Advantages Over Regular Bank

Discover online savings and money market accounts hold a number of advantages over the more traditional banking options. To begin with, there is no minimum deposit requirement for opening a savings account. So, anyone can open an account at any time. You also don’t need to maintain a specific balance within the savings account to avoid being penalized.

What’s more, the Discover online savings account has no monthly maintenance fees.

Naturally, with an online savings account from Discover, you also get the added bonus of digital convenience. You’ll never have to worry about standing in lines, waiting for a teller to get off the phone, or wrestle for a parking space with these accounts. All of your transactions can be carried out online, including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, account management, and account overview checkups. (And that’s without even mentioning the mobile app that we’ll cover in a section below.)

You may also earn more interest with a Discover online savings account than you would with a regular bank savings account. For these reasons, Discover’s online savings account is an option for anyone who wants to leave some extra cash in an account where it will accrue value over time.

Cutting-Edge Banking Services

Discover online banking has features that run the gamut, from total account control to effortless money transfers and more. These are the best features we noticed during our review:

  • Mobile check deposit

We’ll cover the awesome mobile app a little further down in the review, but this feature needed to be highlighted up here. You can scan a check with your smartphone and have it deposited directly into your account instantly. This is an amazing way to fund your online savings account, and it’s also the next step in convenient banking solutions.

  • Money transfers

Discover also lets you fund your account by setting up automatic transfers from your checking or savings accounts as well. Bank transfers are allowed from any Discover account or another external bank’s account. And you can even mail a check directly to Discover if this is more your speed.

Traditional Banking Services

Accessing your funds will depend on what type of account you open. The savings account lets you withdraw via online transfers, domestic or international wire transfers, or official bank checks. There are no personal checks or debit cards involved.

  • Cashback checking account

Discover offers customers 1% cashback on qualifying debit card purchases every month (up to $3,000), so you can earn money when you spend it.

  • CDs and IRAs

Discover also offers its customers IRA CDs and traditional CDs. These are available in terms ranging from 3 months all the way up to 10 years. Obviously the longer the term you sign up for, the better interest rate you'll land as well.

Discover also has a huge network of 60,000 ATMs across the U.S.

Interest Rates and Fees

Discover’s online savings account offers 4.30% APY. Considering the fact that most major traditional banks like Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America offer APYs of 0.01%-0.04%, 4.30% is generous. Plus, interest on your Discover online savings account is compounded daily.

In terms of fees, Discover has an impressive list of $0 fees among the list of regular fees it charges. You won’t be charged anything for many of the usual services, including:

  • Monthly maintenance
  • Money Market Accounts
  • Official bank check issued
  • Expedited delivery for official bank checks issued
  • Incoming wire transfers
  • Deposited item returned
  • Stop payment order
  • Insufficient funds
  • Account closure
  • Excessive withdrawal fee

Customer Service

Discover has 24/7 customer service every single day of the year via a toll-free phone number. There’s also an international number that you can reach customer assistance within case you’re overseas. Discover has an in-depth FAQ section and an ATM locator on the site as well.

Mobile Apps

Discover has a sleek mobile app that makes it easy to access your online savings account from anywhere in the world at any time of day. Some of the most exciting features we found on the app were:

  • Mobile check deposit

This lets you quickly snap a picture of a check using your smartphone or tablet and have it instantly deposited into your online savings account.

  • Easy transfers

The mobile app also lets you transfer from one account to another. You can make transfers from another one of your Discover accounts or from a different bank altogether. Note that outside bank transfers will take longer (up to 5 business days), while Discover bank transfers will show up in your account instantly.

  • Fast logins

The Discover online savings account mobile app lets you quickly access your account on the go. You can even use biometric or facial recognition to alleviate the annoyance of logging into your account without compromising security.

  • Quickview

Finally, the mobile app has a feature known as Quickview. It lets you quickly see your account balance without having to log into your actual account.

Security

Two threats today are data theft and ID hacking, and Discover has protection for you against them both. To begin with, Discover uses Secure Socket Layer technology that encrypts all of your data, so nobody can access any personal or account information of yours. Your account is also protected by a user-generated password. Discover continuously monitors all of your accounts and account activities for possible fraudulent activities, and it even has a dedicated Fraud Unit to keep close tabs on you.

If your identity is stolen, Discover has your back. It offers $0 liability protection, which means you won't have to pay a dime if there are any unauthorized online or mobile transactions associated with your accounts.

Conclusion

Discover online banking offers customers several products including convenient checking accounts with 1% cashback on monthly debit card purchases, high-yield savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs, and IRAs with equally impressive interest rates. Add to that good customer service, low or no fees, and one of the best mobile apps we’ve seen, and Discover quickly becomes a good option for online banking.

Always been responsive via customer service at all hours and works well for all credit card and banking needs. Be aware that bank transfers to this account take way too long to become available (I've had waits of a week just to be able to spend my money).

Help when needed
Discover notified me when someone tried to make a fraudulent purchase on my card. I'm so thankful for that notice cuz I didn't make the purchase & Discover did help me close out old card, get new one & I didn't have to pay for all the help. I can't thank them enough for taking care of me. Eternally grateful! I so appreciate what they did.

Stabbed in the back.
Discover has truly disappointed me. After being a loyal customer for over a decade, I recently discovered that my credit card limit was slashed without any prior notification. My once substantial $25,000 credit limit has now been reduced to a mere $8,000. This sudden change not only left me shocked but also caused my credit card utilization to skyrocket and consequently, my credit score took a significant hit. It's disheartening to see how Discover can stab its long-term customers in the back without any justification or warning.

UnTrustworthy Company
Terrible inadequate people working at Discover. They let a fraudster steal thousands of dollars from my account. They don’t care about the consumer. They are not doing anything about spoofing numbers pretending to be from Discover. I truly hate for one moment I trusted them with my money. This is not the end!!!

