Suitable For?

Travelers is the first major homeowners insurance company to offer full integration with Amazon Alexa. “Travelers Home Central Skill for Alexa” offers tips on maintaining and protecting your home and helps you manage your policy. For example, you could instruct Alexa to “ask Home Central how to prevent water damage.” Alexa would answer: “When cold weather hits, pipes can freeze and burst. To help protect your home from water damage, take steps such as insulating pipes and keeping your home heated above 55 degrees.” Or you could instruct Alexa to “Ask Travelers what my home policy number is” and Alexa would provide the answer immediately.

What Coverage Includes

Homeowners insurance from Travelers comprises all of the standard aspects of a homeowners policy plus a few additional perks.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Coverage for repair or rebuild of your home or other structures on your property.
  • Personal property coverage for furniture, clothes, electronics, and sporting goods.
  • Loss of use coverage, which pays for additional living expenses if you’re forced to move out of your home temporarily due to a covered incident.
  • Personal liability coverage, to protect you in the event of a lawsuit over bodily injury or property damage.
  • OpenHouse, a free home history report brought to you by Travelers and partner BuildFax on your prospective home. Your report includes information on updates and repairs that have been done on the home.
  • A home insurance kit from Travelers and Amazon. Comprises a free Amazon Echo Dot with Travelers Skills for Alexa, a discounted smart home device kit, and professional installation by Amazon Home Services. (This offer is only available in some states. In California, the offer is limited to a certain quantity of people that get in first).

Optional Add-Ons

Travelers offers a solid range of optional add-ons to home insurance, ensuring each user gets the level of protection they’re willing to pay for.

Here’s what’s on offer:

  • Enhanced coverage for belongings covered under the basic policy.
  • Expanded protection and higher limits for special classes of personal belongings, such as jewelry and other valuables.
  • Personal articles floater, a separate policy for selected items.
  • Coverage for personal belongings based on the replacement cost at the time of loss, with no deduction for depreciation.
  • Additional replacement cost coverage for repair or rebuild of your home.
  • Coverage for water backup and sump pump discharge or overflow.
  • Identity fraud coverage for up to $25,000.
  • Green home coverage so you can repair, replace, or rebuild with greener materials after a covered loss.
  • Umbrella insurance, offering an additional layer of protection beyond the liability limits of your home insurance policy.

Discounts

Travelers offers the following discounts:

  • Bundling discounts for purchasing home and auto together.
  • 5% green home discount for getting your home certified by the Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) organization.
  • Protective device discount for installing one or more of: smoke detectors and fire alarms; interior sprinkler; home security system; smart home device.
  • Home buyer discount kicks in if you purchased in the last 12 months.
  • Loss-free discount applies if you experience no loss within a specified time period.

Application Process

A good way to get started is by applying for a quote online. Throughout the quote request form, Travelers supplies tips to help guide your coverage selections, quick answers to common questions, and tips on how you can reduce the cost of your coverage.

The questions are fairly similar to the ones you’ll find on other home insurance application forms. You’ll need to supply information about yourself, any co-applicants, and your home. The questions about your home can get quite detailed, ranging from basics like square footage and age of home to roof materials to how the home is heated.

One important note: Travelers is available in 42 states plus DC. It doesn’t operate in Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

How Safe is It?

Travelers is just about the safest home insurance provider in the United States, if its history and financial strength are any indication. The Travelers Companies, Inc. has been around since 1853, making it one of the oldest continuous insurance providers in the US. It has an A++ rating from A.M. Best, the highest of 16 possible financial strength ratings. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and ranked 106th on the 2018 Fortune 500 list of largest corporations in the US. It has its headquarters in New York City and offices in every US state plus Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore, China, and Brazil.

Claims & Customer Support

If you need to report an incident, you can do so online or by phone. Travelers offers useful resources to help with your claim, including a claims library, service-provider search tool, and workers compensation resources.

Travelers ranked poorly on the 2018 J.D. Power US Home Insurance Study of customer satisfaction, indicating that customers may not have been all that happy with the speed or effectiveness of its claims service. Travelers received a score of 791 (out of a possible 1,000), placing it 24th out of the 28 insurance companies surveyed and last of the 10 largest homeowners insurance companies.

Summary

There’s a lot to like about Travelers’ home insurance offering. Travelers clearly wants to make its users’ lives easier, hence the partnership with Amazon Alexa. The other standout area for Travelers is its approach to eco-friendly homes, with the 5% discount for meeting green building standards. If you’re looking for a major home insurance provider that moves with the times, it’s well worth considering Travelers.

