Advantages Over Regular Bank

As one of the Big Four American banks (alongside Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo), Citigroup is the very definition of a regular bank. However, its online banking platforms offers numerous advantages over traditional banking.

Here are some of the top reasons to choose Citi’s online banking platform:

  • Open a checking, savings or certificate of deposit account online, without having to go to a branch.
  • No monthly maintenance fees for checking, as long as you meet minimum monthly balance requirements (ranges from $500 to $200,000 depending on type of account).
  • Access to other Citigroup products and services, such as mortgages, credit cards, personal loans, and lines of credit.
  • Earn a welcome bonus worth $200 to $1,500 by opening a new checking or savings account and meeting qualifying deposit and balance requirements within a specific timeframe.

Cutting-Edge Banking Services

Citigroup has invested heavily in its online banking platform. As a result, customers can expect to find plenty of great features on their banking platform and app.

Citi’s online banking platform lets you:

  • Pay bills online
  • Send money to friends with Zelle
  • Move money between your Citi and non-Citi accounts
  • Set up balance and payment alerts
  • Add your Citi debit card to mobile wallets (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay)
  • Purchase presale tickets and exclusive experiences for concerts, sports, and dining with Citi Entertainment
  • Access benefits by enrolling in Citi ThankYou Rewards with an eligible checking package

Traditional Banking Services

Given it’s Citigroup we’re talking about, it goes without saying that online banking users get access to all the same banking services as traditional banking customers.

Here are some of Citi’s top banking services:

  • Range of credit cards, including 0% intro APR credit cards, balance transfer credit cards, and rewards credit cards.
  • Wide range of checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and banking IRAs.
  • Mortgages, home equity loans, personal loans, and lines of credit.
  • Investing insights and tools.
  • Citigold, comprising a Citigold relationship manager and Citi personal wealth management financial advisor.
  • Free access to thousands of Citi ATMs around the United States and globally.
  • Small business accounts and credit cards.

Interest Rates and Fees

From 5 types of checking and savings accounts and linked checking-savings accounts to dozens of CD and IRA options, Citi offers many ways to save.  The most-basic checking account offers 0.01% APY, while the Accelerate Savings account – available in select states only and subject to certain terms and conditions – offers a 0.50% APY.

Customer Service

Being a regular bank with an online platform, Citi offers its users several support options. Customers can get in touch by: the live chat option on the Citi website; calling online banking support on 800-374-9700; or by visiting one of the hundreds of physical branches in the United States. Citi also offers a personalized relationship service to users of its premium checking accounts and wealth management services (which require a minimum balance ranging from a few thousand dollars to $200,000).

Mobile Apps

For a large traditional bank, the Citi mobile app is pretty good. Although it lacks certain online banking features, it does provide a convenient way to track and manage your bank accounts from the convenience of a smartphone or tablet. Citi’s mobile app has been certified by independent financial services ratings agency J.D. Power for providing an outstanding mobile credit card experience. It has a 4.6-star rating on the App store.

Here are some of the things you can do with the Citi mobile app:

  • Manage your finances and get personalized spending and saving insights
  • Instant access to your bank and credit card account summary without having to sign in
  • Custom alerts for transactions, purchases, payments, and more
  • Put a lock on a lost debit or credit card
  • Deposit a check by taking a photo from your phone
  • Send, receive, or request money using Zelle
  • Ask Siri to give your checking, savings, or credit balance

Security

As a large bank, Citi has the means to protect its users from fraud and hacking. When you bank online with Citi, all your activity goes through 128-bit SSL encryption, an extended validation SSL certificate, and multi-factor authentication. Every time you sign in to Citi Online, your visit is timestamped so any unauthorized account access can be tracked. If Citi believes your account has been compromised, it blocks your online and mobile access and sends you an instant notification.

Conclusion

With Citi, what you see is what you get: a full-service banking platform and app from one of America’s largest banks. If you’re looking for an online banking platform that lets you access all the services of a major U.S. bank without ever having to go into a branch, then it’s fair to say Citi does the job.