Dispute Process: Disappointing, Frustrating, Confusing, Unfair, despite IRREFUTABLE Evidence
Consumers, be prepared to have enough patience to self-advocate. I made a purchase and the merchant gave in writing, one FULL YEAR (365 days) no questions asked 100% Money Back Guaranteed if it turned out to be of NO VALUE at ANYTIME within that time frame, and all that's needed is to send an email requesting refund (with several months left, I was nowhere close to a full year) After trying the product, I discovered several issues that made it didn't work for me. I contacted the Merchant first but because there was no response, I called Discover and opened a dispute. I fully explained the entire situation and said I'm not disputing the charge-its just that I"ve not heard from the Seller regarding the Full refund. Discover claimed they'll launch an investigation. However, they reversed the credit in Merchant's favor, stating the Merchant wasn't required to submit documents. Yet they sided with the Merchant and gave me a very difficult time requesting PROOF even though Merchant already wrote PROOF in Subject Line of correspondence that mattered. (PS: see more detailed explanation about documents in proceeding paragraphs: I was confused because I was told if they needed docs from me, they'll call me if it's necessary. Needless to say, I was not called and by the time I saw update, the credit was already reversed. I called immediately and was told I can upload docs and they'll reopen case. I uploaded 6-7 documents (PROOF of email from Merchant regarding refund, correspondence, receipt, etc) YET that wasn't enough for Discover. I wasted so much of my time and energy on the phone with them, as I was at a loss about the additional docs they were asking for. I was told they need: Document from the Merchant that he promised a Refund, What date should I receive the refund and to which account it should be credited. This requests was ridiculous because they already had PROOF -the very detailed 3 page email that Merchant sent as "PROOF" in Subject Line which laid out the policies for FULL REFUND at anytime For a FULL YEAR 100% money Back Guarantee-No questions asked. I kept saying the refund/credit is to be placed back to the method of payment from which the purchase was made (ie. Discover Card) it was beyond frustrating to deal with customer service reps-as nothing they were saying made sense--they initially credited the amount to the Discover card-the card I used to make the purchase before reversing it, but now they needed info from Merchant to state where should purchase be credited??? Make that make sense. The hardest thing was hearing them say without these things, I'll not receive the credit-but I can contact the local government and file complaint, or the FTC etc. My energy was so depleted after dealing with Discover reps that I decided to give up on following up. It was evident to me that I was getting nowhere with them, and the entire process began to sap my energy. Discover NEVER assisted me with the dispute-instead they conjured all sorts of additional conditions, despite the fact that legally those conditions were already met. I'm still beyond discombobulated and distraught as a result of my experience throughout this process. It made me realize there's lack of care for customers with honest disputes and the dispute process with Discover will frustrate you to the very end. In the end, it was the Merchant who created the solution but I had to painstakingly send multiple emails to merchant. Discover did nothing to assist me in this matter; had it not been for the Merchant honoring the very email that I sent Discover as PROOF regarding the promised Refund, the dispute would be a lost cause. At this point it's useless for me to notify Discover of this complaint, I spent so much time on the phone repeatedly explaining the unfairness and confusion regarding their requests and it fell on deaf ears. It's unfair for me to have spent time feeling like despite evidence already provided, they insisted on things that were not necessary. The fact that a merchant was not required by them to present documents during the dispute but they sided with the merchant surprised me. Then it happens that it was the Merchant (after several emails between Merchant and myself), who issued a full refund as promised in evidence.

Discover threatening services
Discover is one of the worst card provider I have ever seen. I had them since I arrived in US 3 years ago. I have never missed a payment too. A few days ago, they threatened to close my account if I don't provide them permissions to look at my irs tax returns. Worst lender. They disabled my card without any notice. Stay away from them. They are not trustworthy people

The worst bank I’ve ever seen
The worst bank I’ve ever seen. If you plan to open an account with this bank, first read this: 3 months ago I ordered a credit card from the Discovery Bank, and I was interested in the fact that they quickly approve the credit limit, the card quickly approved me, delivered in 14 days, but I could only use it for one month. Then I got a message that I had to confirm my identity with a notary within two weeks, or they’d block my account. I got technical support and tried to explain the situation that I work 6 days a week and I do not physically have time to find a notary (Generally with such a request from the bank in the first). I asked you to extend that time from two weeks to four weeks, to what did the cheerleaders say, "Okay, four weeks is the maximum we can give you." What do you think? My card was blocked two weeks after I sent them all the paperwork. When asked why they blocked it, they said I filled out my paperwork at the wrong notary, I only needed a bank notary. After a couple of days (My card is still blocked) I went to the bank where I asked the notary to fill out the correct document, everything looked okay and I sent it. 10 days later I called the bank and asked if they reviewed my documents, they replied that yes, but can not accept them, as the notary did not fill in the field "Notary Commission/Identefication numbder" One reservation, I live in New Hampshire, here do not use this number. I have only one question, how a notary who checks my documents may not know this, because the document says that the notary has confirmed them in NH. I asked them to talk to the manager of their department, and they told me he wasn’t there, but he could call me back in two days (it was 10:00 AM at the time) but I still had to go back to the bank and ask the notary to fill out my form. So I did, the whole story, in the column "Notary Commission/Identefication numbder" Write "N/A in New Hampshier", send, 14 days, no answer, I call the bank, and they tell me that my date of birth is not readable in the document. (At that point I just felt like I was in a circus) 3 times I sent the document, and 3 times I faced incompetence of employees. I asked the support guy, "Can you read my birthday?" And he said to me, "Yes sir, I can see here *Calls my date of birth*, but the notary’s department said it’s unreadable, so I can’t help it. He added that if I didn’t confirm my identity in two days my account would be completely blocked. I asked you to talk to the manager, and I was told that he wasn’t there as usual, but he could call me back. SPOILER: The manager hasn’t called me once. At the end, I was told that if I didn’t confirm my identity in two days, my account would be permanently blocked. I did all the same waiting 14 days, and I got a message that my account had been blocked. I’m dialling the bank to find out what’s wrong again. Why this time they could not confirm the document. The support person says, "I see the comment that we called the notary once, he didn’t pick up, so we couldn’t confirm your identity. We cannot recreate your account because it is blocked, you can try to create a new one. Here’s what I can tell you. No company or bank has sucked as much nerve as Discovery Bank. I think if there’s a bank in Hell, it’s called Discovery Bank. As a result, I used a card for 1 month, spent 64 dollars out of 1000, (I paid it before state) And then 2 months met with employees of the Discovery Bank who are either not so interested in their work that would Google that NH could have other laws, The libor is so not motivated to provide quality service that even after two requests to contact the manager, the manager can call you back only in a dream. Either Discovery Bank decided to recruit Or the Discovery Bank decided to recruit people who can’t parse complex numbers, like dates of birth. I don’t know, you’ll deduce for yourself. But I assure you, if you have the opportunity to open an account with another bank, in any case, TD Bank, American Bank, Chase Bank, open there, avoid Discovery, such experience that was with them, I would not even wish the enemy.

