Application Process

    GAP Insurance Refund Issues

    Paid off my loan early. Tried to get a pro-rated refund on the GAP insurance they sold me for $775. It's been almost 5 weeks now, multiple emails and phone calls. They told me they only have 2 people working in that department and they will call me back. They finally called me. 6 to 8 weeks to get the refund now after filling out the cancellation form.

    CA Truck Owners Beware! Do Not Try and Refinance with rateGenius

    I would highly discourage anyone from doing business with rateGenius. They have a good rating on NerdWallet which i'm sure drives a lot of online traffic for them, but their customer service representatives lack knowledge of the auto loan refinancing process. rateGenius outsources auto loan inquiries to lenders who will refinance your loan, basically they just charge you a fee to do a minor amount of searching for a bank that will refinance for you. My experience was terrible because the customer service rep I worked with did not inform me that rateGenius did not have the licensing capabilities to refinance "Commercial" vehicles. In short form, if you have a truck that is over 1500 lbs (most trucks these days) they will be registered as commercial. The customer service rep did not do her homework or let me know of this, ran a hard credit check, then to tell me a week later I was accepted. From there, I didn't hear back from her for a week and she finally got a call saying that I could not be helped because my truck was commercial. Hard credit check, failed promises, rateGenius is a joke. They will direct you to use Axos bank. Just skip rateGenius and apply directly to that bank.

    GUESS THEY THOUGHT I'M STUPID

    I was approved for a refinance auto loan through Rategenius and dealt with Robert Castaneda. They emailed me the contracts to sign, but I decided gap was not needed and my 10 day payoff was a couple hundred higher than actual so it had to be rewritten. The 2nd Contract now included a "prepaid finance charge" of $150 that was not on the other one and the payoff was still about $100 high. When I questioned him, he said he'd see about having it taken off my contract well a few days later when I contacted him to tell him I did not get any new new contracts to sign he told me he couldn't help me and he was sorry.... he was withdrawing my application. I am pissed. I emailed the company and I haven't heard anything back... so i feel as though since he wasn't getting that extra money from me, screw helping me...I don't trust them now.. greedy

    Will not recommend and

    First attempt at getting a loan looked good. Solid rate and payment. However it expired because they would not process my loan with a military exempted license (out of my state of residence on active duty orders). They told me to contact my states DMV as it was impossible to do and I could get clarification from the state DMV. I contacted them and before the end of the day I had a reply from the state rep they told me to contact that confirmed I can register and title a vehicle with my active duty ID and my current license under the military clause. They told me to go get a new license anyway. I took a day off work and drove 4 hours to get a new license. I sent them the new picture and was told sorry it expired. I made contact with their manager and explained the situation. She said their company was worried they couldn’t do it and would have to pay off the loan themselves so they didn’t process it. The manger confirmed that if I ran another credit report I would have no issue securing the loan within 10 days. I did that and now have no contact from anyone on their team. I was asked to provide references this time but that they could not process it with my handwriting. I have now taken a 20 point hit on my credit because of their failure to communicate and process the loan. Once I get this completed, I will not be doing business with them or recommending them to anyone considering a loan through their team.

    Lease refi gone wrong

    I contacted Rate Genius in mid December to refinance my lease. I got an approval in about a week. I told them my lease was up in March 19th and couldn’t get anyone to answer me to get the deal done. Ended up costing me $1000 in fees due to them promising to get it done and it went over the date of my lease ending. I ultimately had to trade my vehicle in to get a new one at a dealership even after getting two different managers involved. If you’re trying to refi your lease with them DONT!! Worst experience ever!!

    They pull credit without permission or social security number and screw up your credit score. Unprofessional staff telling me in this country they can run credit without SSN. Edit: Andrew the manager was very professional and intelligent. When you submit the form online you’re giving permission to run your credit even without ssn, buyer beware it will ding your credit regardless of what their website says. Andrew does care about customers and getting best deal.

    Either a SCAM or worst customer service ever!

