Travelex Fees and Rates

For international money transfers with Travelex you’ll pay a fixed rate of £3 for anything up to £300, and then after that it’s calculated as a percentage of the money you’re sending, and the fee will be shown to you before you approve the transaction. For instance, on the company website, Travelex lists the fee for a £1,000 transfer as £6.50. The company also determines the exchange rate you receive based on the foreign exchange market with a small margin that it adds on top.

There is also a £20 cancellation fee and a £20 fee for incorrect or incomplete unique identifiers. You may also face third party fees from the financial institution that is receiving the transfer. 

Standard delivery—which takes 1-5 days—is free, but if you’d like to ensure your transfer is received within 1-2 days you’ll have to pay a £8.95 fee for “Swift” delivery.

    Utterly unreliable

    I’ve used this card for several years. On a trip to Europe in the last week the app and website failed repeatedly to load the card when I needed it. I eventually did get money loaded after a call to the helpline. However, when I got home, I discovered one of the failed reloads had now gone through as well, even though I’d had an email saying it had failed. This random reload happened several days after it originally failed and I was sent the failure email. So, it’s unreliable and will take money from your bank account when travelex say they are not going to. I will be looking for a reliable service that doesn’t charge for periods the card isn’t used.

    Travelex Money Card BEWARE!

    I had a Travelex Money Card, which I used in the Eurozone instead of carrying Euros in cash. It had been very useful but during the COVID pandemic, they decided to go ahead & charge the dormant card fee of £2 per month. I challenged this & they said because I could have loaded more money, used it in the UK, it was dormant in their eyes & the pandemic wasn’t a contributing factor. They also said some of these uses could incur a further charge. What a callous response. Don’t bother. I did call the help line, they were the ones who gave me the advice I complained about originally.

    They lucky to even get 1 star

    They lucky to even get 1 star, put in for £306 worth of Turkish lira, same as last year, “all details the same”, this time it failed a security check, they still took the payment, kept it pending for a long time, I rang numerous customer service, they didn’t help in the slightest, they just kept telling me to get in touch with my bank, my bank said as it’s pending, the company need to cancel payment and refund it back. Clearly the company hasn’t done this, I’m still waiting for a refund, 0 help from anyone. Company is a joke, AVOID at all costs. Tbh they’ll properly reply to this review quicker than they reply to my case. Typical. AVOID!!

    Worst experience! Bought a Travelex Moneycard and I wasn’t able to use it on holiday it wasn’t activated and money had gone out of my account but not onto the card! The whole holiday they couldn’t resolve this poor customer service! DO NOT BUY THE TRAVELEX MONEY CARD!!!

    Absolutely 100% useless. Money was booked well in advance but when we went to collect from the Tesco instore desk, no one was there. This is the second time of using them and it was the same both times. Rang their office and was basically met with "Oh well, that's a shame what do you want us to do about it?" Eventually got them to return the money but that takes over 48 hours for some unknown reason so now I have to somehow find double and get it changed somewhere else. Never again. The system here makes me put one star. No way do they deserve even that.

    Today's Base Rate Average. £879=$1200 If you want to give your money away exchange it for travel money at Travelex in any Tesco store. They have the worst exchange rates compared to any of their competitors. £915=$1200 £35.00 Exchange charge. This is daylight robbery. And no doubt a reflection of how their business is run. M&S, Post Office and many others all have much fairer rates. Stay away.

    Terrible terrible website and customer…

    Terrible terrible website and customer service. We have had nothing but trouble from the first day with our travelex card. It is now 2 years on and we have used the card in USA, NZ, AUS and UK and each time there have been problems. Currently we are not able to log on to the website, the customer service people tell us that they are charging us an "inactivity fee" even though we cant travel abroad because of COVID, and the last rep said that they would transfer some money between currencies so there was no inactivity fee. Absolutely horrible to deal with in every respect. This is the worst review I have ever left for any service ever, and Travelex, YOU DESERVE IT!!!!

    Disgraceful - over £1 per 1 EUR

    Disgraceful, 1 star is far too much. I was just charged 315.43 GBP for 300 EUR. I never expected good rates from Travelex, but neither would I expect to be charged over £1 per EUR. When I realised that the exchange rate was actually other way round, I wanted to return the currency straight away, but was refused. Other people were clearly more observant because all the machines and desks were competely deserted, during a considerable traffic at Heathrow. I am not really sure why I've been using this establishment, which has been during frequent business trips, but for sure this was the very last time.