    The Citi ATM misappropriated deposit

The Citi ATM It took $3200 cash without issuing a receipt. I went into the bank to complain just before closing but they were no help. They found the money 2 days later and would not return it for over a month.Their corporate big wig stepped in to assist and made things worse as they did not like my tone and accusation even though it was true. I recently had a new credit card from them that they solicited with a mailing offer. After about 1 1/2 months later they closed the account with no warning. They would not give me a reason for closing the account telephonically and insisted on a written request. Their reason for closing the account referenced that they no longer would do business with me due to my previous complaint for their misapproation of funds. The only reason I opened the credit card is because it allows me free luggage on American Airline and gave a sign up bonus otherwise I would not choose to do business with a bank that I cosider crooked and now appears to discriminate because they are the wrongdoers and I called them on it. In the shorth period that I had the card I visited a branch and attempted to make a cash payment and was informed that they do not accept cash for credit card payments and this was also verified by the brach manager. This is a crooked bank and I am blacklisted as a customer. My wife tried to add me as an authorized user on her Citibank American Airlines credit card and the declined without furnishing a reason. I see that 89% of their reviews are BAD== it is very risky doing business with any kind of business with such poor overall reviews

    What a bunch of clowns!

I paid my Citibank credit card in full and closed the credit card account a year ago. Then I received unsolicited credit cards in the mail last month. So I called to find out why they sent me credit cards on a closed account. The lady told me that the account was not closed and that it had an outstanding balance and late fees. I disputed it and then tried to pay it off to be done with them. Called the fraud department back and it was an act of Congress to get her to pull my account up. She was uncourteous and unprofessional. I asked to talk to a supervisor and she refused to get one for me. I told her I would just pay the $12.66 they said I owed and no late fees. She said fine, then sent me to the billing department, who said the account showed a zero balance and there was nothing to pay. At this point I consider them a bunch of unprofessional clowns and will never do business with them again. Checked with the BBB and found that they have an F rating. No surprise there.

I opened my checking account with a coupon online. I forgot to copy the account number. So I called 1-800-745-1534 at 12:51 PM and spoke to an incompetent ****. Who refused to give me his name and my account number even if I provided my social. I then demanded he transfers back my $93 from my account and closes it. This ****** refused without an explanation; this fool does not know how to de-escalate a situation. Anyone with a brain in their head knows when someone is as upset as I am, YOU IMMEDIATELY GET A SUPERVISOR ON THE CALL, WITHOUT ME ASKING FOR ONE. YOU SURE AS HELL DO NOT HANG UPON THEM. I want my money back, and the account is closed immediately. I am done with Citibank and their idiot customer service reps. Refusing to send back my money without any explanation is considered theft and he should be arrested for theft. Citibank should listen to that call to find out who it was fire him and have him arrested. Because his incompetence and stupidity just cost Citibank business.

Cancelled Fubo TV 1 day after trial period starting , however they charged me for 4 months in spite of canceling it again in 2 months when I first realized that they were charging my credit card. ( The c/c bank CITIBANK was notified, however they kept accepting the charges) I am not even sure how fubo TV got my c/c details as I had not given it to them. Business practices do not appear to be ethical. It appears that these businesses and banks are colluding to fleece the general population

Citibank was an excellent bank years…

Citibank was an excellent bank years ago with a lot of history throughout the American continent. I opened my first account in Argentina and then I moved to the USA and continued with the same bank ... until 3 years ago, that the account advisors, instead of helping you get ahead, would put you in more debt since they would carry a percentage of the credits granted to people !!! The bank is already shedding the personal business and is focusing more on corporations! But if you don't like personal banking that transfers accounts to other banking institutions and doesn't affect people's lives, now I have Banco de America and if they value me as a customer!

My Citi checking account got hacked 3 times this week. This Bank has zero security policy in place to protect your money. Worst service ever. Someone hacked my account 3 times this week $500 each time.. It’s taken Citibank rep two hours to block my account and my account is not even blocked yet. In fact as I’m sitting here we have been on the phone 4 times and no credit refunded back to me and the block is not done yet. I’m at the W72nd Street Citibank in Manhattan.

    A Systemic Failure

A Systemic Failure Just don't park your money here. They fail at almost every level, including when people's money has simply disappeared and there is no way to do anything about. Another tell-all example: I inform the customer service person at some third-tier outsourcing firm who says he can't do anything about a Skype payment being refused. He says I must call the Fraud department. Fraud department does not pick up the phone. The IT security is in shambles, not to mention its IT infrastructure in general. No one knows anything. The good people jump ship as fast as they can.

