Pros and Cons

Pro: When you’re that big, you must be doing something right. The number one reason to purchase car insurance from State Farm is that it’s number one in size. It has expert agents in every corner of the United States, no matter how big or small, and its strong credit rating attests to its financial strength and ability to pay out on claims.

Other pros to using State Farm include: a mobile app that allows you to download your policy documents and file and track a claim; ride share insurance to motorists in 42 states; and the Steer Clear program, which encourages safe-driving behavior among drivers aged 25 and younger.

Con: As with any big company, there are also a couple of cons, namely that State Farm doesn’t always offer the cheapest rates, and that it doesn’t offer as many discount programs as some of its competitors.

Types of Auto Insurance

State Farm offers the following types of car insurance coverage:

Liability. Covers Bodily Injury liability and Property Damage liability. Pays for the other party’s medical expenses, vehicle repairs, or property damage if you were at fault in an accident.

Collision. Pays for repair or replacement of your vehicle if it’s involved in a collision with another vehicle or object, regardless of who was at fault.

Comprehensive. Pays for repairs and replacement resulting from anything other than a collision, such as theft, vandalism, fire, flood, or hitting an animal.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motor Vehicle. Protects you when you’re involved in an accident caused by someone who doesn’t have any liability coverage or doesn’t have sufficient liability coverage to cover expenses.

Medical Payments. Pays for medical expenses or funeral expenses if you or any of your passengers are injured or killed in an accident.

Car Rental and Travel Expenses. Covers the cost of renting a replacement vehicle while your car is being repaired.

Emergency Road Service. Helps you when you’ve broken down and need a tire change, jump-start, fuel delivery, or lockout services.

Rideshare Driver Coverage. Add-on for drivers who work for rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft.

State Farm also offers these special types of vehicle insurance:

Teen Car Insurance. Competitive rates for policy holders with teen and young drivers. Includes Steer Clear, a program that helps drivers aged less than 25 improve their driving skills and reduce their insurance costs.

Rental Car Insurance. State Farm’s collision and comprehensive coverage carries over to any rental vehicles. However, if you don’t own a car or if your personal car insurance has a high deductible State Farm can offer you appropriate rental car coverage.

Sports Car Insurance. Sports car insurance is typically very expensive, but State Farm says it can help you take a few steps to reduce the cost of your coverage.

Antique & Classic Car Insurance. As with sports cars, vintage cars also require their own type of insurance – and State Farm can help you out.

Business Auto Insurance. For businesses with multiple vehicles, featuring all the same types of coverage as State Farm’s personal car insurance.

How to Apply

There are two ways of applying for a quote and purchasing car insurance: by getting an auto quote online or by speaking to one of State Farm’s 18,000 agents. It takes only a few minutes to buy coverage online, using the following steps:

  1. On the State Farm website, under the heading “Get an Auto Quote”, enter your zip code and press "Go".
  2. Enter basic personal details, including name, address, and date of birth.
  3. Enter vehicle information (for up to four vehicles). Include the year, make model, and body style. If you have access to your vehicle identification number (VIN), you can enter this to save time.
  4. Enter additional vehicle information, such as how it is financed, what you use it for, and annual mileage.
  5. Enter information for all policyholders, including how long each driver has had their license and whether any of the drivers have had traffic violations.
  6. Enter additional driving history for all policy holders, including information about at-fault accidents or minor convictions in the past 6 years, any major convictions in the past 10 years, or any license suspensions or revocations.
  7. Provide information about your current insurer and policy, if you have existing car insurance. This is also the section where you would add certain information if you wish to apply for Vehicle Safety or Drive Safe & Save discounts
  8. Next, you’ll see your quote. You can choose from a cheaper Basic package, a Standard package, or a Premium package with enhanced coverage and extras. You can view any of these three packages and customize things like deductibles and add-ons to finalize your policy. You’ll then be given the chance to save the quote or purchase immediately.

Filing a Claim

Policy holders may file claims online, over the phone, or by post. To file or manage a claim online, simply use your State Farm log in details and enter information about the accident plus supporting information. State Farm has a large team of claims representatives and, judging by online feedback, it has an overall positive reputation for handling claims quickly and effectively.

Anyone looking for new insurance or needs a change from their current insurance company should take a look at State Farm
I have to start with how easy and smooth my newly assigned agent got me through the whole process. He was extremely knowledgeable and helped me get the coverage I needed and not the unnecessary plans. He found me several discounts and the ending monthly premium was inexpensive. He worked with me after normal hours so I wouldn't have to miss work. I went through a State Farm run by Tod Nelson but all the credit needs to go with David the agent who helped me and went above and beyond...

State Farm Insurance offers commendable…
State Farm Insurance offers commendable service that goes above and beyond when it comes to claim fulfillment. My experience involving a stolen bicycle was a testament to their commitment, as they not only replaced the bike but upgraded it to a carbon fiber frame - an unexpected but greatly appreciated gesture. However, it's worth noting that they may take a strict stance on risk evaluation, as evidenced by my policy cancellation due to living in a high theft area. Despite this setback, the overall positive experience and their comprehensive offerings led me back to State Farm for my home, auto, and umbrella insurance needs. I would recommend them for their excellent claim resolution, though it's advisable to consider the area you live in and its potential impact on your policy.

