What’s Covered? 

Coverage varies according to the specific Progressive insurance plan you choose. A basic accident-only plan is available, but coverage for extra add-ons such as wellness treatments are also available. The following costs can all be claimed for through Progressive:

Insurance Plans & Pricing

Progressive offers 3 affordable coverage options to choose from. The cheapest of these is the Accident Only plan which covers the cost of treatments when pets are injured. For $6 to $10 per month, this package pays out for broken bones, bite and claw wounds, lacerations, and other common injuries.

The middle coverage option is the BestBenefit Accident and Illness Plan, which is advertised as Progressive’s most popular package. For $28 to $40 per month, depending on which optional benefits you go for, this covers all illnesses and injuries. If you take out a BestBenefit subscription, Progressive will payout for emergency care, diagnostic testing,  hospitalization, and many other costs. Although the BestBenefit packages cost more than the Accident Only plan, the price is worth the peace of mind for many pet owners.

Finally, there’s the Wellness Routine Care Plan, which can be purchased individually or as an add-on to Progressive’s other coverage options for $26 a month. A $16 per month version with a reduced level of annual benefits is also available. This add-on covers wellness fees like exams and check-ups, teeth cleaning, vaccinations, and more.

What’s Not Covered

Pre-existing conditions, including illnesses and injuries related to them, aren’t covered by Progressive’s pet insurance policies. Neither are preventive, elective, or cosmetic procedures.

Waiting Periods

All new policyholders must wait at least 14 days before taking their pet to a vet after starting a Progressive policy. Also, you can only purchase a Progressive pet insurance policy for your dog or cat once they are at least seven weeks old.

When filing a claim for a vet visit, pet owners can expect to wait around 2 days for an injury claim reimbursement and around 14 days for an illness claim reimbursement. 

Coverage Limits

Annual limits for reimbursements are set at either $5,000 or an unlimited amount based on the monthly premium you choose.

Reimbursement and Deductibles

Depending on the reimbursement level, which ranges from 70% to 90%, Progressive will cover your expenses after your deductible is met. For example, if your plan covers 80%, you’ll be reimbursed for 80% of the costs minus your annual deductible.

Claims and Service

When your Progressive-covered pet gets treated, you’ll need to pay your vet directly. Then, after you’ve made the payment, you’ll need to file a claim to begin the reimbursement process. To submit a claim, you’ll need to include invoices and/or payment receipts for all relevant expenses. You may also be asked for more detailed descriptions, circumstances, and other pertinent information.

In total, claims processing typically takes no longer than 3 days and reimbursements are usually finalized no less than 5 days after a claim is processed. If you run into a problem with a claim, you can contact a customer representative directly via phone, email or live chat. Alternatively, you can go through Progressive’s well-designed mobile app where agents are available 24/7.

What You Might Like

Accident and illness plans from Progressive are completely customizable. The average monthly payment is between $16 to $40 depending on the coverage you choose and your pet’s characteristics. What’s more, Progressive’s has a user-friendly approach to customer service and handling claims.

What Progressive Could Do Better

While it’s standard in the industry for companies to only offer coverage for dogs and cats, it would be a welcomed addition for Progressive to offer coverage for other types of common pets like birds, reptiles, rodents, and fish.

    Discriminates and unwilling to make reasonable accommodations

    It is absolutely absurd that i have to provide multiple proofs of garaging. I am a live in nanny who is paid cash, so I have none of the documents they require. It’s ridiculous that they won’t accept your car registration or banking statements for proof. This company discriminates against people who do not fit into their desired categories and don’t make reasonable accommodations for those who don’t fit in their box. I look forward to changing car insurance companies as soon as my current policy expires. I will never have a progressive policy again and will not recommend them to anyone I know.

    I wouldn’t even give a star if I…

    I wouldn’t even give a star if I didn’t have to. Horrible company. Made false accusations on a first time claim ever made in my life. Jessica H. the progressive rep. states my rust didn’t match the rust in the back of the vehicle. I was hit by a deer on the door and back panel was in fact from same incident. Apparently she thought she was a forensic scientist and knows how old rust is. Stated the rust was older than it was and basically called me a liar. On the phone she kept saying “there was something before this””What happened before this” like i was lying. When in fact i was hit by a deer. The head hit my door than slide down side of my car and it’s body hit above my drivers side tire. which is less exposed to snow rain sleet. so it would look different than my door. They wanted my bank records and call logs text messages. not sure why any of it was relevant except it would of proved where i was , but the pictures i got from my daughter’s phone of the damage was “fraud“. She said the color of the pictures didn’t look right. It had the dates on it. I have text messages proving where i was right by where it happened as well. i had the documents they wanted but their minds were already made up . Glad i received my letter that they were canceling my policy. Because rather be with someone that would not try to get out of covering the accident. Cheap insurance is not always the best.

    Day 4 of trying to talk to a Rep

    Day 4 of trying to talk to a Rep. Each day I called and was on hold for over an hour before hanging up. Am on hold right now for 1.5 hours as I write this review. Just like the commercial; Flo and the rest of them are out and about goofing off instead of working. Terrible customer service, plan on shopping for another insurance co.

    Progressive's representatives LIE just to make a sale!

    Back in September 2020, we signed up for Progressive. Our phone representative assured us that we would be paying SIX months of insurance, and be covered for a year. Before anyone jumps all over me, my mother said that back in the late 90s, certain companies offered that type of policy. We asked her SEVERAL times if Progressive offers that option. She swore that they did. Well, we called All State, and the representative blatantly told us that the Progressive rep lied to us just to make the sale. All of this came to light when the app said no further payment needed one day, and the next, they're saying our renewal fee was due. The renewal fee was almost $100 more than we were paying for those 6 momths. And those raised payments would last till September 2021. So we decided to go with All State, because the rep was honest, and gave us a great quote. NEVER use Progressive for insurance, EVER!!

    Progressive auto insurance isn't worth it

    Progressive auto insurance isn't worth it, if you ever have a claim. I have a small crack in my windshield and Progressive won't fix my windshield with no glass deductible. The claim rep was rude called twice and still no windshield.