Actual Review from Checking & Business customer

I hold a checking & business account with Citibank for many years. Time to jump ship to new online banks. There are many online banks now that will handle your money much better. These physical banking locations are staying alive with fees and good gesture gimmicks to keep you. Citibank has gradually plummeted with genuine customer care. Many companies sent a COVID-19 customer concern letter when the pandemic started. Citibank did as well, a veiled COVID-19 email was sent regarding waiving monthly service fees. They didn’t automatically wave it, guess what, you have to call them EVERY month to get it waived. What's the word for people that do things like that? As a small business account holder, they also made it extremely difficult to get a PPP loan during a pandemic. Their physical banks couldn’t help you as they mentioned you have to call for that loan. And when you call, they mentioned only certain people were emailed for the PPP loan. Like many other people, they went to other banking institutions for that loan and NOT their own personal bank.

I have been a member of Chase Freedom for 20 years. They questioned a dispute and thus my loyalty so I decided to grab another card in the form of Citi Double Cash. Two credit card declines later with a $5000 credit limit after previously having a $25K limit I am driving 35 minutes back from the store because I was $25 over my limit. Called customer service and eventually got "Chad" who could not approve $25. In short I would not recommend in the least this card company either.

    Credit card a JOKE!

Got Shell credit card managed by Citi. First phone call I got hung up on. Second person said she could not hear me. Repeated myself several times, eventually shouting. After ten minutes of TOTAL SILENCE on her end I hung up and called again. After being on hold for ten minutes the woman put me on hold TWICE, then said she had to verify my phone number, she would call me right back. THAT WAS A HALF HOUR AGO! ALL I TRIED TO DO WAS ACTIVATE MY ACCOUNT ONLINE. PROBLEM WITH YOUR ACCOUNT, CALL... Actual message I sent Shell. They sent me a credit card and I CAN'T EVEN USE IT! Tried to verify my credit card online but got blocked. Called to find out why. "I'll call you right back." Never heard anything. Tried again. "I'll call you back in a few seconds." Nothing. Finally got a response from Shell by e-mail. "Log in to your account, see reply." Called that number... "We can't do anything until that bank reaches out to you." THIS IS THE NUMBER SHELL GAVE ME TO FIX THE PROBLEM! WHY SEND A CREDIT CARD IF I CAN'T USE THE DAMN THING? Time after time they promise to "call me right back" but NEVER CONTACT ME!

CAUTION: ALLOWING YOUR CITI CARD TO BE PROCESSED BY PAYPAL.

CAUTION: ALLOWING YOUR CITI CARD TO BE PROCESSED BY PAYPAL. I ordered items from Facebook using my Citibank MasterCard. I noticed the payment was processed through Paypal. On September 2nd I disputed the charge due to not receiving the items ordered and Citibank immediately gave me a conditional credit pending the response from the Merchant. The same day Paypal posted a charge back reversal to my account for the same amount. On November 3 I got a letter from Citibank closing the investigation in favor of the Merchant and included the Merchant response documentation. The Merchant documentation was from HSBC Bank in Ireland and had the merchant listed as Paypal. The documentation listed the credit card transactions, a copy of the original order, shipping details and the response: Exact Match. The details of the dispute are not mentioned. It seems credit card payments processed through Paypal circumvent the purchasing safety net provided by using a major credit card. Dec 13, 2020 UPDATE This does not apply to paying with my Paypal account: no refund experience with that method. Since the first email, a second charge I made shortly after the first has become a Citibank card dispute. This time: Non delivery. This is the pattern: 1) Within hours of submitting the dispute and Citibank issuing a conditional credit, Paypal posts a chargeback for the same amount. Citibank reports still contacting the merchant. 2) For the first dispute: Citibank reports receiving documentation from the merchant contradicting the dispute and closes the dispute in favor of the merchant. The merchant documentation lists the merchant as Paypal and does not address the details of the dispute: received item vs. ordered item. 3) Citibank's processing is all done by computer and a phone call to Citibank relating to the above reopens the dispute. 4) So far neither dispute has been refunded.

