Rewards & Cashback

The Cash Back, Student Cash Back, and Chrome cards pay 5% on purchases from retailers such as Amazon, grocery shops, and gas stations, as well as any spending through PayPal. You can earn up to a maximum of $1500 per quarter.

With the Student Chrome, Secured, and Chrome cards, you earn 2% cash back on up to $1000 of purchases made in gas stations and restaurants, including cafés, takeaway, and deliveries.

If you’re a hockey fan, the NHL® Discover it® card offers rewards such as 5% discounts at grocery stores and on gym memberships. You can earn up to a maximum of $1500 per quarter.

With each of these cards, you’ll also earn up to 1% cashback on all other purchases.

Aimed toward regular travelers, the Discover it® Miles card pays 1.5 miles for every dollar of spending, which can then be redeemed for cash or as a credit towards your next travel purchase.

Whichever card you choose, Discover’s 2x Match service will also pay an unlimited dollar-for-dollar match on all cashback you earn during the first year.

Participating retailers offering cashback at enhanced rates alternate on a quarterly basis, so you should check Discover’s website for up-to-date offers.

The Application Process

You can apply for a Discover card online or over the phone if you meet the following requirements:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have a US address
  • Have a Social Security number
  • Can show proof of college enrollment (if applying for a student card)

Before you apply, you can check whether you would be pre-approved by entering details such as your name, address, total gross annual income, and Social Security number into the lender’s online tool. You’ll then see the APR and offers you could potentially qualify for.

If you’re applying for the Secured Card, you’ll need to provide a refundable security deposit when you apply. The amount of this deposit will become your credit limit.

Discover doesn’t have a minimum score requirement as it will review your credit score as part of your overall financial situation. However, you’re likely to need a good or excellent score if you’re applying for a high-paying rewards card.

In most cases, you’ll receive an instant decision on your application, although this could take longer if the lender needs to verify any of the information in your application.

Once your card has arrived, you can activate it online or by contacting Discover’s customer services.

Help & Support

You can contact Discover’s US-based agents through online chat or over the phone, with its telephone service being available in both English and Spanish.

When we contacted the company over online chat, we received an extremely polite and helpful response in under 5 minutes.

I’ve had great service from Discover

I’ve had great service from Discover. Been a cardholder for years. No issues. Got a personal loan from them a few months ago. Everything has gone seamlessly. Funds in my account in less than 48 hours. Their app is definitely one of the best out there!

Discover cancels accounts and lowers credit without warning

So I used my Discover card for a few months when I first got it, but paid it off like a good person. I went to go try and use it and they had canceled my card. I eventually did find the email, but they never even sent me a letter and when I called them, the manager said they will NOT even consider re-opening it. WOW All because I hadn't used it in a while. They could have at least sent an email or a letter saying they would cancel it if I didn't use it within X months, but they didn't. I spoke to a friend who said the following: "they cancel accounts that have not been used in over one year. Happened to me. No warning, no appeal, nothing. I also know they downgraded my son’s credit card limit because they thought his utilization rate on OTHER accounts was too high. Again, no warning, his card just gets declined when he thought he had ample available credit." They used to be so nice to me and now this. TERRIBLE experience now.

I applied for a perDo Not Use Discover Bank For Anything sonal debt…

I applied for a personal debt consolidation loan through Discover. I was approved for the amount I had requested. I didn't know until I was filling out the final steps of the application that Discover bank wants a list of your creditors and they will pay the bills you want to consolidate. If there are any funds left, those get deposited into your bank account. My opinion is that if I am responsible enough to maintain a good credit score in order to be approved for the loan, then I can certainly pay the bills I want to consolidate. It made me feel like I couldn't be trusted to use the funds in which they were intended, so I am not going to proceed with the loan process. Don't use their credit cards either. I had one to use for emergencies, and since I didn't use it enough, they closed my account. Lastly I read several bad reviews from other customers who used consolidation loans and say that Discover did not pay their creditors or give them any funds that were left over still charging them interest fees.

Do not get a Discover Card..

Do not get a Discover Card... If you already have one NEVER EVER use it for recurring payments. I signed up for a monthly service with no term obligation. The service was no longer available to me but the merchant kept billing the card. I opened a dispute with Discover who gave me an itial credit but then charged it to my account again saying that since I once authorized the merchant they cannot block the charge or credit me for the charge where I did not receive service. This happened again the following month and Discover agent told me the only way I can stop paying these charges is to close my discover account. I had to do it which will have a negative impact on my credit rating. There is nothing you can't get from some Visa or AMEX cards that you get from Discover... NEVER get this card. And if you have one NEVER EVER use it for a recurring purchase.