I hit rock bottom and my almost ten…
I hit rock bottom and my almost ten years of no missed payments history was crushed. Thank you SoFi. Thank you Discover personal loans. Thank you Experian. I appreciate all of your help. My goal was to consolidate my debt, I said "almost ten years with no missed payments, someone is ought to notice the effort it takes to hold on tight that many years." Right, think again. Discover was my first credit card out of high school and almost made it ten years without a missed payment. Still, turned me down when I needed to consolidate my debt. Crushed.

Overall
Overall, it's an ok card but the representatives at the call centers do not know how to do basic math when they calculate your transactions. It's really funny because I know what's on my statement and the correct charge while they do it wrong. I asked them when the pending charges will fall off because it's been pending for 5 days and the lady said months. Imagine waiting months for a charge to fall off. That's hilarious. You're better off just doing your own math.

Unfortunately Applied for a personal loan
Applied for a personal loan. I have no debt except a reasonable car payment - and a credit score of 827. I was turned down for a loan and their reasons were completely ridiculous. The process took DAYS. not next day as they advertise. Multiple calls from people who apparently have no idea what they are doing. Now I have a hard credit pull from this scam of a company. DO NOT do business with them. *update - I got a Lightstream loan almost instantly - much better choice.

Liquidity issues at Discover ?
This bank is withholding my funds, and ask for unreasonable proof of identity while I am in Europe on vacation - like a picture of my birth certificate, SS card or IRS document with the SS# on it - who goes on vacation with these documents? Their debit card doesn't work outside the US, so all I saved up in that account is inaccessible to me in Europe. After passing all security challenges I put in place when I opened the account years ago, they now want a Photo ID with a selfie. They don't send the verification SMS to Europe, with the login code when entering the account online. I spent an hour calling from Europe and they simply froze my account. I request they close the account and transfer the balance to another US bank account I had for 30 years, and on file with Discover - no they can't do that, I was told. When I asked how would I have all the detailed and security information if I’m not the account owner, I was told that fraudsters have their way. I wonder now if they are liquidity issues? I suggest that if someone has an account with Discover with a balance of more than a couple of thousand, withdraw it asap, who knows what’s really going on with their finances.

Discover violates repayment plan
I began a repayment plan with Discover Financial in 2022 to pay off the balance of my credit card instead of accepting a settlement which would have closed my account. I understood that the card would continue to have no available credit until a point where the account was re-evaluated. I've been in the process of improving my credit and paying off creditors starting with the least amount owed. Since then, I've paid off a car, paid off one credit card in full to re-establish a line of credit and made an agreement to pay another off 2 months from now. Once this was paid off, I would pay at least $500 a month to Discover instead of the $250 (twice the minimum agreed upon) I've paid on time since the agreement. I've been informed now that despite not missing any payments since beginning this payment plan, that my account is closed. This is a breach of contract. I was never advised that in order to maintain an "open" account I could not use, that they would create some arbitrary deadline to repay the entire balance. When you discuss repayment plans, make them put it in writing. Get transcripts of calls. Record them and advise them they're being recorded if it's legal in your State. And if you're considering Discover, I'd advise not to at all. I thought they would honor their obligations according to the positive feedback they used to have. Something must've changed. They're covering potential losses in the event of a recession, so they're closing accounts to reduce risk. How is "no credit available" a risk to them?

Horrible experience
If your looking for a credit card that will protect your money Discover is not it. They go in favor of the merchant with disputed transactions. At first they said they would credit it and even though I provided documents because they couldn't get a response from the merchant they reversed the credit and had the audacity to report my account as a disputed account. Stay away at all costs!! My sister's credit card (a different company) took care of the dispute for the same illegitimate transaction no questions asked and she didn't even submit proof through documents. Look for a bank that works for you!!

AVOID DISCOVER BANK ACCOUNTS
Somebody posed as me and fooled Discover into doing a wire transfer into their Chase bank account to the tune of $12,300. They did a SIM card swap/phone takeover and I had no control over my phone because this jerk took over all access...nobody could reach me because the calls all went to him. Even when the police officer called my number, this jerk was still answering! Since the call came from a known device/number they said they did nothing wrong and will not be returning my money. Funny thing is the call I received from the fraudster was in fact Discover's phone number. The police that took the report said anybody can change their phone to show any called id they want. When I received the call from "Discover" regarding this, the caller ID showed I was actually getting a call from Discover so I had no reason to believe it was anybody else until I saw I had $3.00 in my account. Completely devastating for my family. They are completely uncooperative and are NOT returning our money. PLEASE, PLEASE stay away from Discover. I would hate for anybody to live the same nightmare.

Applied for a personal loan with a great credit score but was denied because they made no attempt to verify identity
Husband applied for a personal loan with a credit score over 800 and 7% credit usage. They asked for a copy of his driver’s license, a copy of his Social Security card, a copy of a bank statement or utility bill, and bank statements for past three months. I thought this was going way overboard for this credit scenario on a $12K loan. It was three days before we logged in without any notification from them to check my application status, where we found out they declined the loan because they could not confirm his identity. What couldn’t they confirm? We supplied all the information they asked for, and they just closed out the application without so much as a phone call or asking any questions. We called, and the representative tried to pass it off as a problem with his credit report. I just pulled the credit reports, where there was nothing unusual. Now, his score dropped eight points because of the hard inquiry. Consequently, this has made it harder to shop for another loan as the quoted rates are now higher. Bogus! Thanks a lot, Discover!