    Citibank Priority Account a Joke

Former client given their total lack of professionalism and total misrepresentation of their services. As a priority client I expected more however Citi never delivered. Travelling overseas extensively and having informed various customer service representatives that I use a VPN for safety, they would still flag transactions and lock me out of my account. On one occasion they sent a letter asking me to call a specific number and when I called the customer service agent said they could not speak to me. After 17 phone calls, mostly answered by agents in the Philippines who had poor diction and poor product knowledge, I closed the DDA account by having the joint account holder personally go their Clifton, NJ branch. The joint account holder was treated rudely and with indifference by the platform personnel and when they put the joint account holder on the phone with the "fraud department" they said I did not provide the information requested to unlock the account. This would have been laughable had it not been so serious. If they reviewed their call records, you know the ones they say they record for training purposes, they would have easily verified my multiple attempts to speak with them. They also indicated that I was signing in with multiple IP addresses...DUH!!! VPNs without a dedicated IP will issue different IP addresses and you're telling me their fraud department was not aware of that...really? When the joint account holder informed me of their treatment and the fact that Citibank was blaming me for the account lockout I realized that I need to close the DDA but also the moderate 5 figure CD, however it took them from Nov. 10th to Nov 23rd to close the account and the monies were not received until December 4th. Once again, demonstrating their indifference. They are simply indifferent and incompetent. As a retired Banker, I'm shocked they have such poor representatives in their fraud and customer service departments....but then again this is the same institution that mistakenly wired $900 million dollars to the wrong account and has been sanctioned by various regulators.

This is a follow-up to my initial post

This is a follow-up to my initial post. The $2300.00 that was eaten by their ATM has since been returned. Citibank could have done a better job with their investigation as I didn't -- at any point -- feel at ease with how the investigation was going. Update my rating to 2.5 for the representative that didn't treat me as if I'd fabricated a story for gains. I contacted them daily, and the rude agents were smart enough to NOT add the survey at the end of our conversations.

Absolute Nightmare - Go Anywhere But Citibank

Dealing with Citibank is an absolute nightmare. If I try to use my debit card overseas or at home for a retailer or travel company abroad, my card is declined EVERY SINGLE TIME, even if I alert Citibank ahead of time to let them know I'm traveling. Customer service is truly heinous, the agents read from a script while you're stuck abroad trying to use your card to check in to a hotel or to book a flight and then you inevitably lose the booking. Most recently, my card was declined at the cemetery at my dad's funeral, so I am officially done with Citibank forever. I hope they go under during the pandemic.

    Card holder beware

Opened up a savings and credit card with Citi about 6 weeks ago. I have had a card with them for 4 or 5 years (always paid/never late) and wanted a 0% for some home improvements. Took 2 weeks to activate the savings account due to continued glitches in their online platform. The ATM card and PIN they sent me never worked. The CC has a very low credit limit - asked them why and they have no idea. My credit rating is 800+ and I have no debt. I cannot use it for its intended purpose given this. First 5 - 7 times I tried to use the card every transaction was declined from $3 to $750. Chatted with Citi and they told me it was a merchant issue (with muliple merchants?) and not on them. Finally got a few transactions to work but continue to get random declined transactions for no reason. Logged in today and they charged me a $10 (48% fee!) on a Venmo purchase as they categorize it as a cash advance. I have used Venmo since its inception and NEVER been charged a cash advance key by any other bank, including Citi on my other credit card account. Tried to call - long long hold. Chatted and the "agent/bot" was rude and pointed me to T and C. I asked him/her/it where in the fees or T and C PayPal or Venmo are called cash advances as I had read them throughly when I opened the account AND before I contacted them. The response: it is at their discretion on how to classify a charge as well as how much to charge for what they deem is a cash advance to benefit them. Now they cut off all access to my accounts, including $228,000 in savings. There are no local branches so until they decide to allow me to access I cannot pay or close my accounts or access my money to move to another bank. Shady shady bank.

