Overview

The First Latitude Platinum Mastercard® Secured Credit Card is offered by Synovus Bank, which has its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Synovus provides services ranging from banking to investing and mortgages. The bank manages $45 billion in assets and has nearly 5,000 employees.

The First Latitude Platinum Mastercard® Secured Credit Card is designed for individuals with no credit history, or those with poor credit looking to rebuild. Credit limits range between $100 and $2,000, depending on your deposit, and the company reports all payments to the three major credit bureaus. The card’s fees are fair and it offers 1% cash back on all payments—you can use it anywhere that accepts Mastercard®.

Suitable For?

The First Latitude card could be suitable if you’re looking to establish or repair your credit. It requires no minimum credit score and you can start with only $100, or as much as $2,000. Applying is straightforward and you can do this 100% online—you’ll know in minutes whether you’re approved or not.

While you’ll need a deposit to open your account, the low annual fee makes it a good alternative to similar unsecured cards aimed at helping people build credit. However, if you don’t have difficulty qualifying for cards with better terms, this card might not be right for you.

Interest Rates and Fees

The First Latitude Platinum Mastercard® Secured Credit Card has an APR of 24.49%. It’s important to remember that this APR is variable, and will change with the prime rate.

The annual fee is $25 for the 1st year, and $35 each following year. You’re also responsible for a program fee of $19.95. The card has a 3% foreign transaction fee, as well as a cash advance fee of either $10 or 3%, whichever is larger. The APR for cash advances is 28.99% and is also variable.

There’s also a late payment fee of up to $41, and a fee of up to $30 for returned payments.

Rewards and Cashback

The card provides you with 1% cash back on payments, which you receive as a statement credit to the account. You’re also automatically enrolled in the rewards program and will earn one reward point for every dollar of payment you make to your account.

Once you’ve accumulated 500 points, you’ll be able to redeem the points (in 500-point increments) by heading online or calling the customer service team. Each redemption of 500 points is worth $5. Your reward points will never expire and are good as long as your account is open.

The Application Process

You can apply for the First Latitude Platinum Mastercard® Secured Credit Card online using the secure form. You’ll need to provide some personal information, like your name, address, email, phone number, social security number, employer, and more.

Once you’ve provided the required information and read through the agreements, you can pay the program fee, fund the deposit, and open the account. The entire application shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

In many cases, you’ll get a decision on your approval within a few minutes—you’ll see an acceptance message right on the website. If First Latitude needs more information from you, it will reach out with further instructions.

The company also offers expedited processing for $19.95, where you can get your card processed up to a week faster. However, this service is only available if you use a debit or prepaid card to fund your deposit.

Help and Support

First Latitude provides a toll-free number for customers to call for assistance, making it quick and easy to get the support you need. If you just want to check your application status, it’s possible to do this online.

The website also includes a helpful and comprehensive FAQs section that covers information on how to apply, deposit arrangements, how to order your personal credit report, and more.

Security

First Latitude takes privacy and security seriously. It has both a privacy policy and a digital privacy policy covering what information the company collects, what it does with it, why it needs it, and why it shares some of it. The digital privacy policy states that First Latitude uses physical, administrative, and technical measures to protect the information it collects.

Synovus holds your security deposit in an account protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), so you can be confident that your money is safe. There’s also the option to use two-factor authentication on Synovus to add an extra layer of security. And with Mastercard’s Zero Liability Protection, you won’t be on the hook if your card is used fraudulently.

FAQs

What is the APR for the card?

The APR for the card is 24.49% on purchases and 28.99% on cash advances. The APR is variable for both and will shift with the prime rate.

How will I know if I’m approved?

In most cases, you’ll know the outcome of your application within a few minutes—you’ll see an acceptance message on the site if you’re approved. In some cases you’ll need to provide more information, but First Latitude will give you directions on how to proceed.

Will I receive my deposit back?

Yes, the deposit is 100% refundable and will be returned once you close your account, as long as you’re in good standing.

Conclusion

The First Latitude Platinum Mastercard® Secured Credit Card is designed for individuals with no credit history or those looking to rebuild their credit. You won’t need to meet a minimum credit score, and all payments are reported to the three major credit bureaus. The card comes with 1% cash back on all payments and can have a credit limit of anywhere from $100 up to $2,000.