Can't trust Discover - Cardmember aggreement allows them to steal!
Discover's Cardmember Agreement and business practices are disgusting! It is clear from my payments and activity that I was trying to avoid interest charges. I regret not checking my account earlier to notice the 5 months of interest charges at 23.99% caused because Discover took my final payment to be applied to my 0% $12,000 balance transfer in October 2022 for the final balance of $4,111.05 and applied it to charges other than my $12,000 balance transfer that expired in November 2022, forcing $282.59 in total interest charges to my account. I believed that I could trust Discover since I set responsible automatic monthly payments and made zero purchases. I will never trust this fraudulent company with my finances and will advise others not to either. An ethical company would do better by its customer with facts as clear as mine and refund me their mistake of $282.59 in interest charges that I did everything right to avoid. I spoke to 5 supervisors that promised to resolve the issue and get back to me - none did. I made a claim through the BBB, but Discover didn't respond to my facts. Discover was able to steal my money because of their Card Member Agreement - BEWARE!!!

I was denied twice, reached out to a friend who sent me a link to discover, it took almost a month to be verified but they came through. Needed an urgent card and Anthony from Chicago ( should be given a raise), made sure I got a new card the next day. Thank you for helping international student, your company is amazing. Within 24 hours of activation of my first credit card with Discover, I had my account frozen pending identity verification. After providing the information and unlocking my card, another department froze my card and sent me a message saying that I needed to provide consent for the IRS to give them my last two years of taxes to prove my identity. When I argued that my taxes shouldn’t be required for verification of my identity, they told me that they could use my last 3 months of bank statements and a notery form as identification verification. I believe that I am being lied to and treated as if I am undereducated. I am willing to bet caucasian customers from larger cities are not treated like this.

Discover scammed me with Coleman…
Discover scammed me with Coleman furniture. Coleman furniture is well known for scamming its customers by all means necessary. just look up pissed consumer online. Long story short Coleman furniture wants me to pay restocking fees for furniture that NEVER made it to my door step. Discover initially gave me back my money and said the decision was final. Then went back and credited me for a whole lot less. I have all of my proper documentation showing I'm telling the God honest truth concerning this matter. The thing is yhe delivery company lied to coleman and sided with them. I'm NOT paying for furniture I've never received or was notified of. I never got a notification of anything until I filed my dispute. Discover went along with Coleman furnitures lies and I'm I refuse to pay for something I didn't receive. If discover wants to make this issue right they need to do the right thing on my behalf. If not that's fine too. Again we're living in bad times. Folks aren't paying for things they've never received. Does discover think I've got fool written across my forehead???? Try again slicksters. What goes around comes around.

Infuriating & greedy.
To be real I kind of blame myself for putting so much faith into an online bank. I have a separate bank checking account and I transfer my savings into discover so I can receive the interest benefits discover promises in action. That held truthful, but when it came TIME to withdraw the savings I learned that I can’t. Wtaf it’s my money and I can’t have it? Apparently you can only withdraw from your credit but my cash advance limit (how much I can withdraw) is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than my savings amount. So basically I put in 1.6k into this mf and can’t even pull half of that through my credit 🙃 I’m closing my savings account.

Compared to most companies in the sector, Discover as a company has always been very customer friendly to me. My experience using their rewards program is above average. Discover is pretty much accepted everywhere that accepts a CC, and more than Amex. I have several CC's, so I usually take advantage of the 5% quarterly offers with my Discover card. That's over double what other cards offer (except initially, sometimes). Pretty solid.

I asked for an increase in my line of credit from 10K to 20K. I was offered 3K more. I have no missed/late payments, FICO score of 810, a healthy balance in my Discover Bank account and no debt. The astounding thing is they would not give me a clear explanation of why I was denied and that I would be sent a letter explaining the rejection. Changes coming!

STAY AWAY
STAY AWAY , do you understand these two words? I applied for a credit balance transfer card. I didn’t like the credit line, and I didn’t agree to the terms. The same minute I called and canceled the application. Two weeks later, they went forward with the balance transfer and now asking my money. They investigating like 3 months but nothing; they running around . STAY AWAYYYY

Discover Bank is top notch!
Discover Bank & credit card are wonderful. Their security is top notch. They let me know right away even a small $29 amount posted to my card. When I’m on the road, they call me right away if they think someone else is using my card. Customer service always looks for helpful options for me. And the bank texts my balance everyday so no glitches like BofA occur. I’ve had Discover for years. Five stars all the way!

DIscover sides with merchants
They allow you file a dispute within a year of purchase. You provide documents and the merchant ignores Discover and provides nothing. Discover takes the merchants side even though they provided nothing. Use a different Cred Card.

Don't get a Discover Card, please, if you value your time and sanity
I am appalled at the treatment my daughter and I received, over the last three months, before I closed/cancelled my Discover card on January 2nd. I am 92 years old and have had my Discover card for many, many years. My daughter, through a conference call, helped me file a dispute, on October 1, 2022, regarding almost 20 charities that had fraudulently charged my Discover card, over the last year. I thought that Discover was doing a thorough investigation and at first, felt really good how they were handling it, but the problem was, since October 1, Discover could not stop the charities from charging my card, so I had to keep getting new cards (four, overall) which all involved numerous calls, with us waiting over and over, again for the right department. . .Discover can check my account and the 15 people we talked to, over those three months of their so-called investigation, between October and December, but still they could not stop the fraudulent charges! However, Discover did DENY my auto insurance recurring charges and they denied my auto registration! So they didn't stop the fraud, but they stopped my legitimate charges. And further, I NEVER HEARD BACK about my disputes, even though we called and called, for updates. The charges were just slammed back onto my Discover card. Specifically, we had called in December and spoke with Colleen and Ally and still, they said there was no news about the "investigation." Well, our last call was on January 2nd, after they had put all the charges back onto my account (which they back dated to November 12th, apparently) and we first spoke with Carolyn (customer service), who kindly cancelled my Discover card, but then we were transferred to Tyra (fraud), who STILL could not give us any information on my disputes. She supposedly was talking to a manager that was looking at my account, who she said would come on the line, and my daughter and I waited 35 MINUTES for that doggone manager, who never came on the line!!!!! We had been on our conference call with Discover for 2 HOURS, so we finally hung up, disgusted with the way Discover has handled this whole situation. My daughter and I will bad mouth Discover, to whoever will listen. I know most people don't care, but shame on Discover and watch out!!!