Great Experience with Travelers
Travelers just provided me with the best experience I've had with an insurance company. I'm over 40, so I have lots of experience with Insurance Companies. The basics. My outdoor electric box was broken open, and my meter was stolen. The real issue is that the door was also stolen. I have a 400 amp outdoor box. That is enough to run two full houses. I did a lot of research and tried to find the part, and it was impossible. I avoided calling the insurance company because I figured that would be a mess. However, when I called, they were happy with all of the prework I had done attempting to research the issue and solve it. I was sent to an adjuster. The adjuster called me within an hour. She approved the expenses needed to make the purchase. The process was easy, simple, and they covered what they needed to get us back to the same condition we had before the crime.

Travelers easily resolved 2 issues
A deer hit my car and Travelers was prompt to review and accept the repair costs (10k), less my deductible. A year later, mice had entered my garage, entered underneath my car and ate the wires. Eventually, my dashboard went blank. The dealer repair shop said the wires are made with a blend of soy (similar to corn used in gasoline blends) which mice like. Again, Travelers covered the costs (2k). PS, I sealed the garage area where mice entered, so problem solved. I've been a customer for 13+ years (PS, under a different name).

I have no problem with Travelers…
I have no problem with Travelers claims, only the rates. I live in a small coastal town in Oregon. I'm 75 years old without any violations in the last 18 years. I have a 2004 auto worth around $5000. I drive under 3000 miles per year. In 2019 a neighbor backed a Uhaul truck into my Jeep that was legally parked at the Curb. My Jeep was totaled. Two days later she backed the same truck into my rental car doing nearly $4000 in damage. Again it was legally parked. She was arrested this time. Uhaul eventually repaid Travelers, but I lost my $500 deductible. Now my monthly Premium is $226.00 per month on a $5000 vehicle that I drive less than 3000 miles per year. I don't want to switch, but the price seem extremely high. I live on Social Security so this really hurts. I do carry full coverage with medical, but still it seems way high. It was great to have the 900 for a…
It was great to have the 900 for a rental for how many ever days, but half the time was spent waiting on their adjusters. I have had 3 accidents and none my fault: rear ended, animal, suspected drunk driver. They had me waiting on the side of the road for over 4 hours for the tow truck, which was coming from a location an 1.5 hours away that they got. Just getting the animal claim started took almost two weeks. I have yet to see my deductible back for the drink driver accident that happened Dec 2020, even though I keep being told they are and should have processed it. Plus, so far everything I've asked for an email notification they say sure no problem and then snail mail it. Yes I'm switching insurance and writing my reviews at different sites as I go.

Do not use Traveler's Insurance
I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction and frustration with the handling of my homeowner's insurance claim by Traveler's Insurance. Despite the clear terms of my policy and the extensive documentation provided regarding the damage incurred due to a burst pipe during the winter, Traveler's Insurance has consistently failed to honor their obligations and provide timely resolution. Approximately three months ago, my property sustained significant damage as a result of a burst pipe. Understanding the importance of promptly filing a claim, I reached out to Traveler's Insurance immediately to initiate the process. However, instead of receiving the support and assistance I expected from my insurance provider during this distressing time, I have been met with obstruction, delay tactics, and an outright refusal to address the damages adequately. One of the most concerning issues has been Traveler's Insurance's persistent demand for multiple bids for repair work, despite the fact that I am well within my rights, as per state law, to select the vendor of my choice. This has needlessly prolonged the claims process, causing further inconvenience and distress. Despite providing a comprehensive bid from a reputable contractor, Traveler's Insurance has arbitrarily rejected it, citing reasons that lack transparency and appear to be aimed at minimizing their financial obligation rather than fulfilling their contractual commitments to me, their policyholder. Furthermore, the lack of communication and transparency throughout this ordeal has been deeply disappointing. Despite numerous attempts to seek clarification and resolution, I have been met with evasive responses and bureaucratic runarounds, leaving me feeling abandoned and unsupported by my insurance provider when I needed them the most. Moreover, I am deeply troubled by the frequent changing of adjusters assigned to my claim and the continual shuffling of my complaint from desk to desk within your organization. This constant turnover not only adds to the confusion and frustration but also serves to further delay the resolution of my claim. It has now been 87 days since the claim was reported, and yet there seems to be no end in sight to this ordeal. It is imperative that Traveler's Insurance takes immediate action to rectify this situation and honor the terms of my policy. I demand a fair and expeditious resolution to my claim, including the approval of the proposed repair work by the contractor of my choice. Additionally, I expect clear and timely communication regarding the progress of my claim and any further steps required. Failure to address these concerns in a satisfactory manner will leave me with no choice but to explore all available avenues to seek justice, including lodging complaints with relevant regulatory bodies and seeking legal recourse. I trust that Traveler's Insurance will recognize the seriousness of this matter and take the necessary steps to resolve it promptly. I look forward to your prompt response and a swift resolution to this unfortunate situation.