    Just had a hard credit pull literally last week and they connected me with a loan officer and said I was approved within hours! Now loan officer Anthonei Mitchell, who ran a hard credit pull on me hasn’t answered my call or texts for four days counting today! I call customer service and she says hold on while she connects me to a new loan officer because they assigned me to a loan officer who was currently out of office! (Wth????) they then put me on hold for 30 minutes only to tell me “sorry dog no loan officers are currently available to help you we will give you a callback within 24 business hours” to which I replied what the heck am I supposed to do these applications are time sensitive once approved and they don’t last a week before you have to run another hard credit pull to even see if I qualify again!! To which she responds “sorry man that’s the best I can do” and hangs up on me. What a freaking joke!!!!

I was almost instantly 'approved' but needed to call someone's direct number for 'more information' but that person never, ever answers their phone or responds to messages.     My experience was very good! It is necessary to understand what you are wanting to do and having your necessary information together. My loan broker was Jason Ananias who did an excellent job on the loan, communicated progress and followed through on commitments. It’s a two-way street and requires that people work in unison.     It’s really scam

    It’s really scam. I have very nice credit score over 760 I was in a market for refinancing a car .Have reading reviews and thought it will be good company to try but I was wrong. They sent me offer the same what I have now and they just making more profit for another credit union - make me looks like I’m very stupid. Pulled my credit without sense. Overrated for sure!!!

    Incompetent and Untrustworthy

    These people are like not trained or something, I asked if my spouse could be added on to the loan and they said yes and that they made a note and while waiting for my spouse to put her info in they went through with the process anyways. Then I emailed them asking why they did that, used my claim ID as generated on the site in the subject line, and they replied asking what my claim ID was. Isn’t that how all the emails are received? I just clicked the customer service link and it filled that out for me that way. Incompetent, honestly. Not comfortable with them having my information.

    HORRIBLE

    HORRIBLE! I started my experience with this company mid-March 2020. I started the refinance and it seemed like it was going to go very well. The first few steps went smoothly, and then it was time to sign the contract and get documents notarized. Sent all of that in thinking it was good to go - then was told I need an additional document that I needed to type up MYSELF and get notarized. So I typed something up, got the wording approved and got it notarized and sent. Loan officer received the document she approved and told me the wording was no good. Had to do that piece over again - another notary. More than 60 days passes - I reach out and ask where we are with the process - no answer for 2 days, then an email asking me if I still want to move forward. I'm then told that my credit has to be hit again. When I question this I'm given the excuse of COVID - but I asked why there isn't an extension on time frames due to COVID and why I have to go through the whole process again when the errors and lack of communication were the company's fault. No answer to that. I said ok, let's do this. Starts the process over, my credit gets hit again within 30 minutes of me saying do it - then nothing from my loan officer. I waited a week, radio silence. I called my loan officer and was told that the financing company hasn't run my credit yet. I inform the loan officer that they did because it's on my credit report again. She said she'd call them - she calls me back a day or so later - yes they ran my credit (same company as before) and yes I'm approved - BUT after more than 60 days, she just learned that I'm going to have to take the loan out for more because of this/that. WHAT?! At this point I can't even think straight. I tell her to get things in order and then there was another stipulation about the title. I couldn't take it anymore - I went to a dealership, talked with a salesman - and walked out with a new car. That was a week ago - since then I've been trying to contact loan officer to stop the process. Numerous calls unanswered. I called the main line and told whoever answered the phone that I wanted to cancel and how to get my money back for a service I'm not going to utilize. She laughed at me because I wanted my refund (granted it was a minuscule amount - but it's my money that I'm getting nothing for so I want it back!). Told me someone would call me in 2 hours... that was 2 days ago. I'm approaching 4 months of dealing with this company and every step after the first was painful and drawn out. And radio silence all over the place. Horrible experience - would never use.