Ruthless, Robotic, and Cruel
I got into a position, due to being a caretaker for a relative, where I couldn't make the stated payment. I PROACTIVELY tried to get a lower payment, but they refused to deal with me at all. Now things are with a collection agency and I'll end up with a judgment on my credit. What a bunch of jerks. When you call them, they are like robots. No, you have to do it this way. No, we won't negotiate. Stay away from these ruthless, greedy people.

Discover doesn't understand how POA's work
My father passed away and my mom has dementia. I have POA (which clearly states I can conduct business on her behalf whether she is incapacitated or not). After emailing and faxing the documents (more than once) I am told NOW they need proof that she is incapacitated. This has been going on since 11/16/22 and each time I talk to someone I get inconsistent information. Each time they receive something via email or fax, they need 5-7 days to review it...and I didn't find out they needed something additional until after waiting each time. In the meantime, the account may be delinquent and be charged additional fees - but I don't know! Prepare for a circus if you need to deal with Discover Card.

Discover Financial Bad Service
Discover Financial, This company does not care about its customers. Just like other student loan companies, they know how to properly align with the majority of their customers and offer them feasible options during a time of high-interest rates and inflation. While federal loans are being given relief and put student loans on hold, private loan companies are trying to nickel and dime their customers for everything. When you offer options that only put the customer more behind on student loans and call it assistance when in reality it just makes the customer pay less for a certain amount of time but increases the payment for them as soon as they start back paying student loan payment that does not solve the problem. Private Student Loan companies constantly try to put a bandaid on the problem instead of offering options to better their customer's situation. It is time you realize that the aggressive and unethical approach you are taking will no longer work. The majority of your consumer audience that is paying for student loans is not getting by because of the economy crisis Americans are going through and the salaries of most middle class workers that are stuck in student loan debt are not seeing increases in their salary to compensate for the amount of money you are forcing everyone to pay. This is why I am looking to refinance my student loans with a company that will actually provide a solution to the problem. I would strongly not recommend this company to anybody who wishes to be treated fairly.

Unable to answer very basic question... canned comments, pathetic.
I have asked agent nearly 10 times now. If I pay my charges off by Dec 10th, will I be charged the 16% APR? At this point, I am assuming no, because every single time these fools could not answer a simple question. In fact, every single time I got a different answer. Every. Dang. Time!!!!!! Unreal. I am transferring companies. Already initiated the rollover.. learn to answer simple questions. Pathetic.

After several months of process and submitting a bunch of documents, the loan was denied for the reason "We won't lend to the multiple families house", wasn't the "multiple families house" obvious from the beginning of the application? and you wasted months of time and effort to get all those required documents and gave out personal confidential information.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
Received an alert that card was being used in August 2022, called Discover to report it wasn't me. The suspended the card immediately and stated that they'd send a new one, after 2-3 weeks later called to report that I didn't receive it and was told it was due to a paymennt being due that they could not send a card, made a payment and was told it would be sent out, couple weeks later called again to state, card had not been received to be that they could not send me a card unless, I called from the number from an extensive fraud alert, that was placed on my Transunion account, called Transunion, not sure how the fraud alert got there, sent them proof of address, copy of ID and a cover letter, called Transunion to verify receipt, the removed extended fraud alert, called Discover back and was told it wasn't removed, waited a week called back and refused to let customer service rep off the phone, after he told me the same, called Transunion on home phone, verfied the information on speaker while rep on mobile phone on speaker. He calmed his attitude and stated he'd heard and will do a soft transfer so that he can explain to a manger that he heard my conversation with Transunion and that he applauds me on how calm I am after reading the notes on how many times, I've called. Once transfered, I got a Manager on the phone, who stated to me that he told her that I needed a replacement card and they weren't able to send it cause, I had a fraud alert. She was just as unconcerned as all the other managers that I'd spoken to over the last 2 months. I have spent numerous hours on the phone, being transfered to unhelpful managers, having to explain my issue and many departments and inconsistency in the reasons for this issue, never a solution all though, I've done what was expected of me and 3 months later, no results insight.

0/10 don’t waste your time
Prior to leaving for basic training, my husband contacted Discover to open a checking account. This would be the account his funds would go into for the 3 months while he was away. The funds that would pay all of his bills as well as half of our joint bills. He intended to make the account a joint account, but was told they were unable to do so, but could not disclose why. I was informed later on that the reason was because I already have an active checking account and can’t have 2. Had this been mentioned, I could have closed my account as it hardly gets used. It was then suggested he make me an authorized user. The only difference between the two is I would not have a debit card, which was fine for us because I’d have his account access where I could transfer funds from his account to mine via the app. Discover completely disregarded his request. Never gave me access. Never mentioned to him that even I I did have access, it would be very limited and temporary. Never mentioned power of attorney paperwork he’d have to sign so I could be given access. I’ve spent several hours contacting them numerous times and kept hearing how sorry they were for the “inconvenience”. Numerous times I was told to have my husband contact them. My husband has no outside contact for 3 months while in basic. My husband now has funds transferring to this account for his/our bills that I have no access to. Bills that could potentially make us homeless, without vehicles or means of necessities. We have two young children together. Because their employee didn’t do their job as it was requested when the account was opened, they’ve put my family’s livelihood at jeopardy and all they’re sorry for is the “inconvenience”. 0/10 would not recommend wasting your time.