LIKE A VERY BAD NEIGHBOR, STATE FARM IS THERE SHAFTING ITS TRUSTING CUSTOMERS!
A more-valid version of the well-known State Farm insurance slogan would be: LIKE A VERY BAD NEIGHBOR, STATE FARM IS THERE TO SHAFT ITS CUSTOMERS! Indeed, the local Allan Sarafyan State Farm agency in Van Nuys, CA manages to combine incompetence and negligence with fake explanations for its many errors on all of our policies -- bullet-point pseudo-explanations written with all the skill of a third-grader whose English abilities are profoundly lacking! PERHAPS THEIR WORST ERROR IN OUR CASE HAS BEEN CONTINUING TO CHARGE US FOR A RENTER INSURANCE POLICY EVEN AFTER THE AGENCY WAS NOTIFIED THAT WE HAD MOVED AND NO LONGER LIVED AT THE POLICY LOCATION -- while then refusing to refund their ongoing invalid charges, or to prevent further such incorrect charges. BUT THAT BLUNDER WAS ONLY THE TOP OF THE SARAFYAN STATE FARM AGENCY ICEBERG OF ERROR -- THE AGENCY ALSO FAILED TO REDUCE OUR AUTO INSURANCE AS WE HAD DEMANDED ONCE OUR CAR WAS PUT AWAY AND STORED, WHILE ALSO REFUSING TO JUSTIFY OR EXPLAIN ITS ENDLESS MONTHLY RATE INCREASES! THE ONLY STORY WE GOT WAS THAT THEY HAD GOTTEN BEHIND ON MAKING POLICY UPDATES DUE TO BEING SO BUSY -- APPARENTLY,TOO BUSY TO BE COMPETENT OR CORRECT, OR TO HANDLE ROUTINE POLICY CHANGES EFFICIENTLY -- OR EVEN TO MAKE THOSE CHANGES AFTER PROMISING THEM! NOR WILL STATE FARM CORPORATE LEVEL ASSIST, OR TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION -- BEWARE THESE INCOMPETENT PRICE GOUGERS, AS COMPLAINTS ARE BEING FILED WITH INSURANCE REGULATORY AUTHORITIES, NOT ONLY IN CALIFORNIA BUT IN EVERY OTHER STATE WHERE THEY GOUGE INNOCENT AND TRUSTING CLIENTS LIKE MYSELF AND MY WIFE, WITH THEIR ERRORS, BLUNDERS, AND ATROCIOUS RUDENESS. SHAME ON THE ALLAN SARAFYAN AGENCY, AND ON ITS STATE FARM PARENT FIRM -- THIS COMES FROM A RETIRED PROF OF INSURANCE AND LAW, WHO HAS BEEN GRATUITIOUSLY ABUSED BY STATE FARM AND BY ITS SARAFYAN AGENCY -- BOTH OF WHICH ARE, INDEED, VERY BAD NEIGHBORS!

A Disheartening Experience with Travelers and State Farm Insurance Companies
Dear Trust Pilot, I am writing to share a deeply disappointing experience my father has had with Travelers and State Farm insurance companies following an accident caused by poor road conditions. In late August, while driving on Circle Blvd in Corvallis during road construction, my father's Nissan Quest van was severely damaged by a poorly marked cutout in the road. This incident has led to a series of frustrations with both insurance providers, Travelers and State Farm. The city of Corvallis had contracted a company for road repair, and despite clear violations of safety procedures and responsibility on the contractor's part, Travelers quickly absolved them of any wrongdoing. Subsequently, my father, who had full comprehensive coverage, was advised by the construction company's insurance representative, Mike Thurman, to approach his own insurance provider, State Farm. State Farm's handling of the situation has been nothing short of disheartening. They imposed several conditions on my father, such as obtaining a salvage title for the wrecked vehicle, before considering financial compensation. The process was further complicated by delays caused by a lien placed on the van by a State Farm claims adjuster, hindering my father's ability to seek a second opinion on the repairable condition of the vehicle. Despite being a loyal customer of State Farm for many years and facing health challenges, including three heart attacks, my father has been led on a bureaucratic wild goose chase. The insurance company's demands for paperwork, multiple trips to the DMV, and promises of financial reimbursement have left my father in a state of uncertainty and financial strain. To add to the frustration, State Farm initially agreed to settle for a seemingly low-ball offer of $4,130, promising payment on a specific date. However, this promise was not honored, and my father was informed that it could take an additional three weeks to a month before the compensation is fulfilled. As a result of this ongoing ordeal, my father had to dip into his savings, amounting to $10,000, to purchase a comparable vehicle for his transportation needs. The lack of urgency and empathy from both Travelers and State Farm reflects poorly on their commitment to their customers' well-being and safety. I am compelled to share this account to caution others about the inadequate business ethics and customer service exhibited by these insurance companies. It is my hope that others can learn from my father's unfortunate experience and avoid similar mistreatment. In conclusion, my family and I express our sincere disappointment with the handling of this situation by Travelers and, particularly, State Farm. It is our belief that insurance companies should prioritize the well-being of their customers and act promptly and responsibly in times of need. Thank you for your attention. Sincerely, William Walker Jr
