American Express Business Gold Card Review

American Express Business Gold Card Review: No Fuss With High Earning Potential

Card Rating: 3.5 / 5

Card Details

  • Annual fee: $375
  • Regular APR: 17.74% - 28.49% Variable
  • Recommended credit: Excellent to Good
  • Welcome offer: As high as 200,000 points (spending requirements apply; welcome offers vary)

Rewards Rate

  • 4X points on your top two eligible spending categories each month from 6 eligible categories, on the first $150,000 in combined purchases per calendar year (then 1X)
  • 3X points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com or the Amex Travel App
  • 1X points on all other eligible purchases

The Basics

For a small business that's ready to commit to a mid-tier business card, the American Express Business Gold Card offers strong value. It has strong earning rates, particularly when transferring points to loyalty partners.

Cardmembers receive statement credits for select merchants, useful travel and shopping protections, and business management tools. If your business already spends in its bonus categories and with the merchants covered by its benefits, the Amex Business Gold can be a powerful addition to your wallet.

The Amex Business Gold has a $375 annual fee, meaning prospective cardmembers must be prepared to recoup that value each year. Fortunately, the Business Gold offers several ways to offset this cost. Membership Rewards points are worth approximately 2 cents per point, meaning you can recoup substantial value with high-value award redemptions.

Key Perks

  • Up to $300 per calendar year in statement credits for U.S. purchases of ChatGPT Business subscriptions (subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required)
  • Up to $240 per calendar year in statement credits (up to $20 monthly) for U.S. purchases at FedEx (through Oct. 1), Grubhub and office supply stores (enrollment required)
  • Up to $155 per calendar year in statement credits (up to $12.95 plus applicable taxes monthly) for one Walmart+ membership (Plus-Ups excluded; subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required)
  • Up to $150 per calendar year for U.S. subscription purchases with Squarespace (subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required)
  • Travel and shopping protections
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Business management tools, such as the ability to link your Business Gold account to QuickBooks

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Earn bonus points in your top two spending categories each month
  • Valuable transferable points
  • Statement credits with select merchants

Cons

  • Better options are available for small businesses that have fewer expenses
  • Charges a high annual fee
  • High minimum spending requirement for the welcome offer
  • Benefits may be hard to maximize for some businesses

Benefits Breakdown

If your business is interested in automating, the annual up to $300 statement credit for a U.S. ChatGPT Business subscription is a good way to test out how you can best incorporate it into your day-to-day needs (subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required).

If your business already shops with the merchants covered by the Amex Business Gold's up-to-$20-per-month statement credit (enrollment required), you're well positioned to get meaningful value from this card.

If you have a Walmart+ membership or want to get one, receiving up to $12.95 per month (plus applicable taxes) in statement credits from the Business Gold for one Walmart+ membership can save your business money (Plus-Ups excluded; subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required).

If your business needs or uses a custom website or online storefront, the up to $150 in annual statement credits toward a U.S. Squarespace subscription could help host or maintain your site (subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required).

If your business needs to go out of its way to use the Business Gold's statement credits, think twice before opening it. A $375 annual fee is nothing to ignore, so it's important that you're confident in the value you can get from this card.

While the Business Gold offers some travel benefits, like certain insurance policies and an up to $100 credit for The Hotel Collection stays booked on AmexTravel.com (minimum two-night stay required), this card is better suited as a lifestyle card than a travel card.

How to Earn and Use Your Rewards

The Amex Business Gold earns Membership Rewards points. Cardmembers earn points at the following rates:

  • 4 points per dollar spent on your top two spending categories each billing cycle, from the following categories (on up to $150,000 in combined spending each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar spent):
    • Transit
    • Select U.S. advertising
    • U.S. electronic goods retailers and software and cloud system providers
    • U.S. restaurants (including takeout and delivery)
    • U.S. gas stations
    • U.S. wireless phone service providers
  • 3 points per dollar spent on flights and prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App
  • 1 point per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases

If you don't want to go through the effort of transferring your rewards to partners, you can redeem your points for gift cards, travel through Amex Travel, statement credits and at Amazon.com checkout.