    Round 1 Trust -- If you have plenty of time and much effort! I do have to say is the worst experience I've ever had! After reading the reviews on their site and interacting with them, I e-mailed and cancelled my so called loan April 18th with the actions of shredding all of my written and sent information through the internet. I was "jerked around" by Rate Genius that more documentation is required from from Aaron Burlingame who was supposed to be my loan officer. I have interacted with him and others via Rate Genius at least 6 times in the past week asking for more and more information. After sending documents back and forth, I decided to terminate my application, having them lost somewhere and having to resend them -- a valuable lesson learned. There's a hard hit on my credit now for nothing...except a valuable lesson learned! I am monitoring my credit report very carefully at this point. I wouldn't take a chance if you're looking to refinance an auto loan through Rate Genius! Round 2 Well, Rate Genius has been in contact with me regarding my application last Friday and wanting to re-negotiate my application. So, I filled out other papers, sent an immediate pdf to them via web browser -- filled out other papers and sent them UPS overnight. It is now Tuesday and I have not heard anything. Guess I will have to wait and see what occurs! Round 3 Well after considerable back and forth discussion and documents moving around, I finally was approved for an auto refinance loan. The original auto loan was paid for through Rate Genius and the refinanced loan saved me nearly $100 a month.

    Constant run around

    Constant run around. They ask for the same info that you submit multiple times, 4 different people contact me, can never get a call back from anyone that is actually handling the loan and don't deliver on their promises. It took over 2 weeks for them to complete my process because as soon as they run your credit they know that they've got you. They set my refinance amount for more than what was due to my old lender because it took so long to complete the process that I had to make another payment. Their answer "your old loan will refund you everything that is overpaid".

    Not To Be Trusted!

    NOT TO BE TRUSTED. I do have to say is the worst experience I've had! After reading the reviews on their site, I called and cancelled my so called loan. I was told on Monday, April 13, 2020 by Christine, that it would take 24-48 hours for approval and that it would be a hard hit on my credit. I was ok with that. Then that afternoon I got a text from Anthonei Mitchell who was suppose to be my loan officer. I have called him 4 times in the past 4 days and not received a call back. I left a voicemail with my name, number, and apllication ID. No response. I'm on the phone right now with Rate Genius as I type this with Carlos who is trying to get a hold of Mr. Mitchell. He isn't answering Carlos, either. I asked Carlos to please cancel my loan application that I want nothing to do with a company where no one gets back to you within at least one or two business days. After reading how awful it is to get documents sent and received, I don't want to send them docs and have them lost somewhere and have to resend them. Lesson learned. I'm ticked now because there's a hard hit on my credit for nothing...except a valuable lesson! I wouldn't take a chance if you're looking to refinance!

    Bad communication

    I applied online and received an email stating that they could not find lower rates for me. An hr later I received a text: Hi Jennifer, this is Zack @ Rategenius. It looks like i can definately get you an approval for a lower interest rate and payment but I need your approval to pull credit. Is that okay ? I responded to that email asking if they pulled a hard credit and he texted back saying yes and they will pull multiple but it will appear as one within the same timeframe with like purpose. I went back to my email and asked about this text message. The reply i received was general and was actually the exact response I received the first time. I thought this was very unprofessional. I am obviously a confused customer who is being told I’m declined then approved. Zack never texted me back and the email I received was literally a copy and paste of the first response rather than giving insight or apologizing for the text that probably should’ve never been sent to me.

    Everything went fast and smooth. Got me a rate of 3.84%. They e-mailed me a pre-paid UPS label to send my documents back overnight and sent me a e-mail the following day to confirm they got the requested documents. Very professional on the phone and the whole process took place over the course of two days.