These folks can't seem to make up their minds.
These folks can't seem to make up their minds. I was looking at CD rates and Bankrate has pros and cons. Pro - X bank has great rates. Con - There are many other banks with better rates. I've also noticed the pros and cons for each bank seem cookie cutter. For me the only thing it is good for is the rates. I don't give their reviews much weight.

Scam emails coming from bankrate owned by Red Ventures
Keep getting unwanted emails from this scam company. On the very bottom, it says, "You are receiving this email because you have an account with bankrate.com." This is bogus! I don't have any account with them. I have written Red Ventures, the parent company that owns them. No response after one month. Today, I got another scam email from them. This company is not on the up-and-up. Now have to get an attorney involved since they won't remove me from their email list. Also reporting this to the FTC as I have requested more than twice to be removed from their email list.

If you want scams and spams!
Bankrate said they would send me three offers from the companies most likely to service what I wanted, which was a HELOC. Instead I'm being spammed with email and even snail mail from scammers (the HARP scam and/or refinance with a bazillion dollar cashout if you send them a few hundred dollars). They also gave my information to a bunch of places for refinancing. In fact, I don't think they send a single place that actually did HELOC's. They are obviously selling your information to anyone will pay ten cents, including known scammers and spammers. Don't give them your information, there are far better ways to accomplish finding what you're looking for!

POOR information
You would think that a website that is based on providing investment information would have the latest and most accurate information, however, that is not the case with Bankrate. Their rates for CD's and Money Market account is OLD and INACCURATE as far as being the highest paying rates available. Apparently, no one is updating this site and my guess is that the companies they list are PAYING to be placed on their site to attract customers. There are much better rates available for both MM & CD's so shop elsewhere if you are looking.

Bankrate: Not good for insurance
I've used Bankrate a fair bit. Likes: mortgage & loan calculators, mortgage interest rate search tool, credit card search tool. Dislikes: Dont use for insurance quotes! The home insurance tool on bankrate is basically a scam. They ask all of your information (to sell) and once they have it, give you a list of providers not quotes. So then you must go to each provider site and input information to get into separate sales funnels - still no quote until you speak with an agent who tries to upsell other products, etc.

No longer a great resource - Now Sponsor Dominated
I used to recommend all my friends and coworkers to use Bankrate. It was 5 stars plus when I used them in the past. I have used them to find companies for one original mortgage for a second home and two refinances. I have not used them since 2014. Now it is worthless as it appears it is sponsor dominated. I used the site today to look for CD rates today. I only received 5 options when I ran a search for my zip code. I click on "more" and nothing else came up. Also, the evoked set of options that came up had lots of strings and requirements.

Same experience as others, cash back scam
Same experience as others. I closed a loan through a Bankrate recommended mortgage with promised $1,000 cash back from Bankrate. I have not received anything and can get no one to respond. I closed in September and last email response was 11/16 that they were checking with their provider. Seems like a scam.

just advertisers, no useful info
A long time ago they used to give you valid info, now if you are trying to find a rate like best cd rate all you get is their advertisers best rates which are no where near the best rates available. So if you are looking for best rates use something like depositaccounts.com. They are now just one big advertisement.

Absolutely horrible experience. We supposed to get cash back if I used one of their suggested lenders. Closed on home and sent in needed paperwork over 3 months ago. No promised cash back
I applied for a mortgage through one of their advertised lenders. It said I would get $1000 cash back. I went through with it, used the lender, bought the house, and submitted all the requisite forms and nothing...no $1000 cash back. I've reached out 3xs nows. The first time someone replied and said it would come in 1 month. My 2nd and 3rd attempt to reach out have gone unanswered.

clickbait, nothing more
I contacted several of the lenders that, according to Bankrate, offer low rates combined with low origination fees. What I discovered is that lenders do not actually offer the terms that are displayed on bankrate.com. This is unethical. I suspect that Bankrate and the lenders that use them are both fully aware of this. You might be able to get the rate that is shown but paying a higher origination fee than what is shown for that rate, and you might be able to the lower origination fee but with a higher rate than what is shown for that origination fee. But not both, and in my case when I decided to contact TOMO, I learned that the low rate that was advertised was not a rate they actually offered regardless of origination fee. The TOMO representative waltzed around this and tried to make it seem that it was something that Bankrate did that TOMO didn't have any control over. But it was very apparent that he was lying. At the very least the lenders are able to manipulate the rate that appears on Bankrate, possibly by reporting loans that aren't real, and in all likelihood Bankrate knows that this occurs and looks the other way. Since the primary purpose of the site is for comparing rates and since the data isn't reliable and is being manipulated by the lenders, Bankrate serves no useful purpose whatsoever so far as I'm concerned. The only thing it is likely useful for is for filling up your email inbox and your phone messages with spam that you will not be able to stop. It is a great, great mistake to give Bankrate your phone number or your email address. Don't do it. You'll regret it.