    Skip the ATM

I've been using the same Citibank ATM for the life of my account. A few days ago, I deposit $2300.00 CASH. The ATM counted my cash, showed the correct amount and THEN IT ATE MY CASH AND held my card for several minutes after displaying about seven other errors. It finally gave me a receipt that didn't include any traces of my deposit, and it returned my card two minutes after that. I feel like this might have been a trick as a savings account that went dead about a year ago was suddenly live at the ATM, but dead once I logged in using my phone. I made a call to the number on the receipt (No, I did not reach anyone...it was a pool of effing options, and not dedicated to a specific department). A man pulled my card from the machine and returned it to me. I wanted to go inside and YELL, but I ran the risk of having my car towed (as I live in San Francisco, and I wasn't in a legitimate parking space). I wen't home and initiated a chat. I've been checking on my cash DAILY, and the wait time has grown from being resolved in one to two business days to three to four business days, and now we are at ten business days for a "provisional deposit," and who knows where the investigation is going to lead!?!?! I am so nervous about this as a similar incident happened to me as a child with BOA where they took my cash ($200.00) and claimed they couldn't find it. I am not going to take this incident lying down. I'll update once the outcome is cemented. I will be involving the media AND/or the courts if they try to pretend they don't have my money, and even dream about undercutting me. I want ALL of my money in my account, and neither a penny more nor less. Just give me my $2300.00 as you already KNOW I've deposited. Note to all: People, PLEASE do not trust ATM for deposits. Use your phone to deposit checks and go inside with cash.

Hi my name is Ezra Hangadi and this…

Hi my name is Ezra Hangadi and this message is regarding a wire transfer involving my account number ending in 1807. I am buying a property and am in the last stages of escrow. Payment must be made to escrow company by the 14th of September 2020 which is this Monday as per my purchase agreement that I have signed. I initiated this wire transfer 2 days ago. It has been over 48 hours. The wire is still on hold. I keep calling the wire department at 18774438871 only to be placed on hold for hours at a time with no success in getting me transfered to the fraud specialist who they claim is investigating this matter. It’s been so frustrating being hung up on, made to wait long periods, and lied to. At one point in the last few days they even told me that my wire was successfully processed. This is complete negligence and lack of professionalism. It seems like I will have to get an attorney involved in this matter to get the bank to release my money. This is my last plea to have this resolved in a amicable manner. -Ezra Hangadi

Worst customer service I have ever…

Worst customer service I have ever encountered. Filed dispute with credit card over travel cancelled due to Covid. Denied dispute in favor of merchant with no explanation. Phone agents were rude, hung up on me, had no interest in my claim, were unprofessional and unprepared. Will never do business with this bank again.

CITIBANK, A BANKING NIGHTMARE OF THE WORST TYPE

CITIBANK was nothing less than a nightmare. Truly the worst business experience of my life. I think they have a criminal business model of delaying, blocking, and denying access to your money once they have it. It is terrible beyond description. They asked me why I was closing my account. I said,"Probably for the same reason that you have an "F" with the Better Business Bureau and also have many many class action lawsuits filed against you."

CitiBank & Zelle - Partners in Crime

CitiBank promotes the use of Zelle via its online platform. Zelle is a scammer's delight (read their Trustpilot reviews). I got ripped off for $544, with absolutely no recourse whatsoever. CitiBank is probably getting a piece of the illegal action, why else would they promote the use of Zelle?

    More like sh**tybank

More like sh**tybank. They do you sh**ty. Pre-approved for credit card.....then deny you. Too many inquiries. So what about the inquiries. I pay my bills every month, most of the time before the statement comes out. Never been late ever. So I shopped for an auto that have me 5 inquiries, then got 4 different credit cards that added 4 more inquiry's. Then refinanced my auto loan to lower interest. 1 more inquiry. 10 inquirys. Trying to establish credit but this bank only screwed my credit by lying to offer a pre-approved card just to deny and give a ding on my credit. This bank can't see when they lose a good responsible customer. I'll never apply with sh**tybank ever again. I hope they're investors like them losing good customers. I love using my USAA, CAPITOL ONE, and DISCOVER cards each month. Those are the only banks I respect. I hope Citibank goes bankrupt the way they lie to good consumers like myself

    No customer service anymore

No customer service anymore. Need to settle an issue with my account, which seems can't be done online, but can't get thru to talk with any rep, even after almost an hour on hold. No matter what day the call is made. Even when I request a call back there is no call, just end-up talking with a machine. It is as if they took my money hostage and disappeared.