Banking with Discover
I've had a Cashback Debit and Online Savings accounts with Discover for a couple of years now. I've had no problems, and I left my previous bank because of problems. Discover has the best 24/7 customer support ever. I had some personal information stolen and they immediately changed my account numbers (closed the account, opened a new one with everything carried over) so the theives couldn't access my money. I get interest on my savings and automatic deposits of my cashback into my savings account every month. They give you free checks. They let you freeze your debit card indefinitely. I keep mine frozen all the time and unfreeze only when I use it. That prevents nearly all possible fraudulent use. I pay my bills through their online bill pay. It has worked great, no problems. It's extremely convenient. I like it a lot better than having checks constantly in the mail. There is still a couple of days lag between doing an online payment and having it posted to your account. You still need to keep records of all your spending to match against the bank's records. That is how you 1. know how much money you really have (the lag causes the bank's total to be temporarily inaccurate), and 2. spot problems. I'm not sure why so many other people are having problems with them. I live in the US if that makes a difference. I don't know how much it matters, but to prove my identity I have my mother's maiden name listed as something pretty obviously not her maiden name, so who knows what I told them other than me? People who know my mother's actual maiden name will give the wrong answer. I also have a security phrase/word. Not sure exactly what they call it. These two measures were put in place after someone stole some private identifying information from me. They always ask for these two bits of informatioin when I call. Also, our cell phones have become crazy important. They can always send a code to your cell phone for identity confirmation. Nobody else has access to the texts on my cell phone. Makes me scared of losing my phone or changing my number. I have learned that you do need to tell them when you travel out of state. They will refuse charges from out of state if you don't tell them. That is a security feature. I called them while checking out at walmart out of state because the payment wouldn't go through and they fixed it in a few minutes, the payment went through. I don't have their credit cards but the credit cards I have, I pay off in full every month and don't have problems with those companies either. Your credit is important, you should treat it like it's important. Protect it from fraud. Only spend what you can pay off every month, paying interest is a waste of your money and the work you did to earn that money. Credit cards do two things for you, if you use them well: 1. protect you from fraud because you can file disputes, and 2. give you benefits like cashback. Cashback is free money, or I sometimes think of it as a discount on what I'm buying. If you want to finance a new boat you should not use a credit card, you should use a savings account. I have had a great experience with Discover bank and highly recommend them to everyone.

They never increase my limit
They never increase my limit. Now, my balance is $0 to $15 each month, just enough action to keep them from closing. I wish I would have went with a different company, as I previously had an issue with them in the late 90's early 2000's falsely listing my payments as late to rack up late fees, even though I was sending them signature confirmation over a week early and had all the evidence from that presented to them.

I have been locked out of my account twice now, and I am again unable to access my funds. I appreciate and expect rigorous security verification. Discover cancels accounts and lowers credit without warning
So I used my Discover card for a few months when I first got it, but paid it off like a good person. I went to go try and use it and they had canceled my card. I eventually did find the email, but they never even sent me a letter and when I called them, the manager said they will NOT even consider re-opening it. WOW All because I hadn't used it in a while. They could have at least sent an email or a letter saying they would cancel it if I didn't use it within X months, but they didn't. I spoke to a friend who said the following: "they cancel accounts that have not been used in over one year. Happened to me. No warning, no appeal, nothing. I also know they downgraded my son’s credit card limit because they thought his utilization rate on OTHER accounts was too high. Again, no warning, his card just gets declined when he thought he had ample available credit." They used to be so nice to me and now this. TERRIBLE experience now.

I applied for a perDo Not Use Discover Bank For Anything sonal debt…
I applied for a personal debt consolidation loan through Discover. I was approved for the amount I had requested. I didn't know until I was filling out the final steps of the application that Discover bank wants a list of your creditors and they will pay the bills you want to consolidate. If there are any funds left, those get deposited into your bank account. My opinion is that if I am responsible enough to maintain a good credit score in order to be approved for the loan, then I can certainly pay the bills I want to consolidate. It made me feel like I couldn't be trusted to use the funds in which they were intended, so I am not going to proceed with the loan process. Don't use their credit cards either. I had one to use for emergencies, and since I didn't use it enough, they closed my account. Lastly I read several bad reviews from other customers who used consolidation loans and say that Discover did not pay their creditors or give them any funds that were left over still charging them interest fees.

Do not get a Discover Card..
Do not get a Discover Card... If you already have one NEVER EVER use it for recurring payments. I signed up for a monthly service with no term obligation. The service was no longer available to me but the merchant kept billing the card. I opened a dispute with Discover who gave me an itial credit but then charged it to my account again saying that since I once authorized the merchant they cannot block the charge or credit me for the charge where I did not receive service. This happened again the following month and Discover agent told me the only way I can stop paying these charges is to close my discover account. I had to do it which will have a negative impact on my credit rating. There is nothing you can't get from some Visa or AMEX cards that you get from Discover... NEVER get this card. And if you have one NEVER EVER use it for a recurring purchase.

DO NOT BANK WITH DISCOVER
I opened a Discover checking account around June 28, and they decided to close it on July 25 for "suspicious activity". I did absolutely nothing wrong, and now they won't return my money for 60 days. I cannot wait 60 days, who can? I called everyday between July 25 - July 29, and no one could help me get the money faster or even an explanation as to what happened. Someone told me I would receive a letter in the mail stating what happened (implying it would come before my money), but then someone told me today that letter would not come until my check came with it. It is not benefiting them at all to hold it that long, meanwhile I'm the one suffering without my money.

Consumers are at risk of loss everytime they use Discover Card
I was subject to an online scam booking a hotel room using my Discover Card. I recognized the fraud immediately in part because as soon as I hit the complete reservation button I received a Discover Card alert that my transaction threshold had been exceeded. This alerted me my card had been charged for more than I expected and including unauthorized charges. So I called Discover and they said they couldn’t do anything until the charges post. They sent me a transaction alert then said they couldn’t do anything about it, very amusing - so what’s the point of the alert. So I called the merchant to cancel the transaction and the customer service number was to an offshore call center who canceled the hotel reservation, but said it was non-refundable because I needed to cancel by yesterday. And I said I couldn’t cancel yesterday because I booked today. Note part of the merchant scam was not disclosing the bogus cancellation policy or the 50% “service charge” until after the “”complete your reservation” button was entered. So Discover didn’t even buy that an egregious charge disclosed after a transaction was “approved” was authorized by the card holder. I disputed the transaction with Discover 3 consecutive times and every single time the merchant sent in documentation that I did cancel on time so they denied the dispute. In meantime I had rebooked the hotel directly with the hotel so I am out quite a bit for this scam. The last conversation with Discover they agreed this was a scam, but said a scam is not fraud as covered in the user agreement. So they will not remove the charge because they said I authorized it. Even though they acknowledge it looks like a scam. I asked for the merchant documentation to review and they two two weeks to send it. They would not provide me with information about the merchant and the phone numbers they had for the merchant (CCI Hotels) we’re not working numbers. The internet is littered with complaints about true merchants business practices yet Discover has decided this is not their problem, it’s mine. In the short term this is my problem, but I. The long run this problem is Discover Cards. There should be consequences for enabling fraudulent merchant behavior and mistreating customers. Please thumbs up if you agree.