    I had a bad experience with RateGenius

    I had a bad experience with RateGenius. I work in a no cell-phone signal zone, and so when I was on lunch break, I saw that RateGenius employee "Geoff" wanted to talk to me about lowering my car loan Rate to 6% apr. He called during My late lunch break at 2 p.m. and I picked up, he said he needed my vin #, and I said I could get it for him in 30 seconds, and he said just call him back when I had it. Less than 30 seconds later, my wife sent me the VIN # and I was calling him back, but I only got his voice mail. I then texted him "I have the VIN # now". Then he responded quickly "Yes just one sec Geoffrey Ste*****, Rategenius - Reply "STOP" to opt out of texting" So I waited for him to call me back, after half an hour of waiting I texted him again, and I called him again with no response. I couldn't go back to work, because my work place won't let me accept cellphone calls. So I waited another hour and I called him again, and texted him, and he still didn't pick up. I ended up waiting from 2-6p.m. waiting for a call, and I wasn't able to get back to work, which upset my boss. Later the next day he Told me that he had been out of the office since 2:45 p.m. then he asked me to call him first thing that morning.... And so I called him right after getting the text from him, but then he texted him saying he couldn't pick up because he was in a meeting and it would be 15 minutes. Once again I had to wait to go to work, so I would be able to make the phone call, after about 30-45 minutes he calls back, gets all my info, and then says he wants to remind me the rate he can offer me is 7.5% apr instead of the 6%. He had never told me previously that he was changing the rates, and only did this after All the hassle and after I gave him my info, and wasted another 3 hours of work time the next day.... After all of this, and having a moment to think about it, I cancelled the case of working with them. I know this is probably just a bad experience with one of their employees, but it was very frustrating, and a very bad experience.....

    I have no complaints!

    I have no complaints!! They have been extremely helpful except my first agent who ended up not staying with rate genius. It was fast, friendly and accurate. I can text or call which is convenient!! I love all the extra benefits I have not yet taken advantage of. I just wish I knew my rate could of been alot lower as I am reading in alot of comments from other people. I would definitely recommend rate genius.

    Update 1star to a 4.

    Update: I change my 1 star to a 4 star. Because a manager got someone else to get in touch with me. Kamron Holt has been taking great care of me and keeping in touch with refinancing my loan! I’m happy now. I wanted to see if I could possibly lower my rate because I improved my credit quite a bit over the past year. My rate currently is 5% but I just wanted to see if there’s any chance I could even get a 4 or a 3% to just get my car payment a little down. I saw the hit on my credit because someone checked but I didn’t receive a call for a few days and then Robert Castaneda finally emailed me to see if I was still interested. We briefly talked on the phone because he called at a bad time. He said to just email my car vin number over and he would call me back the next day. Well it’s been 3 days and I’ve emailed him and called to try to get in touch and he had just ignored me. I was told by a customer service rep I was approved though. I’m really eager to see if I can even get my monthly payment down by 20$ and I would be happy, but I can’t seem to get in touch with my loan officer. I’ve learned that If loan officers can’t get much money out of the deal then they will throw you to the side. I’m really annoyed that he can’t give me the time of day to respond to an email. I did however talk to a very kind customer service rep that I wish I got the name of. He did as much as he could to try to get a loan officer to answer the phone. I stayed on hold for 20 mins and he said he was so sorry but no one would answer the phone. He said he would let management know. He is the only reason I’m giving 1 star. I’m highly disappointed with their service otherwise. I don’t recommend.

    Unethical practices by some employees

    Unethical practices by some employees. I’m sure my experience is an anomaly but they not only told me I had a loan when they missed filing it but they illegally pull my credit report without my permission to try and hide the issue. I asked for fair restitution and did not receive it nor did they pay my loan off in full when I was forced to use them because of the situation. Now I received a notice from my past financial services company that the load wasn’t paid in full. I will now be paying to pay two car payments this month because of their incompetence. I alerted them to the issue but like before, expect limited action. I have the issues documented and acknowledgment from them in writing of wrong doing but still issues remain. I believe they’ve grown and have inadequate experience and are not currently capable of properly managing financial services with consistently high service. I was financially impacted, my credit score dropped and still have to try and resolve my issues with limited confidence in their services and ethics.

