Pros and Cons

Pro: Doc Auto’s biggest selling point is its personal touch. By restricting its operations to 5 states, it’s able to put time and effort to ensure its customers have the right level of coverage. Doc Auto sells all types of coverage, but it promises to sell you only the types you need. For example, if the value of your vehicle minus deductible is getting close to what you pay for comprehensive and collision each year, Doc Auto will point this out to you. With Doc Auto, you won’t end up paying for extras you don’t need.

Con: The Doc Auto website could do with a makeover. It doesn’t offer a great deal of information about the different types of coverage. What’s more, residents of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, aren’t given the option of applying online. The website isn’t a deal-breaker, but it does mean the service isn’t as convenient as it could be.

Types of Auto Insurance

Doc Auto offers liability coverage that meets legal state minimums, plus comprehensive and collision coverage with variable limits.

Bodily Injury Liability. Covers all expenses related to bodily injuries suffered by other drivers when you are at fault. Compulsory in TX, AL, GA, SC; voluntary in Florida.

Property Damage Liability. Covers all expenses related to damage of another person’s property when you are at fault. Compulsory in all 5 states.

Collision. Covers expenses related to vehicle repair and replacement if your vehicle is damaged in a collision, regardless of who was at fault. Voluntary in all 5 states.

Comprehensive. Covers repairs and replacement if your vehicle suffers damage in a non-collision incident such as fire, flood, vandalism, theft, or hitting an animal. Voluntary in all 5 states.

Personal Injury Protection. Covers medical and rehabilitation expenses, and in some cases lost wages for you and any passengers, no matter who was at fault. Compulsory in Florida, voluntary in the other 4 states.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist. Covers the other driver’s liabilities if they are uninsured or underinsured. Voluntary in all 5 states where Doc Auto does business.

SR-22 and FR-44 certificate. These are two different types of documents that some states require of high-risk drivers.

Additional Features

Because Doc Auto works with multiple insurance carriers, it is able to find its customers a range of useful add-ons and features. Following are a few examples.

Gap coverage. If your car has a total loss, this covers the gap between the depreciated value and what you still owe.

Rental reimbursement. If your vehicle is in the shop due to a covered accident, this covers the cost of renting a temporary replacement.

Roadside assistance. If you’re stuck out on the interstate or the back roads, this ensures swift emergency assistance.

Rideshare coverage. For people who use their vehicle for work with ridesharing platforms like Uber, this provides suitable coverage.

Discounts and rewards. Doc Auto’s partners offer a bunch of discount opportunities. Common discounts include homeownership, financial stability, credit score, marriage, and a safe driving record.

How to Apply

As discussed, Florida and Texas residents may ask for a quote and purchase car insurance online (through Doc Auto’s partner Clutch Insurance). Residents of all 5 states where Doc Auto operates may call directly to get a quote from a licensed insurance agent. Doc Auto offers detailed, personalized insurance. This means the application process can take longer than average, but the potential savings make it worthwhile.

Before requesting a quote, prepare in advance to provide the following information:

  • Vehicle info: Year, make, model, and ownership type.

  • Possible discounts: Airbag type, anti-theft device type, and anti-lock brakes.

  • Driver details: Name, date of birth, marital status, phone number, email.

  • License details: License type (US-only for Florida residents, US or foreign for Texas), license status, years of license in the US, license state, yes/no to question about SR-22.

  • Disclosures: Traffic violations in last 3 years, plus any claims.

  • Additional discounts: Number of personal injury protection claims in last 3 years, years licensed, credit rating, type of home.

Filing a Claim

The Doc Auto website doesn’t state anything about claims, so we’re assuming that all claims go through the insurance carrier directly without help from Doc Auto itself. With that said, it’s worth asking Doc Auto about the claims process before going ahead and purchasing a policy. As a general rule, Doc Auto’s partners accept claims via one or more of the following methods: phone, fax, online, app, SMS.

Contact Details

Doc Auto is based in Florida and is a member of Manatee Chamber of Commerce and Professional Insurance Agents of Florida. It has Better Business Bureau accreditation. Doc Auto’s team of licensed agents offer support during regular business hours Monday to Friday and for a few hours Saturday.