Poor bank. Decisions were made by parent Citigroup that caused stock to drop some years ago, also bad customer service. I will never go back.

No access to service reps. No access through site, app, chat, email or phone

Just received my first Citi card. I am a coder and have many credit cards. I registered it and created a login. I am unable to access my account online. Website is asking for a code word which I never submitted and no other options for logging in. The app has an error code which won't clear. I called the number on the back, there is no automated selection for this and when I pressed zero, I was taken to a message that said they do not have time. And then hung up on. And there is no email access to service reps. I have zero options to access my account. This card cannot be used now. Citibank: your tech and coding teams are completely inept. Please hire competent people. Allow email questions. Thank you.

    I opened a checking account with a $500…

I opened a checking account with a $500 incentive code at an actual branch. I asked if I qualified, as I'd had an account with them in the past. They said YES. It turns out I didn't! I dumped a bunch of money into that account AND got direct deposit to get an additional $100. I called the branch and the 800 number explaining what happened, each time being on hold for 30 minutes until they got me to the right person. So the agent that opened up my account was a liar or simply incompetent. How can I or anybody else trust a bank and it's workers that could not answer a simple question accurately when I opened the account. I fear that they are incompetent or lie? Why would I want to have my investment accounts here or get a loan or any other account here? I would always wonder if they know what they are doing/if the info they give me is correct OR if they are simply lying to me. After a couple of calls, and this escalating to an investigation, it yielded nothing but a waste of my time and a big waste of citibank's time. I'm disgusted with Citibank. I can only say, "NEVER bank here!" to everyone I know.

Citibank CC Covid no deferment program to help their customers

I have a Citibank CC. I contacted them to set up a deferred program during this Covid19 pandemic. They said they had nothing in place!!! I contacted my other CC, car company, etc so my credit wouldn’t be affected. This is so wrong on so many levels. I’ve lost my income and barely making ends meet. To do this to their customers is unacceptable. I would rather default on paying anything further at this point (which I can’t anyway) Max Rosenberg

    Citibank sucks too!

Citibank sucks too! They turned me into Credit Bureau for being $1.81 off my Best Buy Account. Accidentally had bill sent through email instead of regular mail. Best Buy could have sent a notice out or called me on my alternate phone number. They suck the big one too! Would have given zero stars but had to put one. I figured out the $1:81 was....it was a round up from on the best receipt for a St Jude donation

Cannot contact -wrong phone numbers provided on their websites

I just wasted about an hour trying to contact Citi Bank to ask a general question about interest rates and if I can make early payments on something to reduce interest owed. The contact info on their website is all wrong. No email is provided. I called several numbers listed for general inquiries and either got a discontinued number message, emergency line, or hearing impaired services. I didn't get to speak to anyone after an hour of searching their website and calling various numbers provided. This is unbelievable for such a long established company. If Citi Bank reads this, please let me know if I can reduce monthly credit card interest by paying down my balance earlier in the billing cycle before the mimimum payment is due. I am carrying a balance on this card. I do not not wish to log in to ask this question due to lack of privacy in an account with multiple users. It would be ideal if Citi provides a phone and email for people to ask general questions about your services and terms without requiring an account number just to speak to someone.

    Credit Card Fraud dispute

Three phone calls so far, two with the fraud department and one with the security department. Each call the same questions are asked of me...(did you lose your card, was it on your person, etc...)$11,000+ in fraudulent charges and no resolution so far. All charges were posted in August and September(most travel related, hotels and car rentals) and I’m still waiting to be assigned an investigator. I didn’t think to change my autopay total(100%) and they paid all fraudulent charges. I never dreamt I’d need to hire an attorney in a credit card dispute but it’s looking that way. Citi bank Credit Card customer since 1998.

    Citibank issued an unauthorized check

Citibank issued an unauthorized check, and will not resolve their mistake. I have had to call 4 times and have spoken with 2 supervisors. The issue is still unresolved. There is no way to deal with the people at Citibank. I have just read 7 very bad reviews on citibank posted on a consumer affairs site. I am very sorry I opened an account with them, and will get disentangled from them very soon.