Is Discover near bankruptcy?
My first guess would be that Discover is going bankrupt, or struggling to stay solvent. They send a fishy email claiming that they need an IRS form completed, but when you call customer service to ask about this email, they tell you it is a pfishing scam, and that it did NOT come from Discover, and to disregard those emails. But then later they freeze your account, and have stripped all forms of customer support to non-existent levels. I have held 2 discover accounts for years, and have a perfect history with them. No other credit card company has done this to me.

Don't waste your time on an application with Discover!!!
I had a Discover card for about 5 years. They sent me an offer, that if I got someone to sign up, they would give us each $100. I talked my girlfriend into applying for a Discover It card. Knowing her credit score is over 800! She is a half owner of our house, bought a brand new Toyota, etc. Didn't think they'd turn her down! She called in a credit application, and they refused her a card. When I called to inquire they got nasty with me. When her denial letter came back it showed an 815 score for her, but they claimed not enough income! Needless to say after 5years I cancelled my Discover account with a 0 balance!

I have to talk to the “Security Department.” I’ve been on hold for a combined 12 hours over the last 48 hours trying to talk to someone in the “Security Department”. No one answers. Calls drop after about 3 hours and then I have to start all over. Meanwhile, I can’t access any money to pay bills or buy groceries. They are literally holding my money hostage and I have no idea why because I just sit on hold! I accepted the loan and provided them with what I needed to pay off and direct deposit information. Was told they will pay it off and then transfer the balance to my checking account to pay off other cards. Checking the Status a few hours later it’s saying they couldn’t approve the loan. I called and was told it was a glitch and give it 24-48 hours and call again; I have been calling since with all these incompetent reps telling me something different. They cancelled the old application and did a new one and now I’m being told it’s under review. Review for what? No one can answer and they cannot provide a time frame. So I’m guessing a review can take one year? 5 years? I’m confused. Discover loans is ridiculous and I would not advise on it. I needed the loan to consolidate my CC’s and they are making it so difficult. If anyone from discover is seeing this please do better!

They have the worst customer service in…
They have the worst customer service in the world. If you want to talk with a banker, you have to wait 3 or 4 days on holding to recieve an answer. It's not a bank, it's a joke. Don't trust them. They ban your access to your debit card account for no reason and they don't answer. You can't access your money. It's like a scam.

Locked out of checking account since…
Locked out of checking account since Monday! Multi-hour hold times to get a person that says security has to unlock and then hangs up or they just hang up when they get the call originally! At this point I have thousands of dollars being STOLEN by Discover Financial services! STAY AWAY FROM THESE Crooks!

Very disappointed
Very disappointed that Discover decided to lower my credit limit from $4800 to $500. Then, after I complained, they asked the IRS for my tax returns to prove my income, which I authorized and which they agreed my self-reported income matched my actual income on the tax returns and yet they still refuse to put my limit back up.

7 days of multiple 3+ hour calls still no solution.
I bought food then I was locked out of my account for unusual activity on Monday at 7pm I’ve been calling multiple times a day everyday waiting for 3+ hours most times only to be disconnected or told that they are incapable of doing their job due to a technical issue it’s currently Sunday and I still do not have access to my account.

They unlinked my external account with…
They unlinked my external account with no prior advice and it's literally impossible to reach someone to address the issue (nor by phone - over 90 minutes waiting time, nor by chat - no one answering, nor by Secured Message Center - they replied to call by phone). As previous reviewers wrote, I had the same awful, outrageous, ridiculous experience. I need to transfer money between the 2 accounts ASAP but no one is helping and it has been days since that. Stay away from this Bank, it's not a Bank, it's a joke.

Awful service
I deposited money into my saving account, and Discover bank froze my account for about a month without a reason. I couldn't have access into my money. When I called customer service, I was told I had to wait for about half an hour. But, I waited more than 2 hours for someone to answer. After more than 2 hours the representative didn't help me and told me I had to call back two days later. Again, I had to wait more than two hours on phone. Please stay away from Discover bank. The customer service is awful. I have never had such experience with other banks.

Horrible customer service
As another reviewer naiomi wrote, I also have a frozen account due to "suspicious activity" after owning the account for about a month. Yesterday I was on hold for 3 hours until the phone hung up. I called again and their fraud office closed. As I am writing this I have been on hold for two hours. I cant see or use my money. This is a ONLINE ONLY BANK they should have 5x the amount of reps than a regular bank uses. I am on hold to speak to a REP and then she will transfer me to the fraud office and who knows how long I will be on hold with them. Regretting my decision banking here.

This is literally by far THE MOST…
This is literally by far THE MOST DISGUSTING, UNPROFESSIONAL BANKING service I have EVER had. I hadn’t even had my account for a month. Not a full thirty days and they randomly shut my account down and suspended it because of “unusual account activity” THERE WASNT ANY! I tried to log in, they wouldn’t let me. I couldn’t chat with anyone because they needed to verify it was me by logging in but I couldn’t log in!!!! I also had to call in customer service but there was a 90 minute wait just to speak to someone. All in all, they froze my accounts with all of my money and basically no proof of anything, and can’t get into contact with anyone. DO NOT BANK HERE!!!!!

the Feds hurting them & they making customers suffer
Faithful cardholder for a few yrs Cashback match is a great perk to join but once this card is put into rotation it’s just ok. Credit monitor & fraudulent alerts come kind of standard nowadays, my beef is with the credit increases especially w/ this current economy situation. You can follow bankrate 3 rules to getting a good chance @ getting the increase & I still got nothing, please adjust that algorithm to lookout at least for good standing current customers. The live loan reps usually give out some valuable tips about their company, credit questions & other alternative solutions. due to interest rate raising rapidly your interest rates on your card are changing w/ out u knowing & credit increases aren’t a priority anymore Some companies like credit 1 are charging to up your limit, this company falling off they almost down there w/ them.