    Lots of signatures, but 100% worth the ink. Thanks for the great rate and speedy process. I think it took about one week to find a new lender, negotiate a much better rate, secure the funding, and give the middle finger to my prior ridiculous interest rate (Sorry, Not Sorry "Santa And Der"). Now I am putting much more towards principal and much closer to paying off this loan.

    DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! I made the mistake of giving them my info and so far they have pulled my credit a half dozen times with no end in sight and doing damage to my rating. I have emailed them and asked them to stop but so far no response. Update.... I just called and spoke to a rep that was EXTREMELY rude. He claims he is going to "pass a message" along that I want them to stop checking my credit then proceeded to argue with me about how they were not harming my credit then hung up on me. I know they are because I'm sitting here watching the score go down. Wow, UNPROFESSIONAL and SHOCKING plus they've damaged my credit.

    WASTE OF TIME

    First loan officer did not reach out to me nor respond and their phone number just rang busy. Was assigned to second officer who was not helpful and must have hoped that I cannot do simple math. They offered me a lower payment of $40 but to add on almost 20 months! of what I am currently scheduled. Ummm, at $400 a month this is no bargain and I would be paying approximately $7k-8k more in total. BEWARE!

    Let me preface by saying the actual loan portion of this is wonderful. Dropped my rate from 19.6 to under 5. I think my issue is with my actual loan officer. The complete lack of communication after multiple emails and phone calls is ridiculous! I was following up to see if I needed to make the monthly payment for my existing loan and found out my officer filled out the paperwork wrong so I had to redo everything, something about 45 day first payment instead of 50. Mistakes happen, I get that, but every phone call or email I make for information/assistance is not returned. I'd say 5 to 1, every 5 times I reach out I get one communique back. I'd give 1 star but the refinance rate is so good I'm giving it 2 stars.

I received a notification that -- OH the lender did not realize it was a used car and the rate is now higher -- !! All the communications and paperwork submitted stated and indicated that it was a used car. After complaints to the BBB the direct lender contacted me and made it right!

    Horrible Communication

    I was told my auto refinance had gone through and everything was finalized and to defer the current months payment. This was not the case. The loan had not gone through and I was never told otherwise. Now I have missed a months payment and my credit has taken a hit. Completely unacceptable. Something should be done.

    This is by far the worst company I have ever dealt with. I made sure to post on all my social media accounts about the horrific and corrupt customer service I have dealt with here.     Took a month of playing phone tag to get my loan finished. My agent quit in the middle of the process and I was passed around to various agents (one of which had the worst customer service skills I’ve ever encountered). Found out that I didn’t receive the lowest possible offer when the agent had to hunt around due to a special circumstance, so I didn’t trust that the agent was truly looking thoroughly. Still not entirely sure that I received the best deal but it’s better than what I had. The initial paperwork I received and filled out had the incorrect information on it so I had to fill out and mail back twice. I would look for another broker before I go through this mediocre company again. Update: Rate Genius contacted me regarding this review and seemed genuinely regretful that I had such a rough time with my refinance. Their QC department is looking into the issues I had, which I greatly appreciate. Because they have been responsive to my discontent, I have given them 4 stars rather than the initial 2. If the rest of the company operates as the QC department has, then they will provide good service.

    Will recommend to everyone! Rate genius sent me a letter in the mail with a guaranteed offer on my 2017 Nissan Rogue that I was paying almost $600 a month for with a 17% interest rate. Completely ridiculous. So I took a chance on rate genius and I was immediately impressed with their customer service. Within 24 hours I was offered a new loan with a different company for $150 less a month and a new interest rate of 6%! So happy I refinanced my auto loan through rate genius.