    DO NOT BANK WITH DISCOVER

I opened a Discover checking account around June 28, and they decided to close it on July 25 for "suspicious activity". I did absolutely nothing wrong, and now they won't return my money for 60 days. I cannot wait 60 days, who can? I called everyday between July 25 - July 29, and no one could help me get the money faster or even an explanation as to what happened. Someone told me I would receive a letter in the mail stating what happened (implying it would come before my money), but then someone told me today that letter would not come until my check came with it. It is not benefiting them at all to hold it that long, meanwhile I'm the one suffering without my money.

Consumers are at risk of loss everytime they use Discover Card

I was subject to an online scam booking a hotel room using my Discover Card. I recognized the fraud immediately in part because as soon as I hit the complete reservation button I received a Discover Card alert that my transaction threshold had been exceeded. This alerted me my card had been charged for more than I expected and including unauthorized charges. So I called Discover and they said they couldn’t do anything until the charges post. They sent me a transaction alert then said they couldn’t do anything about it, very amusing - so what’s the point of the alert. So I called the merchant to cancel the transaction and the customer service number was to an offshore call center who canceled the hotel reservation, but said it was non-refundable because I needed to cancel by yesterday. And I said I couldn’t cancel yesterday because I booked today. Note part of the merchant scam was not disclosing the bogus cancellation policy or the 50% “service charge” until after the “”complete your reservation” button was entered. So Discover didn’t even buy that an egregious charge disclosed after a transaction was “approved” was authorized by the card holder. I disputed the transaction with Discover 3 consecutive times and every single time the merchant sent in documentation that I did cancel on time so they denied the dispute. In meantime I had rebooked the hotel directly with the hotel so I am out quite a bit for this scam. The last conversation with Discover they agreed this was a scam, but said a scam is not fraud as covered in the user agreement. So they will not remove the charge because they said I authorized it. Even though they acknowledge it looks like a scam. I asked for the merchant documentation to review and they two two weeks to send it. They would not provide me with information about the merchant and the phone numbers they had for the merchant (CCI Hotels) we’re not working numbers. The internet is littered with complaints about true merchants business practices yet Discover has decided this is not their problem, it’s mine. In the short term this is my problem, but I. The long run this problem is Discover Cards. There should be consequences for enabling fraudulent merchant behavior and mistreating customers. Please thumbs up if you agree.

    Worst Bank I've Ever Had

Awful Awful Debit Account experience. I opened a debit account a month ago with Discover, and they made a business decision to close the account with my money still in it. Now I have to wait up to 60 days to get my money back. That was all of my money. I’m screwed, and I can’t even pay rent and other bills. 0/10 do not recommend.

    Is Discover near bankruptcy?

My first guess would be that Discover is going bankrupt, or struggling to stay solvent. They send a fishy email claiming that they need an IRS form completed, but when you call customer service to ask about this email, they tell you it is a pfishing scam, and that it did NOT come from Discover, and to disregard those emails. But then later they freeze your account, and have stripped all forms of customer support to non-existent levels. I have held 2 discover accounts for years, and have a perfect history with them. No other credit card company has done this to me.

Don't waste your time on an application with Discover!!!

I had a Discover card for about 5 years. They sent me an offer, that if I got someone to sign up, they would give us each $100. I talked my girlfriend into applying for a Discover It card. Knowing her credit score is over 800! She is a half owner of our house, bought a brand new Toyota, etc. Didn't think they'd turn her down! She called in a credit application, and they refused her a card. When I called to inquire they got nasty with me. When her denial letter came back it showed an 815 score for her, but they claimed not enough income! Needless to say after 5years I cancelled my Discover account with a 0 balance!

So June 22 2022 @2:30am I received an email about unusual activity. So I attempted to reach out to Discover to see what the issue was and to my surprise there is a 2-3 hour wait time to speak with someone?! so I hung up. I have a very busy life on top of being a mother of 3 small children.2-3 hours is not reasonable for me.. I barely have an hour to myself let alone 2-3. Here we are today July 2022 & my account is still frozen.. the wait time is still 2-3 hours to speak with some. Like what the hell is going on here?? I just want Discover close my account and send me my balance to my address on file. The audacity of you people to freeze my account and be impossible to get ahold of?! I don't recommend anyone bank with Discover they're very unprofessional unreasonable and all around ridiculous! At this point I don't want to talk to anyone. I want my account closed and my money in my checking account sent to me! NOW! ENOUGH OF THE GAMES! They can not do this to people! I think that there should be a class action lawsuit against these people for disrupting our lives with there bs security team. I was forced to cancel summer camp for kids because of this! That's not fair! Something has to be done! Let's start the class action lawsuit!!

Awful experience, will never use again!

Discover locked me out of my account - can’t log in, can’t use debit card, nothing. Customer service won’t even tell me why. I have to talk to the “Security Department.” I’ve been on hold for a combined 12 hours over the last 48 hours trying to talk to someone in the “Security Department”. No one answers. Calls drop after about 3 hours and then I have to start all over. Meanwhile, I can’t access any money to pay bills or buy groceries. They are literally holding my money hostage and I have no idea why because I just sit on hold! The worst experience I have ever had with customer service from any type of business because THERE IS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! Just a 30 second long piano loop that plays over and over for hours.