    (On 23rd august) I was misinformed about Travelex Card and how I’ll be able to withdraw from the account, leaving me stuck with £2000 in a travelex card with no way of taking it out abroad. When abroad I was told that if It does not show your name on the Travelex Card (which mine didn’t) it results in you being turned down by branches abroad. Which wasn’t informed to me by the Travelex employee and left me with a useless card abroad with caused major issues for me and my family. After going to multiple Travelex locations in Dubai, I was told to join the online banking but that was another obstacle which led to technical difficulty and wouldn’t allow me to login at any point as it couldn’t find my account. All ATM machines were also unable to be of any help and couldn’t recognise the card. Emails were sent with complaints and demanding assistance but I received no replies, the customer service from calls was also very unhelpful. Now I’ve come back to the branch in the UK and told the employee that i wanted to cancel for the account and reclaim the unused £2000, I was told I could only take out £1250!!!! (Converted from Dubai Dirham) which is around £800 loss. even though I’ve tried my best to resolve the situation and take out the money abroad on top of facing many issues with no support. Calling a supervisor from England I was appalled by the lack of empathy and guidance for my situation and I hope no one has to go through this.

    Travelex doesn’t accept Apple pay

    Travelex doesn’t accept Apple pay I paid with Apple Pay with the exact card I registered online. After that, travelex told me that they don’t accept Apple Pay and it will take days to get my money back. They told me that their procedure requires the card number to be the same as the card but given that Apple Pay creates a unique card number Id for each payment, they cannot match it. This is the sign of a company not able to adapt to technology. Because of them, I am travelling to my wedding without the cash needed. Thanks Travelex! AVOID!

    Is Travelex incompetent or deliberately fraudulent? DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY ordered a pre-paid multi-currency card. received a 'dispatched' email promising to arrive within 5 working days. After 10 days and no show I had to travel without the card. I want my £1000 back!. (most of my holiday money) Customer services phone lines took all my details then stopped responding then after a minute of swooshing sounds hung up. I tried 5 times! the same procedure every time. I emailed; response; "you have to speak to us, because of 'sensitive date"' but they never rang back at the arranged time. If they had, the same would have happened, no doubt. ITS FRAUD!     Very disappointed with this service

    Very disappointed with this service. Once i was informed of fees I tried to access card online but service was down for extended period due to issues. I then forgot and with pandemic assumed they would not take fees given no one could go on holiday. Travelex would not refund fees so i have cancelled card. Really poor service. i would not recommend this card to anyone

    Not that impressed currently. There is little international travel to be had of late but I noticed, somewhat too late, that they are still charging an inactivity fee at £2.00 per month on my cash passport pre-paid currency card & they have for the past three months. This is in addition to the positive balance on my card. I wonder how many others have been caught out. Would it really be too hard for them to have waivered these charges in the current climate. Also their website kept sending me round in circles, stating some features were not working / try later....

    I would recommend Travelex

    My husband got me and my son a travelex card as we were going to Canada. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 that trip was cancelled. We asked to change the currency from Canadian dollars to American dollars and this was done. We are hoping to go the end of this year now. This isn’t the first travel card we have had. They are so much safer to use abroad. It is just like using your bank debit card. The funds are already on your card. You can check how much is left on it. If you lose it or it is stolen, it gets replaced. You can top it up via the website. I don’t think you can go wrong with one. Our experience with Travelex has been positive and I would recommend them

    Travelex Website is hanging when I'm trying to top up my currency card. I've never had great confidence in their website as it had spurious characters on it that do not give confidence. I reported this to their customer services but it was not corrected. Previously they also wrongly credited my card with GBP instead of Euro which they later apologised for but still not confidence building again.

    Good service on USD pick up

    Good service on USD pick up, purchased the USD with the ‘buy back’ option for an additional £3.99. On the return to the UK the Travelex desk refused to honour the buy back price saying he had been told that Travelex were not currently doing buy back. I gave the man the order number and the buy back reference and he wanted to see the actual email confirmation which I was unable to find. In my opinion to make it so difficult to get the buy back even with an order number and buy back reference i believe Travelex should remove this option as they appear to create so many hoops they clearly want the customer to fail and do not want to make this an easy option for the client.

    Due to last minute travel restrictions I was unable to take delivery of my order at home. Travelex were really helpful in enabling me to cancel my order. Another order for collection at Heathrow could have gone a bit smoother if it was communicated in advance which of their kiosks was available for collection. They were all closed save for one and I had to phone customer services to be told where to find the one open one. Other than that, excellent as always.

    Important in today’s contactless preferred environment.