I requested a bank rate
I requested a bank rate. I was immediately overwhelmed with lenders calling me. Lisa was the first one. she pushed me to answer questions. I told her I really didn’t have time as I had an appointment. Long story short is that I had an appointment which I ended up missing because she kept me on the phone. I thought it was ridiculous. I told her I needed to do it as quickly as possible and get off the phone. Well I can tell you it wasn’t done as quickly as possible! Missing my appointment was an extreme inconvenience to me!!!

The constant barrage of phone calls…
The constant barrage of phone calls when I explicitly asked for text communication is off-putting. The one quote that I did receive was laughable. The quote increased the length of the loan, increased my interest rate, increased the mortgage payment, and offered no cash out (have $100,000 equity in house). I may have been born at night, but not last night. I think I will stick with my incredibly manageable monthly payment, be done in 20 years, and spend no out of pocket costs up front to close. Are people really falling for this?@?@?

Not enough options for people who really need it
The service was ok, but there should be available options for people with low credit and also for veterans who could use the help getting loans to consolidate debt. People with low credit scores should have decent options as most people with good credit don't really need the help as they are able to pay what they have. Especially with COVID hurting a lot of people's incomes the last 2 years.

Anyone can easily search for reviews on Mr. Cooper and see that they get 1 star ratings because there is no option to give a true negative rating. Overwhelmed with calls and spam
Little did I know that within a minute I would be inundated with email, calls, and texts. Even when I didn't answer, they would call again in minutes. None of the phone numbers that came in were the ones to call back. A Dallas prefix turned in to a North Carolina number. Additionally, I started getting spam from third parties within an hour. Two of them, when I went to unsubscribe, went to a bad page. While their services might be rated highly, prepare for the onslaught as soon a you click on the link. While I appreciate their response below, there's no need to privately respond. Prepare consumers; let them know know they will immediately get bombarded

Bait and switch scheme. Rates shown are not what you get offered. …
The interest rate is the most important reason we're shopping mortgages in the 1st place. The problem is that not one of the banks advertised actually offers the rates they advertise and I have a 813 credit score with zero debt other than my mortgage so it's not because of credit scores. Bankrate.com appears to be just a bait and switch third party creating a legal loophole for the banks to use for false advertising.

I use Bankrate when I want to find the best mortgage rates.
I use Bankrate when I want to find the right company to refinance a mortgage. There are two flaws: 1. even though I enter that the property is a rental, I get rates for owner occupied. 2. Not enough data transfers to prospective companies. I have to re-enter too much data.

Absolutely no response from customer…
Absolutely no response from customer service. Obviously don't care about potential customers, so who would risk becoming a customer? Not me.

Poor presentation
We had an appointment with Branch Banker Crista Cochrac. We were shopping for Home Equity Installment Loan. Very poor presentation, very unknowledge banker, very disappointing experience. We could not get any questions answered, and after 15 minutes of out time we learned that the product we need is currently unavailable.

good stuff!
I do not have a lot of mortgage/refinance/banking experience. This site provided very helpful info. Also I do not think it is biased info. It wording is understandable for the 'average' person. Would like to see more in depth on insurance 'bundling' & other topics

I have been using Bankrate for years now. I particularly enjoy using the calculators. I used the 401K calculator, and the mortgage calculator the most. I was able to plan my retirement based on the calculations.

Rates provided by Bankrate are not what lenders provide
It is a complete waste of time. You provided rates and then when the lenders call they give you a totally different rate that is much higher.

RUN AWAY!!!
Bankrate was the worse idea I have ever had. All I wanted to know is what might be out there. They immediately sent my information to a number of banks and my phone has not stopped ringing. I didn't get anything out of this that is comes close to being worth the frustration. Update: It's been 2 weeks and I still get multiple unsolicited calls per day. They even use their response to this review as a shameless advertisement and include their website information. They say there is a way to do this without being contacted but they don't say how. This should always be an opt in not an opt out anyway. Otherwise you are driving people away when you could be increasing business.
