustworthy I just don't understand it why is it so hard for a person to just do their damn job excuse my language even though I don't have a job I'm sorry it is what it is I don't know what it's like to have a real job I'm sorry it is what it is because I was born and raised different I'm just going to say that. Now take it how you guys want to take it because life is life and reality is reality and deception is deception which is in a good way not a bad way a good way take it how you want to take it analyze it how you guys want to analyze it discuss it how you guys want to discuss it feel as you please because you guys know that I'm right because the customer is always right that's what they used to say back in the day whenever something occurs or whenever that a person supposed to receive or get something or whatever the case may be to life and in this lifetime so I suggest that you guys take this post likely I suggest that you guys take this in scribe and also I want you guys to take this in strive to the point where you guys need to go in eternally deep deep deep deep deep deep deep deep deep deep down into the system what's the system is broken don't lie about that there's no doubt about it that we all know all of us in this world even you the person that is reading this right now you know exactly that this system in this world is broken whether you like it or not whether you take it and strive or not the system in this world is broken but nobody seems to wonder... Nobody seems to care.... Nobody seems to sit down and be like quote unquote let's fix the system....????? But continue to keep on not taking care of your good job of you being quote unquote the best customer service agents in the world intelligent or not because deep down inside that you guys truly don't give a damn about the next person but you guys self God don't like ugly I'm just going to say that but I'm not ugly I'm not being disrespectful I'm not being rude I'm not being anything in the book that you guys think that I am being right now I'm just sharing my opinion I'm just sharing my thoughts I'm just sharing how I feel at this moment in time about the situation that be happening which is the rejections of money just a simple fact that it is money it's just paper with people and possibly people who is dead get over it I'm not saying that you should not represent dead people because they are dead especially on a piece of paper especially on something that we've been having for years decades upon decades upon decades upon decades green money whether you guys like it or not you guys are just going to have to get over the simple fact that we just have money and we just been trying to transfer it that's it that's all no more no less and I'm going to end it like that and hopefully hopefully you guys could do a better job.