Transferring your points to Amex's travel partners is usually how to get maximum value from them. Some highlights include Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Iberia Club. Air Canada Aeroplan is a great way to book long-haul, lie-flat business-class seats, since there's often good availability across partner airlines.

Membership Rewards points can also be great for booking economy flights with partners. As an example, 36,000 Membership Rewards points transferred to Delta SkyMiles can book two one-way tickets from Cancun International Airport (CUN) to Portland International Airport (PDX), where the cash rate for those two tickets would be $772 total.

Where the Amex Business Gold Could Fall Short

The Amex Business Gold will be hard to get meaningful value from if your business doesn't already spend with brands like FedEx, Grubhub and Walmart.

Given that the Business Gold earns transferable rewards points and has a relatively high annual fee, it would be nice to see at least one statement credit for airline incidentals or hotel bookings, even if it could only be earned for bookings made via Amex Travel.

If you own a very small business or just do a side hustle, there are no-annual-fee cards out there that offer great value with less commitment. It's definitely possible to earn valuable rewards without dedicating your business to an annual fee in the hundreds.

On the flip side, if your business spends hundreds of thousands each year, you may feel limited by the spending cap on the Amex Business Gold's 4-points-per-dollar-spent category. While earning lots of points on some of your spending is always better than earning no rewards at all, there are cards out there that don't have spending caps on common business expenses.

Finally, most of this card's benefits are limited to the U.S. If your business spends a meaningful portion of its budget internationally, another card may be a better fit.

Amex Business Gold vs. Amex Business Platinum

The Amex Business Gold's bigger sibling is the $895-annual-fee Business Platinum Card from American Express.

This card is much more oriented toward travel, offering statement credits for travel, lounge access, hotel elite status and 5 points per dollar spent on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com.

If you're on the hunt for a card that can stretch your business's travel to the fullest extent, the Amex Business Platinum will likely be right up your alley. Otherwise, the Amex Business Gold may be a better fit, especially if you don't want to deal with a wide range of perks to track.

When to Apply

New Amex Business Gold cardmembers can find out their offer and see if they're eligible for as high as 200,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 on purchases in the first three months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

At an approximate valuation of 2 cents per point, this welcome offer is worth up to $4,000.

If you're able to get at least 100,000 points for your targeted offer, it's worth applying. That said, considering that Amex only allows a person one welcome bonus per card in a lifetime, it's worth waiting to see if you're targeted for the maximum 200,000-point offer.

Remember that even if you just do a side hustle, you may still qualify for a business card.

Bottom Line

For the right business, the Amex Business Gold is a great way to earn valuable Membership Rewards points while saving on expenses with certain brands. It's a great gateway into more expensive rewards cards, provided you can offset its $375 annual fee.

Just remember that this card is oriented toward those who spend a lot on everyday expenses like advertising, food and office supplies, versus businesses that travel constantly. As long as that fits your business, the Amex Business Gold is worth serious consideration.

Spending Limit

Your account won't have a preset spending limit. Your limit will vary based on your payment, credit, and usage history. However, you will have a Pay Over Time limit as the card issuer wants to cap the balance you can carry from month to month.

Repayment Options

You can pay off your entire balance each month or choose to Pay Over Time. You will pay interest on Pay Over Time purchases.

Security

American Express® does several things to keep your personal and financial data safe, such as:

  • Monitoring your account for potential fraudulent activity

  • Sending alerts when unusual account activity is detected

  • Making it easy to report fraud online or by phone

  • Using SafeKey for identity verification when you shop online (you may have to tap an app notification, enter a code, or scan your face or fingerprint)

Plus, your account details aren't stored on your device when you add your card to your digital wallet.