I wish I could give zero stars

I wish I could give zero stars. I applied for a discover personal loan on 6/23 and was told I was prequalified for the loan. I accepted the loan and provided them with what I needed to pay off and direct deposit information. Was told they will pay it off and then transfer the balance to my checking account to pay off other cards. Checking the Status a few hours later it’s saying they couldn’t approve the loan. I called and was told it was a glitch and give it 24-48 hours and call again; I have been calling since with all these incompetent reps telling me something different. They cancelled the old application and did a new one and now I’m being told it’s under review. Review for what? No one can answer and they cannot provide a time frame. So I’m guessing a review can take one year? 5 years? I’m confused. Discover loans is ridiculous and I would not advise on it. I needed the loan to consolidate my CC’s and they are making it so difficult. If anyone from discover is seeing this please do better!

    Horrible customer service

As another reviewer naiomi wrote, I also have a frozen account due to "suspicious activity" after owning the account for about a month. Yesterday I was on hold for 3 hours until the phone hung up. I called again and their fraud office closed. As I am writing this I have been on hold for two hours. I cant see or use my money. This is a ONLINE ONLY BANK they should have 5x the amount of reps than a regular bank uses. I am on hold to speak to a REP and then she will transfer me to the fraud office and who knows how long I will be on hold with them. Regretting my decision banking here.

This is literally by far THE MOST…

This is literally by far THE MOST DISGUSTING, UNPROFESSIONAL BANKING service I have EVER had. I hadn’t even had my account for a month. Not a full thirty days and they randomly shut my account down and suspended it because of “unusual account activity” THERE WASNT ANY! I tried to log in, they wouldn’t let me. I couldn’t chat with anyone because they needed to verify it was me by logging in but I couldn’t log in!!!! I also had to call in customer service but there was a 90 minute wait just to speak to someone. All in all, they froze my accounts with all of my money and basically no proof of anything, and can’t get into contact with anyone. DO NOT BANK HERE!!!!!

    We deserve rewards also

Faithful cardholder for a few yrs Cashback match is a great perk to join but once this card is put into rotation it’s just ok. Credit monitor & fraudulent alerts come kind of standard nowadays, my beef is with the credit increases especially w/ this current economy situation. You can follow bankrate 3 rules to getting a good chance @ getting the increase & I still got nothing, please adjust that algorithm to lookout at least for good standing current customers. The live loan reps usually give out some valuable tips about their company, credit questions & other alternative solutions.

Discover has a 100% US based customer service.

Discover has the best customer service!!! In recent years many companies began outsourcing their calling centers offshore such as the philippines. It is usually a waste of time talking to them being that they don't know english and are not very knowledgeable. ON THE OTHER HAND, DISCOVER HAS A US BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE ONLY!! There is almost no wait time to connect with a intelligent knowledgeable agent. Thank you discover for putting your customers first, unlike the other companies which save money by hiring foreigners at the expense of their clients. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

I’ve held a Discover card account with usage of their mobile app for over 2 years now. DISCOVER has added an ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION feature where they scan the web and opt u out all those intrusive sites that share your personal info! This is a really exclusive amenity for being a Discover member. I get compelled to share this because I am big on privacy and credit, and I’ve never seen this service! GREAT LEVEL UP!

Discover does not protect clients against unknown charges!

Discover declined to refund me an unknown charge as their company states. While purchasing 2 websites on Wix.com, an unknown charge was found. After reporting the unknown charge to Wix, they denied our request for refund as it was a few days outside their 14-day return policy. As a customer, we assumed Wix would be understanding and refund the unused website plan (that was never used). Apparently, they'd rather spend $115 paying their employees to fight with me over the money instead of just simply refunding us. After reviewing the case, Discover failed to protect us from an unknown charge as they claim to do. I provided them with the invoice that was found to be charged to our account as evidence. Apparently, Discover does not stand behind their clients as they claim...

I opened the account, got the card, activated it and the first transaction mere minutes later is declined for 'security'. Waste of time and customer service was useless. Closed the account per my request without any security verifications. So I can't use the card without confirming who I am but I can close the account without confirming who I am???? And five (5) representatives can't explain to me how that's possible? 'Excellent customer service'? 'Security is very important'? I don't think so.

    Unauthorized control over my money

Despite having an 800+ FICA credit score, Discover would only give me a $2,000 credit limit. I had a $2,700 purchase to make, so I transfered money from a Discover deposit account to pre-pay my credit card account. I had a $3,600 credit balance, but Discover declined my $2,700 purchase. I called and spoke to a representative and a supervisor, and they told me I could not use my own money because the purchase was more than my credit limit. They exerted unauthorized control over my $3,600 credit balance which in my state is a crime. I closed my card account and I am withdrawing all my money from our 3 deposit accounts.