    Important for me for the present when card payment is preferred and can be contactless also when used via my mobile phone. Being separate from my bank service card helps me to keep a closer eye on the smaller purchases. I use it for nearly all my personal food and short travel expenses.

    These guys have been taking £2.50 a month off my card balance as I cannot use the card because it’s expired. Been on the phone to them (somewhere in India) for over an hour and all they can do is tell me to cancel my existing card (which has expired so how am I supposed to do that ) and request a new card and they will transfer the balance. They won’t do this for me!!! Asked to speak to someone more senior and got fobbed off with they are busy and will call me back in a couple of hours!! Now been 6 hours and no call. If you take one of these cards and only use it once a year make sure you don’t leave any balance cos these guys will take it from you with no shame.

    Great concept and product but the buying experience and registration process is littered with technical glitches. Fix the 12 hour downtime of your UK website on 27/08 and 28/08. Fix the timeouts of purchasing the travel money card on your website. Fix the bug that doesn’t accept your password (at least the first two attempts) upon registering the travel money card on your website. Fix the online money card login screen - field name from being labelled “test” to what should be labelled username or email address.

    Fast service...and good exchange rate...only point I would make is that when ordering 800 plus Euros..it WOULD be good to get, say 3 or 4 x 100's...rather than only 4 x 50's...and then 15 x 20's....28 (!) x 10's..and a load of 5's....maybe give the customer a choice when ordering..?

    Continuing Nightmare

    After a few days of the website crashing I finally managed to order a Travelex money card. It arrived through the post as advised and the letter states the card must be activated by phoning 0800 260 0355. Over 3 weeks and hundreds of phone calls later the card still isn't activated because when you press option 4 (for card activation and pin services) it rings 4 times before the call is ended. So I tried a different option (3 then 2 for card features) to explain the problem. You guessed it after giving my card number the agent hung up on me. Tried again and again and finally got through to an agent who said she had activated the card but couldn't tell me about the pin number. Tried logging in the the app - not even been successful once. Thank goodness I am not going away imminently coz all our spending money is on this card that we can't access. Absolutely appalling service. I moved the money from Revolut thinking Travelex could be trusted more with large amounts of money. How wrong was I?!!!

    Another awful company just wanting to take money from you. My card had a balance of $91 and due to an inactivity fee I have been charged all of this money, just gone. Even though the card was expired in 2018 they can still charge a fee for not using the card...... the expired card. Again what a wonderful business premise to charge people for nothing! Avoid Avoid Avoid!

    I rang to report a lost card and to request a replacement I was told that the existing card would be stopped and that I cannot get a replacement as there was no staff available due to COVID 19 and I would need to apply fir a new card When applying for a new card it is unacceptable to be charged a delivery fee Once again Travelex not fit for purpose no thought for customers

    Overall good but online top up slow

    Overall the service is good, but these last two days have been very frustrated about how quick the online top up website times out. Stop for just a few moments to check a detail and you lose everything. Also, when it loads information it takes so long it times out again. Took me about six attempts to load my card.

    Disgusting customer service

    Disgusting customer service. Unable top up the stupid cash passport in any way because the stupid website crashes and the app is even worse. Called customer service and they failed me on security eventhough I gave all the correct answers and then when I objected she very kindly hung up on me!! Absolutely awful. We swap mich better app and service.

    DO NOT USE TRAVELEX OR HSBC TRAVEL MONEY

    Below one star. Went online to HSBC to order travel money. Website had a calendar to check a date that was suitable for home delivery. Checked next day. Worried when money did not arrive. My order confirmation specified next day home delivery. At the end of the confirmation “ If you have any queries regarding our Travel Money Online Service, or an order you have placed online, please contact the Travelex Customer Service Team on 0345 301 2781 . Please quote your order reference number, or be ready to advise your full name, contact telephone number, date of order, address, amount of order in £ and date of delivery, as applicable. Lines are open Mon- Fri 08.30-17.30; Closed Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. To help us continually improve our service and in the interests of security, we may monitor and/or record your communications with us.” The phones have all been disconnected “due to Covid” (bizarre as you can’t catch Covid over the phone). Money taken from my HSBC account. No sign of my money. Waited in all day. Now trying to get HSBC to refund. Incidentally at the same time as I placed the HSBC order, I ordered via the post office. Got email and phone confirmation. Money arrived next day at 8.30 am. DO NOT use Travelex or HSBC Travel money

    Travelex gave us a better rate than the bank. I was a little surprised that the delivery guy just gave the money to one of my housemates without checking for me or for my ID. I was also surprised to find a £40 charge for cash on my credit card. There should have been a warning. Would it be the same if I used a Debit card/