User Experience

American Express® publishes detailed information on its website about each card it offers. However, it doesn't disclose eligibility criteria online, and a company representative couldn't provide that information when I called, either.

The online application is a simple one-page form with basic questions about your identity and income. You can also apply for a card by calling 1-888-781-6736.

I called this line and got connected with a friendly representative within a minute. They answered my questions and were ready to help me apply for an account on the spot.

Your personal credit score won't be impacted unless you're approved for and accept the card. However, you may see a change in your business credit score when you apply.

You can manage your account via the American Express® mobile app, which is available for Android and iOS devices. With the app, you can:

  • See your balance and available credit

  • Find payment information and make a payment

  • Track rewards

  • Find special offers

  • Request a replacement card or freeze your account

The app is highly rated by Apple device users (4.9 out of 5 stars) and fairly well-rated by Android device users (3.9 out of 5 stars). Some raters praised the app for being user-friendly. However, other reviewers indicated that a recent update made the app less effective.

Customer Service

Contacting American Express®

You can get help with your account 24/7 in these three ways:

  • By phone – 1-800-492-3344 (line for existing cardholders)

  • Online

  • Via the mobile app

You must be logged into your online account or mobile app to connect with a customer service representative. Since I'm not a cardholder, I couldn't test these contact methods.

However, I spoke with two current cardholders to learn about their experience. Andreas Jones, creator of KindaFrugal.com, said, "I had an issue with one of my employee cards that I set up incorrectly. I contacted customer service, and they were delightful to work with throughout the process. They were very responsive and followed through to make sure the issue was resolved to my satisfaction."

What Cardholders Are Saying

Jones, a cardholder since 2019, loves how the card's rewards structure adapts to your business's expenses, giving you the most points for your top two spending categories each billing cycle. However, "keeping track of which categories are earning 4x points each month can be a bit of a hassle if you're not super organized," said Jones.

Petrowski, a member since 2009, has high praise for the purchase protection benefit. She said, "Years ago, my son dropped water on his MacBook, and it was no longer functional. We had only had it for a short time. I opened a claim and sent the receipt, and they sent me a check to put towards the purchase of a replacement product."

I checked Reddit to get more cardholder input. Some users reported being happy about the addition of the current statement credit benefits. Others expressed irritation due to the annual fee increase (previously $295) and the elimination of shipping costs as a 4x points category.

Company Reputation

American Express® has a blemished online reputation, including:

  • 1.4 out of 5 stars across 4,600 reviews onTrustpilot, with 79% of reviewers giving the company one star

  • No accreditation, an F rating, and 1.1 out of 5 stars via the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

  • A court order to pay $108.7 million in civil penalties for allegedly engaging in deceptive marketing practices (as of January 16, 2025)

Please note:As of this writing, we have contacted the company's public relations department regarding these issues and are awaiting their comments.

Methodology: How We Review Credit Cards

We do extensive research before writing our reviews. Here are some of the factors we consider:

  • Rates and Fees:How much does it cost to have the card? How easy is it to get a return on investment?

  • Features and Benefits:How do you earn rewards? How much can you earn? What perks do you have access to as a cardholder?

  • Security:Does the card issuer take data security seriously? How easy is it to monitor your account and report fraud?

  • User Experience:Does the company make getting, using, and managing your card easy? Can you manage your account via a mobile app?

  • Customer Service:Is it easy to get help when you need it? Does the company have a good reputation?

We give the card a one to five rating in each of the above categories, with one being the worst and five being the best. The Editor's Score is the average of the five ratings.

Bottomline: Is the American Express® Business Gold Card good?

The American Express® Business Gold Card may be a good addition to your wallet if you get enough benefits to offset the annual fee. It could also be the right fit if you want to get a high reward rate across multiple spending categories. However, you may want to consider other options if you don't want to track your spending or plan to use your card for only one or two distinct purposes.