Discover has a 100% US based customer service.
Discover has the best customer service!!! In recent years many companies began outsourcing their calling centers offshore such as the philippines. It is usually a waste of time talking to them being that they don't know english and are not very knowledgeable. ON THE OTHER HAND, DISCOVER HAS A US BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE ONLY!! There is almost no wait time to connect with a intelligent knowledgeable agent. Thank you discover for putting your customers first, unlike the other companies which save money by hiring foreigners at the expense of their clients. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

They issue you the card with out getting identity verification and when you send all the documents from your bank, they give you the runaround about resending the documents not worth the aggravation. The worse credit card company I’ve ever dealt with.

THE DISCOVER LEVEL UP 🤘💪🏿
I’ve held a Discover card account with usage of their mobile app for over 2 years now. DISCOVER has added an ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION feature where they scan the web and opt u out all those intrusive sites that share your personal info! This is a really exclusive amenity for being a Discover member. I get compelled to share this because I am big on privacy and credit, and I’ve never seen this service! GREAT LEVEL UP!

Discover does not protect clients against unknown charges!
Discover declined to refund me an unknown charge as their company states. While purchasing 2 websites on Wix.com, an unknown charge was found. After reporting the unknown charge to Wix, they denied our request for refund as it was a few days outside their 14-day return policy. As a customer, we assumed Wix would be understanding and refund the unused website plan (that was never used). Apparently, they'd rather spend $115 paying their employees to fight with me over the money instead of just simply refunding us. After reviewing the case, Discover failed to protect us from an unknown charge as they claim to do. I provided them with the invoice that was found to be charged to our account as evidence. Apparently, Discover does not stand behind their clients as they claim...

I opened the account
I opened the account, got the card, activated it and the first transaction mere minutes later is declined for 'security'. Waste of time and customer service was useless. Closed the account per my request without any security verifications. So I can't use the card without confirming who I am but I can close the account without confirming who I am???? And five (5) representatives can't explain to me how that's possible? 'Excellent customer service'? 'Security is very important'? I don't think so.

Unauthorized control over my money
Despite having an 800+ FICA credit score, Discover would only give me a $2,000 credit limit. I had a $2,700 purchase to make, so I transfered money from a Discover deposit account to pre-pay my credit card account. I had a $3,600 credit balance, but Discover declined my $2,700 purchase. I called and spoke to a representative and a supervisor, and they told me I could not use my own money because the purchase was more than my credit limit. They exerted unauthorized control over my $3,600 credit balance which in my state is a crime. I closed my card account and I am withdrawing all my money from our 3 deposit accounts.

Disappointed Discover
I tried to file a dispute with Discover. For over 3 months I tried working with them on this matter. The agents were inconsistent, careless, and honestly a nightmare to deal with. They couldn't give me any solid evidence to support why they validated the purchase and refused to send me documents on my file that I am entitled to. Basically, if you want a bank you can trust who will follow through with what they say they will do, don't bank with Discover.

Discover Bank lost my money
I made a wire transfer from my Discover Bank account to Turkey on March 1st. I supposed to receive the money by March 16th, but still, I don’t have it. Discover bank wire transfer specialists are not helpful at all. They lost my money, and I don’t know what to do.

Good so far
I have only banked with discover for about 5 months but it has been a good experience so far. Their mobile app is convenient and customer service replies to messages within 24 hours. They also gave me useful information when I made an inquiry on behalf of a relative who wanted to open an account from another country. And the interest rate for my savings account is about 10x what I get from my local credit union. The one thing that seems off is the debit card that is supposed to give you 1% cash back. The first day I used the card I spent about $100 but only got $0.63 cash back which is a lot less than 1%.

Discover owes balance due
Discover owes my deceased spouse a balance of $97. They refuse to make the check out in my name, and my bank won't take accept the check in someone else's name. I sent the check back to Discover but never heard back from them. I finally called them. Discover requires specific paperwork to even LOOK INTO options to resolve this, and the time / effort far exceeds what it's worth. In addition, they never contacted me to say what they needed, it was only after I contacted them. They successfully cheated me out of the money they legally owe.

Great debit card and customer support
Been banking with them for close 2 two years - and I gotta say initially there were issues with trying to log in and for a few months I relied on my other online banks. Well I learned my lesson, those other online banks ended up allowing fraud charges and ignoring disputes to the turn of $3k I will probably never get back despite filing with BBB and CFPB. Discover debit card you get money back and that in itself should be a reason to sigh up. But the few times I needed to file a dispute it was as easy as sending a quick message through the app and within 24hours of less a provisional credit was applied and investigation finalized before the predicted deadline. And you can actually talk to someone in the US without waiting on hold forever.

My application for online banking was…
My application for online banking was rejected for opaque reasons. At the least, they can be transparent. I cannot provide additional stars because I was unable to experience additional services. Capital One approved me immediately, and can send a debit card to me internationally, whereas Discover did not have the option.

Excellent credit, yet cancelled for no reason. Why?
Cancelled my [somewhat] high limit credit card for no reason (maybe not using it enough?). Not a big deal- just opened another CC company - approved for double the limit. So maybe it was meant to be? Thanks Discover! More importantly, the surprise that my Discover Card credit limit was suddenly reduced to $500.00 ?? Without notice. Odd. I’ve never experienced this before. And Discover gave no explanation. Btw: Excellent payment history across the board; excellent credit score; excellent income /employment history. Used it for one balance transfer; paid it off in full after the term. Discover profited with a 3% fee. Not sure if that's considered feasible to keep me on as a customer(?)… Who knows? Oh well. I have plenty other CCs happy to have my loyalty :) Thanks!