    Disappointed Discover

I tried to file a dispute with Discover. For over 3 months I tried working with them on this matter. The agents were inconsistent, careless, and honestly a nightmare to deal with. They couldn't give me any solid evidence to support why they validated the purchase and refused to send me documents on my file that I am entitled to. Basically, if you want a bank you can trust who will follow through with what they say they will do, don't bank with Discover.

    Good so far

I have only banked with discover for about 5 months but it has been a good experience so far. Their mobile app is convenient and customer service replies to messages within 24 hours. They also gave me useful information when I made an inquiry on behalf of a relative who wanted to open an account from another country. And the interest rate for my savings account is about 10x what I get from my local credit union. The one thing that seems off is the debit card that is supposed to give you 1% cash back. The first day I used the card I spent about $100 but only got $0.63 cash back which is a lot less than 1%.

    Discover owes balance due

Discover owes my deceased spouse a balance of $97. They refuse to make the check out in my name, and my bank won't take accept the check in someone else's name. I sent the check back to Discover but never heard back from them. I finally called them. Discover requires specific paperwork to even LOOK INTO options to resolve this, and the time / effort far exceeds what it's worth. In addition, they never contacted me to say what they needed, it was only after I contacted them. They successfully cheated me out of the money they legally owe.

Great debit card and customer support

Been banking with them for close 2 two years - and I gotta say initially there were issues with trying to log in and for a few months I relied on my other online banks. Well I learned my lesson, those other online banks ended up allowing fraud charges and ignoring disputes to the turn of $3k I will probably never get back despite filing with BBB and CFPB. Discover debit card you get money back and that in itself should be a reason to sigh up. But the few times I needed to file a dispute it was as easy as sending a quick message through the app and within 24hours of less a provisional credit was applied and investigation finalized before the predicted deadline. And you can actually talk to someone in the US without waiting on hold forever.

Excellent credit, yet cancelled for no reason. Why?

Cancelled my [somewhat] high limit credit card for no reason (maybe not using it enough?). Not a big deal- just opened another CC company - approved for double the limit. So maybe it was meant to be? Thanks Discover! More importantly, the surprise that my Discover Card credit limit was suddenly reduced to $500.00 ?? Without notice. Odd. I’ve never experienced this before. And Discover gave no explanation. Btw: Excellent payment history across the board; excellent credit score; excellent income /employment history. Used it for one balance transfer; paid it off in full after the term. Discover profited with a 3% fee. Not sure if that's considered feasible to keep me on as a customer(?)… Who knows? Oh well. I have plenty other CCs happy to have my loyalty :) Thanks!

Discover Card refuses to protect their customers

I purchased InflatR using Discover Card. The product is a piece of junk. I wanted to return the item for a refund, but InflatR refuses to give refunds. I appealed to Discover Card, which is supposed to protect buyers if an item purchased using that card is unsatisfactory. Discover did contact InflatR which stated that I received the item, and if I didn’t like it, tough. Discover removed the temporary credit they had initially applied to my account, saying they could do nothing more. Needless to say, I appealed, but they refused to reinstate the credit. Discover has defaulted on their advertisement stating that that they stand with the customer in case of faulty items purchased using Discover.

    Incompetent customer service

Incompetent customer service. I closed my account after many years when I recently was unable to change the phone number on my profile. It took 2 hours and several calls to customer service to have a rep look into why the software wasn't letting make the change. A rep finally claimed to have made the change for me and promised to report the issue to IT. The next time I tried to log on to my account, my password had been changed and the old phone numbers appeared on the reset screen, so I had no access to my account at all. I can't live with that level of incompetence and closed out the account.

It's a long story but the short of it is I applied for a secured credit card with Discover and was denied. I asked for my$500 security deposit back and it's been since May and they have not returned my deposit. I went to court in November to file a lawsuit. The judge ordered my $500 plus $50 a month penalty for not returning my deposit in a timely manner. From May to November... I'm still waiting for the money... next I will file a lawsuit for $50000..if I don't get the money the Court ordered ASAP...I WOULD NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM AGAIN!!!

Most credit card companies will give you a 1 time exemption if you call in to let them know you accidentally didn't get the bill paid on time. I had a $29 balance and they added on a $29 late fee (very excessive for just 8 days late). They made me wait 45 minutes on the phone to speak with a representative. I found out from my credit report that discover closed my account without notifying me. When I first called it was due to inactivity of 6 months which is nuts. I called back to speak with the right department and they told me it was cause inactivity and my FICO score delinquency on a loan that I am disputing due to fraud. So, each time I have to call and verify my account, they never seem to have the correct phone number on file, even though I get text message alerts to my phone. I found out that the reason they can never verify my account is because they are using a third party system that pulls my information from my credit reports, which I never gave them permission to do. The phone numbers on my credit report are old. When they ask me for a new number, they somehow can’t update it to the number I call them from…. even though I get text alerts. None of the agents or the supervisors seem to want to listen to customers telling them that their system is flawed. I’m so over this company. They frustrate tf out of me