    This company is a joke. I contacted them to refinance 2 car and 1 motorcycle loans. I worked with a contact named Eddi. He was next to useless. He could not get paperwork filled out correctly and I had to redo documents at least 5 times because he could not get my address and name correct. The credit union that he set me up with required automatic payments so I was asked to send him a voided check so that he could set them up. I did, and he did not, so now I am facing a late fee because he did not do his job and set up the auto payments like he told me he would. What a waste of time and energy dealing with this company and especially that employee. Worthless, just worthless

    Horrible experience. Get pre-qualified letter for refinance on my auto loan in the mail. It isn't "pre-approved", it is "pre-qualified". Over the phone I tell the rep multiple times I don't want to run my credit if there is not 100% certainty I will get approved for the refinance. I owe 81% of what I should on my car (paying off early). I have 750 credit score. They assure me that I am pre-qualified and will get a refinance. The next day they tell me I am not approved.

    The company started off great with it being small it did start off like a whole family base meaning ever one got along and even when the pay is not as good as other companies everyone stayed and liked it but this year there was a merger and the president of the company as we were told he decided to look at something else and left the company after that people started quitting or were let go not just from customer service but also senior positions overall the company was mark one of the top places to work but with in a small amount of time that changed overall I don't think its one of the best places to work

    I looked into getting a refinance loan through this company and at first they offered me a much better interestes rate. Once I was able to speak with Angelica she told me that since they had more details on my car that my rate was going to be 5% higher. She claimed that I was really underwater on my vehicle. I had done my research prior to applying and I knew exactly where I stood on my loan and if $800 difference makes me underwater than so be it. I am with a great finance company now and I have no issues aside from my higher interest rate. So with that said it would have had to be a great deal for me to change up. With the 5% higher raise they gave me this only put me a small percentage down from my current company so I politely declined RateGenius' offer. Well, as soon as I did that Angelica copped such an attitude and told me that she was just going to close out my application if i was not interested in listening to her. RateGenius needs to work with their employees to get them to understand that not everyone is going to take their offer and that it is OK. It is never OK for a rep at a company to be so snarky totally unprovoked. I was completely taken aback by her attitude and it was not justified in the slightest. I stayed polite and simply said yes Angelica please close my application have a great day and thanks.

    Not good in my experience. Get a credit union account and try thru them instead. They wasted a bunch of my time and told me my income wasn't enough. Trying to refi a 13,000 dollar loan on a 3 year old car with under 25k miles on it. Not a huge amount and I make close to 52k a year. Not recommending them at all.

    Bait and switch Scam - Stay Away from this company

    Bait and switch - SCAM - Stay away from rateGenius. My credit score is 910 and rate genius said they couldn't find a lender for my car loan. First they bait you with a 1.99% apr, but they are not able to deliver and said that because of my credit?? And it showed the score. I know my credit is almost as high as it can get on FICO system. My advice: Don't waste your time with this bait and switch scammers.

    My application did get rejected but not before being bombarded by mailers and ads on credit karma. Despite a credit score of 750 plus (not anymore thanks to rate genius) i got a reject and had to call up every day of my week to find my status. Service industry is a 2 way street and rate genius seems to be hit or miss.

    These are the most unprofessional, unscrupulous people I have ever dealt with. The loan officers are extremely rude. When I asked to cancel my loan application because they would not honor the rate I was given and because my first payment was due less than 30 days it resulted in a yelling argument, and a threat to ruin my credit.     I was really skeptical, but...

    I was really skeptical, but they did exactly what they said they would. Actually, I turned on Bluetooth and refinanced my auto loan in the car on my commute home! My loan officer, Rebecca Snowden, was very quick to communicate what was going on at each step, and was able to drop my rate to less than 1/3 of my original APR.     My loan Rep is Ryan Huddleston. This guy has a serious deficiency in customer service. A real anger problem from our first conversation to the last! All these positive reviews are suspect to me. This guy is a professional jerk and obviously works in a chop shop sales environment with others like him. Yelling through the phone and his obnoxious manners are way to obvious to ignore if you're a co-worker. His supervisor obviously knows how horrible and rude Ryan Huddleston is, but they keep him on payroll. I had to request completion of loan docs with another loan rep. Couldn't deal with an a-hole like Ryan anymore. Yeah, these positive reviews on here are definitely hacks. To much good to say about a chop shop sales force!
