SoFi vs. Capital One: Which Bank Is Best for You?
Add BestMoney as preferred source

SoFi and Capital One both offer fee-free checking and savings with no minimum balances, but they come from very different starting points. SoFi is an online-only bank built around bundling loans, investing, and banking together. Capital One is a much larger, traditional bank with physical branches and Capital One Cafés located around the country. The right option for you depends on your banking needs, preferences, and location.

About SoFi

SoFi became a nationally chartered bank in 2022 and has since expanded into a full-service financial company offering banking, investing, insurance, and lending products, all accessible through a single account and app.

SoFi combines checking and savings into a single account, rather than offering them separately, which simplifies money management for customers who don't want to juggle transfers between two products.

SoFi's standout feature is the rate boost it offers to customers who set up qualifying direct deposits, make $5,000+ in qualifying deposits every 31 days, or subscribe to SoFi Plus, which can push the savings rate well above the account's base rate, plus early access to direct deposits. For a customer already planning to consolidate their paycheck and other financial products somewhere, that combination makes SoFi a genuinely compelling one-stop option.

About Capital One

Capital One has grown into one of the largest banks in the U.S., with a hybrid model that combines online banking with physical Capital One branches and its distinctive Capital One Cafés: part coffee shop, part banking center. It also completed its acquisition of Discover Financial Services in 2025, adding Discover's card network to its already substantial credit card business.

Capital One's standout feature is arguably that hybrid accessibility itself. Unlike SoFi, it offers the option of walking into a branch or café for in-person help, which you might prefer.

Capital One also offers access to CreditWise, a free credit-monitoring tool available to anyone regardless of whether they bank with Capital One. For a customer who wants fee-free online banking but isn't ready to give up the option of in-person service entirely, Capital One could be a good choice.

Checking and Savings Accounts

Capital One and SoFi both offer checking and savings accounts with no monthly fees and no minimum deposit. SoFi counters with the ability to boost its savings rate through qualifying direct deposits, $5,000+ in qualifying deposits every 31 days, or a paid SoFi Plus subscription, plus tighter integration with its lending and investing products.

Capital One offers certificates of deposit (CDs), which SoFi doesn't. That’s a real point in Capital One's favor for anyone who wants to lock in a higher rate on a portion of savings rather than leaving everything in a flexible, yet lower-interest account.

For a customer focused purely on maximizing savings growth with no other products involved, the better fit depends on whether you can consistently meet SoFi's qualifying-activity requirements or would rather have the certainty of a Capital One CD.

Bestie Take: A CD locks a set amount of money at a fixed rate for a fixed term. My rule is to use CDs for a specific goal with a known date, like a car purchase 18 months out, and never for an emergency fund. If you can't predict when you'll need the cash, a high-yield savings account gets you into a similar interest rate range while keeping your money more liquid.

Digital Banking Experience

Capital One's app has higher scores across both app stores in our review, benefiting from years of investment in its mobile platform and the inclusion of CreditWise, which tracks your credit score and reports for free (even if you’re not a customer).

SoFi's app has to accommodate a broader set of products, including loans, investing, and credit cards, which can make it feel busier than Capital One's more focused banking experience for someone who only wants checking and savings.

From My Experience: I use CreditWise to keep an eye on my credit between applications. It shows your TransUnion VantageScore 3.0, updated weekly. That's not a FICO Score, so it may differ from the score a lender sees when you apply for credit, but it's useful for spotting changes and trends. I also use the credit simulator before opening a new card to get a rough idea of how much my score might dip.

Customer Service and Support

SoFi offers phone support Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT and Friday through Sunday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, plus in-app chat and a 24/7 virtual assistant. Capital One offers phone support daily, plus in-app chat. You also have the option of visiting a branch or Capital One Café in person.

For a customer who values the option of face-to-face help, whether it’s to resolve a dispute or simply feel more confident opening an account, Capital One's branch and café network is an advantage here. But if that’s not a priority, SoFi offers similar phone and chat support options.

Personal Opinion: Most people who say they want the option of a bank branch rarely end up using it once they get comfortable banking from their phone. Unless you already know you’re someone who walks into a bank a few times a year for something an app can’t handle, I wouldn’t let in-person access be the deciding factor.