After 6yrs, 20k in available, with a credit score of 800, Discover said they sent me some IRS form (I never got) and decided to close my account. No phone call, no email, no letter, nothing. Out of the blue they decided to close it. What’s really going on is just the beginning. Wells Fargo just went through this exact same thing by canceling their consumer loan and credit line products. They are strapped for cash and need to strengthen their position by removing as much liability as they can off their books. If you have no balance, or a small balance, but a high available balance, beware! You will be next. This is only a small preview on what’s to come. More banks and lending institutions will be following suit.

    Why bank at Discover Bank

Why bank at Discover Bank? Here it is year 2021 and Discover Bank still mails things that can be posted in your account on their site as if it were back in the early 1900’s when they were established. They insist that everything needs to be mailed. Do they get a kickback from the post office? There are other banks and credit unions that use their sites to ‘send you letters’, but apparently Discover has not figured out how to do this. You should be able to sign into your account, go to ‘Secure Message’ and get whatever it is that they feel needs to be read. These other banks that call themselves online banks do that. I am still trying to figure out why Discover cannot. I went through the bother of investigating the Federal Banking Rules & Regs to find within those articles & sub-articles that any and ALL communications need to be “mailed or delivered”. And I spoke with a Federal Banking lawyer who explained that the “or delivered” refers to the bank’s ability to post it in a *Secure Message* portal on the website rather than mail. I pointed this out to Discover and they stated that it is not in their policy to do that. WHY?? No reason given. “Just because I said so”, I guess would be the answer. When I first started with them, they were a better company. Since then, they have been going downhill to being less than helpful and more inconsiderate towards the planet. In a nutshell, it is Discover’s policy to add to the landfill, let you be vulnerable to identity theft (unless you want to pay for their “Identity Theft Protection” plan) and get your mail late (the post office states that it takes 7-10 business days for mail). So if it is important, it is already too late. Are you sure you want to do business with them?

Discover has put a hold on my card and…

Discover has put a hold on my card and will be closing it by Aug 2021 because I won't give them access to my IRS info. They are claiming this is a random audit however I have relatives that reside at my same address , but in no way are connected to my Discover card (they have their own/separate accounts with Discover) and they got the same notifications requesting access to IRS info. However my Son who just got out of college has defaulted on his Discover card which neither my husband or I are authorized user on. My Discover card is not even connected with my husband's, he has his and I have mine, neither of us are authorized users on each others accounts we keep our credit cards separate. My husband got the same request for his IRS documentation. I think Discover is searching out family members of Discover card holders that have defaulted and are penalizing them for the family members defaulting. I just don't see this as being random audits as they are suggesting. I think This bullying tactic by Discover is shameful. I havent paid late, haven't ran my card up the limit, never lied about my income, never asked for a credit limit increase to $11k, they did the credit increases without me ever asking. I have been a good customer to Discover for over 5 years. They claim they can request this info because they are a bank and it's legal for then to do so. Discover card should get ZERO STARS for their disgraceful business practices. I wanted to put this review on the Discover website but it seems impossible to do that. I don't think the reviews on their website are real. I'm sure they will be losing a lot of good on time paying customers, that actually bring in money versus the defaulted ones whom you probably will only get pennies on a dollar for after you sell them to collection agencies. Stop harassing and bullying good paying customers and closing accounts if your demand for IRS info is not met. DO Better Discover. Your Good customers deserve it.

    Crooked, dirty company

Crooked, dirty credit company. I am a longtime customer who has never missed a payment and my account is otherwise in perfect standing. Discover does not care if its card is used to defraud and harm its customers. I was sent a non functioning, $1000 exercise bike by Nautilus/Bowflex, and the company was completely unresponsive. We literally could not get a phone call answered, and the only email responses were generic, “Call us at this number” stock replies weeks later. I submitted the case to Discover along with photos and emails showing my attempts to get support, and they sided with the merchant. I appealed it and reopened the case, as nothing had been resolved and still hadn’t been contacted. Discover again sided with the merchant and closed it out with no explanation given.

    Don't do business with Discover

I had a Discover account for over 20 years, never made a late payment, but much of that time my account was maxed out. In fact, shortly before my account was unceremoniously, unapologetically closed, they raised my limit from $9K to $12K in the apparent hope that I would continue to owe them even more interest each month. Instead, I began to manage my finances a bit better and got my Discover card paid off. Shortly after they no longer were receiving hundreds of dollars in interest from me, I was informed via email that my account had been closed due to lack of use. DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. You know, during a time when there was a moratorium on evictions and such, Discover closed my account of over 20 years and shut off what could have been a lifeline for me had I lost my job or had other financial hardships during Covid, as millions of others were experiencing. When I called to discuss the matter, they told me once the account is closed, it's closed, there was nothing they could do for me, but I was welcome to apply for a new card. Incidentally, closing the account and removing the $12K worth of available credit affected my credit score negatively. Greedy, disgusting corporation.

