Overview

Tin Leg offers travel insurance for all domestic and international journeys, including business trips, holidays, and adventures. USA Today recently ranked it as the best-value travel insurance provider in 2023.

As well as unexpected medical expenses and emergencies, it protects you against trip cancelations, delays, lost baggage, and other interruptions. With eight plans, competitive pricing, and round-the-clock assistance, just about anyone can travel stress-free with Tin Leg.

Suitable For?

Tin Leg’s policies suit a broad spectrum of domestic and international travelers of all ages. It provides coverage both to healthy individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Tin Leg offers several affordable plans for students and budget travelers. It also has plans that work well for luxury vacationers wanting better primary medical emergency and evacuation coverage.

Additionally, Tin Leg provides coverage for sports equipment loss or delay—making it ideal for golfers, skiers, horseback riders, and other sports enthusiasts. Further, it caters to adventure-seekers wanting high medical coverage limits.

Finally, Tin Leg is an excellent choice for those who think work or life may interrupt their plans. You can opt for policies that let you cancel for medical or work reasons, employment layoff—and even add a CFAR option to your plan.

Features/Highlights

Here are some of Tin Leg’s key features.

  • Plan types: You can choose from eight different travel insurance policies, depending on the nature of your trip, your budget, health conditions, lifestyle, and more.

  • Coverage: Tin Leg covers up to $500,000 for medical emergencies and $1,000,000 for medical evacuation. It also offers up to $2,000 of coverage for travel delays and up to $500 for baggage delays or missed connections.

  • Add-ons: There’s an option to upgrade most plans with a CFAR add-on. This provides partial reimbursement if you cancel your trip for a reason not covered by a policy.

  • Pricing: Tin Leg’s pricing is competitive. Quotes vary by coverage, age, and other factors. I received options starting at $8 per person for a week-long trip to Mexico for a 30-year-old. The same plan costs $17 for a 60-year-old.

  • Multiple methods to file claims: You can file an insurance claim by phone or through a straightforward online process.

Policy Types and Terms Available

Tin Leg offers several travel policies to choose from. At the budget end, the Basic policy is designed to provide travelers with comprehensive coverage at a competitive price. It covers trip cancelation, delay, and interruption. It includes $50,000 for secondary emergency medical coverage and $200,000 for medical evacuation.

The Economy policy is also cost-effective and offers protection against essential travel concerns. It includes $20,000 in secondary emergency medical coverage, $100,000 for medical evacuation, $500 for travel delay, and $200 for baggage delay.

The Standard policy offers the same coverage for travel and baggage delays as Economy, but provides up to $30,000 in secondary emergency medical coverage and $200,000 for medical evacuation. It also includes coverage if your travel suppliers undergo financial default.

Travelers looking for an enhanced policy can opt for the Luxury plan. It offers up to $100,000 of primary medical coverage and $250,000 for emergency evacuation. It also offers additional rental car damage coverage.

Meanwhile, thrill-seekers might consider Tin Leg’s Adventure policy, which covers most adventurous activities. It provides primary emergency medical coverage of $100,000 and medical evacuation of up to $1,000,000. Moreover, it offers accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage and the option to take CFAR coverage.

The Silver policy provides comprehensive cancelation coverage with increased secondary medical coverage of $250,000 and higher reimbursement for travel and baggage delays. There’s also $1,000,000 in medical evaluation and the option to upgrade to primary medical and CFAR coverage.

I was particularly impressed by Tin Leg’s Gold policy, which enhances primary medical coverage to $500,000, includes coverage for missed connections, and offers AD&D and the option to add CFAR coverage. Further, it protects against financial default of supplier coverage.

Finally, larger families or those on longer trips can explore the mid-level Platinum policy. It’s similar to the Gold plan but with less medical coverage. It includes medical emergency and evacuation coverage of $100,000 and $500,000, respectively.

How Safe Is It?

Tin Leg was founded in 2014 by Squaremouth, a leading travel insurance industry expert. All policies are underwritten by one of the following insurance companies, which have all been rated by AM Best according to how trustworthy and reliable they are in making their payouts:

  • Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (A++ rating from AM Best)

  • Starr Indemnity & Liability Company (A rating from AM Best)

  • Spinnaker Insurance Company (A- rating from AM Best)

All Tin Leg policies include a money-back guarantee. Depending on the plan, you can cancel your policy for a full refund within 10-15 days of the effective date of your insurance or scheduled departure date—whichever occurs first.

Help and Support

You can contact Tin Leg’s customer service team daily by phone between 8am and 10pm (ET) or by email. They can support you with local travel and medical advice, lost or stolen credit cards, and more.

Contact the emergency assistance number at any time, any day of the year, if you need urgent assistance regarding your benefits, locating a medical facility, arranging medical evacuation, or other emergencies.

If you need to report a claim, you can do this online or by phone. Depending on your claim, you’ll need to provide details and supporting documents such as receipts, medical invoices, and so on.

Filed a claim days after my return
Filed a claim days after my return, took almost 4 months to get a final answer and get paid and I am an attorney! The back and forth was duplicative and just stalling.

Repetitively asking for same…
Repetitively asking for same information, claims filed last year and still asking for same. If at all possible for no star, or broken star, would award same. Perhaps they have all the time to waste asking for same information, but I QUIT!!!

SCAM COMPANY
Refusing to pay out on a legitimate claim, after taking 4 months and asking me repeatedly to send the same information over and over. They required me to send my bank statements, which I'm wondering is that even legal? I've filed a complaint with the NAIC and the state of Florida. I'm looking into finding a local consumer investigator to take a look and report on them since so many people have been scammed.

Waste of money and time!
Waste of money and time! After having to cut short trip to middle east due to Hamas invasion on Israel, I had to alter travel plans that were "supposed" to be covered by my expensive Tinleg travel insurance. It is now 5 months since I have submitted my claim, 5 (five!) different interchanges with their claims department wanting more and more information. The latest request was to see a copy of our boarding pass from our shortened trip!!! Shameful!

Don't Use Tin Leg Travel Insurance Company!
In October I fractured two vertebra in a boating accident on a remote island in the Galapagos. There was no hospital and no MRI available so my condition was not diagnosed until I returned to the US. However, the pain of two fractured vertebra was so severe, the next day I could not climb into the small prop plane that was the only way off the island. I had to rebook my flight and it took two days before I was able to move enough to get onto the plane. I asked to be reimbursed for the cost of the new plane flight and was told I had to have a letter from a doctor saying I could not leave on the appointed plane, but the doctor did not know my back was broken because he didn't have the equipment to diagnose it, so no letter was possible. I provided documentation of my condition when I returned to US and had an MRI but Tin Leg refused reimburse me for the changed flight.