If I can only give a -0 review

If I can only give a -0 review, AWFUL!! Stay home Mom of Twins for a couple of years, started working just recently signed up with Discover IT this year April. Received and email stating they closed my account 2 Days ago & this was their explanation: We are writing to notify you that we have closed your Discover® card account effective immediately. We regularly conduct reviews to evaluate our customers' accounts, and during a review, we were unable to verify personal information on your account. We evaluated your account and under the terms of your Cardmember Agreement, a business decision was made to close your account. Our decision was based in whole on the information found on your account. Any Cashback Bonus® or Miles rewards balance will be applied as a credit to your account, or, if the account has a zero balance at the time of closure, a check will be issued. If your account has a credit balance, you may request a refund check, or one will be sent automatically after four months of the credit balance being on your account. I was an ontime paying customer, was told from one of their staff while looking into my account that is was "SUPERB" Not sure why this vwrification process is not done when I initially applied? Because I would've never deposited $500 or give them my Business. I would've tried another credit card company. Whats apaulding is that if the reason was because they were unable to verify personal info in my account, why wouldn't they call me prior to canceling my account without notice, to atleast figure where things went wrong & how can it be fixed. I'm trying to get my Credit going due to the gap I had while staying home with my kids, & this is how they're going to do ME!!! So Supervisor stated that I'm eligible next year to re-apply, I said NO THANK YOU, if you can't even treat your "SUPERB" Customer with some Dignity or RESPECT, like A simple phone call before suddenly closing my account "hey we found something wrong or something doesn't match in your account can you please verify?" Wow, thats just awful way of treating your customer! DISCOVER IT DOES NOT DESERVE MY BUSINESS!!

I applied for a card and was shocked that I had to agree to let Equifax have a tax transcript. It's outrageous. Discover wants me to give a company guilty of multiple egregious data breaches my most personal and valuable data? Please. I will not be doing business with Discover. It just earned a lifetime ban. Shame on NerdWallet for recommending it.

    Poor communication, bad service

A representative called me to tell me that they could verify my ID and I asked her if something is wrong with the account and why is this being done, and she could not give me an answer. She repeated the same thing and sounded like she did not want to talk to me. The second representative I called did not greet me and did not ask for my name. She said she was going to pull up my account and put me on mute for about a minute. I asked Hello? Are you still there? Then I hung up because it does not take that long to pull up my account. She has my social and phone number. If she needed my name she should have asked then. I was informed that the initial verification went through over the phone days before, and I even used the card one time, so why now is the ID not verified? That doesn't make any sense. I called back to speak with someone else about it and she was a lot more open to explaining the details to me. I sent them my social security card and my driver's license which are both valid. If they're going to cancel people's accounts because of this issue, they could at least provide a reason why the extra verification needs to be done. I keep seeing other people got their accounts closed with no notice because of this verification issue and that is unacceptable.

I don't know why discover has such bad reviews since I've never had any problems with them. Whenever I have some issues, like getting my card lost or problems with logging into the app, I call them and they answer within 5 minutes, unlike other banks or credit card services. I hate waiting time but discover always have enough people to answer you promptly. I also love their cashback !

If I could I would not rate them

If I could I would not rate them, Discover offered a approval on a card and I have not open one for over 6 years. I took the opportunity to apply since I taught they were a fair and good company. Take note I do have good credit. They approved my application and then requested for tax papers. After releasing the information they stated they could not verify my identity. Which they cancelled the card. Not that I needed it or have used the card but now it’s show on my report. Not a good experience at all. I’ll stick with the cards I currently have and will never take anything from them.

I applied for a Discover Credit card

I applied for a Discover Credit card. I had credit score of 840. The card got approved for a pitiable amount of $5,000. They then started asking for all the past years (approx 30 years’) IRS documents and started sending documents to me to sign basically to grant them permission to fetch all my past IRS 1040 and complete financial documents. I have a total credit limit of 145,000 between few credit cards and all in great shape hence 840 credit score. When I didn’t agree to sign the consent documents to fetch all my Tax documents from IRS they went ahead and closed the account with ing few days without notifying me. I had never used that card. STAY AWAY FROM DISCOVER CREDIT CARD ISSUED BY DISCOVER FINANCIAL SERVICES. They are NOT worth your time and money.

    Be aware

Be aware, Discover does not stand by their customers!! Last year during the early days of the pandemic I was having a hard time getting a refund back for flights in Europe. I filed a dispute and Discover stood by the airline even though the flight was canceled, Europe was essentially closed to US citizens and I never took the flight, have proof the flight was canceled by the airline and Discover kept my money! Theft as far as I'm concerned.

I have been a card holder with discover for YEARS. Always in good standing monthly bills always paid on time. Out of the blue discover decided to do a random review with no notification to me and decided to close my account due to inactivity. I have not used the card for months due to covid and being a responsible person and not use unnecessary funds and discover decided to close my account. Again this happened with no warning whatsoever. Now I am told there is no reinstating the card, I would have to reapply which would hit my credit which discover has now ruined with no guarantee of the previous credit limit. I have NEVER experienced anything so unacceptable and unprofessional. I am extremely disgusted and I will NEVER use Discover again.

    Super Disappointed

Super Disappointed What a disappointment. I was scammed by a vendor in China with a website and address in US and unfortunately purchased with Discover Card through PayPals. I had picture proof that the item I received was not what I ordered. I started dispute with PayPal in July 2020, then with Discover October 2020 and then this month March 2021 find out that Discover is finding in the seller's favor because I did not return the item to the seller (even though I had no way of doing that because info I have is for the US and seller is in China). It is clear to me that Discover & PayPal's are on the side of the seller and not their customer.

Discover is not loyal to customers

Discover is not loyal to customers in good standing. They decided to harm my credit score by closing my account against my wishes and without warning - because I didn’t use it enough during a dang pandemic - literally. I guess I haven’t been out shopping and traveling enough during Covid for Discover to find value in me as a customer. I’ve charged ridiculous amounts on this card over the years and paid the balance monthly (often bi-weekly). This is how they repay loyalty and good account management. I would recommend Capital One. They have treated me like a valued customer for over twenty years. Plus, Visa and MC are far more widely accepted than Discover anyway. If you go with Discover, watch your back, because as soon as they feel you are not profitable enough for them, they will move on to other customers so they can make more money off late fees and interest charges - no matter what it does to the credit rating of those who have been responsible.

I have been with discover for years and I'm very dissatisfied with the service that I have received. I have made multiple request for them to update my credit utilization score but I keep getting the run around. I made a payment on Jan28th and my utilization was at a 29%. However, discover websites reflects 48% on March 23. My Fico score report was last pulled on 12/28/2020. Please, if you want to build your credit and get a accurate Fico score report go to another bank!

Best bank I've ever dealt with

I am honestly taken aback by all the negative reviews. Of all the banks I've dealt with in my life, Discover is, by far, the one with best customer service. Generally speaking I hate banks and financial institutions. But I like Discover. I don't have a lot of money but they still treat me like a valued customer - like I matter - whenever I contact them. When it comes to services and fees, most financial institutions are all the same. Discover is not that different (except their interest rates for savings accounts is actually better than most.) What really makes them stand out, in my opinion, is their excellent customer service. I'm a very satisfied customer.

Just stay away from this company

Just stay away from this company. The cards they have are not worth the bs you have to deal with or the horrible customer service they have! Ive had a card with them for years and never had to give them access to my tax returns... but will be closing it now and will never again give my business to Discover. I just recently applied for one of their other cards to do a balance transfer. I make $80,000 a year and have an excellent credit score but was denied because I wouldn't give them access to my personal tax returns. There are so many other better credit card companies that won't make you go through this bs after running your credit already. The ignorant customer service reps they have, have to be the dumbest, most unhelpful people ever. Their only response to the issue is "well you can always apply again" 🤦‍♀️ Because people love having their credit run over and over just to be denied again because people don't feel comfortable giving access to tax returns over an unsecured site!!! Not to mention, people get new jobs all the time with income changes so previous tax returns will NOT show income increases!! Just don't even waste your time and definitely don't fall victim to their bs. Its not worth it.

    Bait and Switch

I saw an online offer from Discover gas card that gave 13.9 cents off each gallon of gas. Since I use a lot of gas in my RV, I thought that was a good deal and applied for it. I was immediately approved. But Discover sent me a different card, called Discover-It, whatever that is, which had only 2% off most purchases including gas which is the same as my existing bank credit card. I called Discover and the agent said they did not have any such offer as the one I applied for. Then I checked online and the offer I had applied for was no longer visible. I call this ‘bait and switch.’ I am canceling my account and destroying the Discover card. I never want to do business with that company again!

    Discover, stay far far away!

Discover, one of the worst banks ever. I’ve been a customer with them for a while but they just lost me and my families business. Not only did the Bank side lose a large deposit but they also have yet to respond to the FDIC complaint. Their Office of the President confessed that they were having system issues and their systems were messing up incoming transfers. They stated that they would be sending letters out to affected customers but I still haven’t received one. Secondly, today, they have decided to start cutting customers credit card limits. They are dropping them left and right. They cut my limit almost 10k. I’m assuming Discover is going through some financial hardship. I will be closing all my accounts, pulling my stock from them and closing my credit cards. Years of business and relationship means nothing to them. Stay away from Discover. They clearly are having many issues. Sounds like another Wells Fargo in the making! I hope the get sued and fined.

So disappointed, and would not recommend to anyone.

Honestly, the worst company ever. I signed up for a credit card with them to build my credit as I did not have any credit and needed to build it, the card got approved, I received it and thought that I was all set. Then I realized my account was blocked because I needed to fill out an SSA-form and send a picture of my SSN card, which I did before Christmas. We are now feb 6th, and the account is still blocked. Every time I call them to see what’s going on as I need to start building my credit, they’re telling me that my papers are being reviewed and it should not be much longer but it’s been a month and half already.... on top of that, for a couple days my account was accessible( so not blocked, so I thought I was good to go and could use the card that they had reviewed my documents) but no... I bought a coffee with the card, and a couple days later the account was blocked again. So I called again and asked them what was going on, and they told me the same thing my documents weren’t reviewed and that sometimes their system glitches which is why for a few days I was allowed to use my card and access my account... so now I had to call to pay for the coffee as I couldn’t even access the account to pay it on time. Ridiculous. literally the worst company ever I’m trying to build my credit and could have started already if I went through another company... coming up on 2 months and I called today and still the same thing. Literally unbelievable. I am thinking of closing the account with them, hoping that it won’t hurt my credit as I don’t have one yet, I do not want to get screwed because of them. Avoid them.

Customer for 20 Years, Dropped with Zero Notice

I have been a customer for TWENTY. YEARS. They were literally the first credit card I'd ever received. They closed my account today because of no recent activity, and they did it with zero warning. I called and patiently explained that my father passed away last April and that I used some of what I'd received to finally pay off the card in late May and June. I had, luckily, not had reason to use it, but I would if they reinstated it. I'd simply forgotten I had it. I asked if it could be reinstated and they said no, it could not. This is how you treat people at a time like this? This should be illegal. At the very least, a law should exist that says they have to give you some notice in order to have activity on the card. I'd carried a balance on it for years for which they collected ridiculous amounts of interest. Of course they didn't have any issues then. But I pay it off and eight months later, POOF, they decide to drop me as a customer? Horrible company that has no concept of loyalty or decency.

I was an authorized card holder on my father's account for six years. During this time I paid off my own charges and his too when he became ill. When my dad died Discover cut off the account with no notice. When I tried to PAY my monthly statement I wasn't allowed to but was transferred to an account specialist. I was told to cut up my card and that an estate search would happen to collect the outstanding balance So they have an outside company scour through your dead loved one's assets if there are any bones for them to pick! I won't get another card from Discover after the way I'm being treated.

    Incorrect credit rating to customers

I have had a Discover card for over two decades & have had a good relationship with Discover. When they rate my personal credit score they always drop my FICA score with them by 20 to 30 points or more points from any other credit bureau rating credit score. I have asked many times why they feel that it is necessary to penalize my perfect credit rating inaccurately & they claim it is not them. It is one of the major credit organizations, but I have proven to them that is not so, many times. Yet, they continue to penalize my credit. Thank goodness, no other credit reporting service in America does that to my excellent credit....just Discover. Actually, Discover is a good company to deal with, other than their inability to give an accurate credit rating.

Mediocre card, disrespectful and dishonest customer service

The card itself functions like any other credit card and in my opinion, you get much better benefits and customer service with cards from AmEx or Chase. The worst part is having to interact with Discover's customer service staff. They have always been rude and disrespectful to both my husband and I. They do not apply their policies evenly. For instance, my husband was able to have his APR lowered but they refused to lower mine even though neither of us has any negative issues with our credit. Bizarrely Discover does not offer follow-up phone surveys for their representatives so I doubt they are concerned about the customer experience. I have had my Discover card since college, before the CARD Act of 2009 made it illegal for credit card companies to entice students to sign up for credit cards on college campuses with free gifts. The representatives at Discover have warned me that as my oldest card, my credit score will be damaged if I close my account.

Discover refused to remove negative items

I opened a Discover credit card and immediately enrolled in their automatic payment system. Unfortunately, that system didn't work and the first 3 months of payments weren't automatically paid like they should have been. When I reported it to Discover they admitted they were wrong and removed all the late charges for those payments, but they refused to remove the negative items on my credit report which means for the next 7 years I have to pay for their mistake by having bad credit. I don't understand why if they removed the late charges that they wouldn't remove the credit report items? Anyway it was such a negative experience that I would not recommend Discover to anyone. Get a Visa, Master Card or American Express instead.

I have had a DISCOVER CARD since 1994. Until 2015 I paid my bill in FULL every month. I bought a business in 2015 and had to pay monthly payments (always well above the minimum payment) I never realized the astronomical interest they charged 29.99% APR! I PAID OFF my bill in full in December of 2020 and even slightly overpaid my total amount due and because the check cleared the day AFTER my due date they charged me $316.00 in interest one last time. I will NEVER use this card ever again!!!
