Pros and Cons

Clutch’s greatest strength is its local network of independent agents in Florida and Texas. Instead of casting a wide net, Clutch chooses to focus on its strength – building local relationships in two states. As a result, Clutch is able to match users with expert independent agents spread throughout Florida and Texas – from big cities like Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Houston, Dallas, and Austin, to the more remote parts of both states.

The one problem with the Clutch Insurance platform is the lack of customer service. To speak to an independent agent about rates, you’ll need to fill out an online form – which requires giving over details about you, other drivers, and your vehicle(s). Clutch doesn’t offer telephone support, live chat, or any other way of contacting a customer service rep during business hours.

Types of Auto Insurance

Clutch works with a large network of agents representing dozens of insurers in Florida and Texas. Partnering insurance companies offer all the standard types of auto insurance required by drivers in Florida and Texas.

Bodily Injury Liability. Covers all expenses related to bodily injuries suffered by other drivers when you are at fault. Compulsory in Texas and voluntary in Florida.

Property Damage Liability. Covers all expenses related to damage of another person’s property when you are at fault. Compulsory in both Texas and Florida.

Collision. Covers expenses related to vehicle repair and replacement if your vehicle is damaged in a collision, regardless of who was at fault. Voluntary in both states.

Comprehensive. Covers repairs and replacement if your vehicle suffers damage in a non-collision incident such as fire, flood, vandalism, theft, or hitting an animal. Voluntary in both states.

Personal Injury Protection. Covers medical and rehabilitation expenses, and in some cases lost wages for you and any passengers, no matter who was at fault. Compulsory in Florida, voluntary in Texas.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist. Covers the other driver’s liabilities if they are uninsured or underinsured. Voluntary in both states.

Additional Features

One of the benefits of using a brokering platform with a large network of partners is that you can find virtually any type of vehicle insurance feature or add-on. We looked at some of Clutch’s top partners and found a wide variety of features, including the following.

Multiple discounts. Discounts for EZ-pay (electronic pay), paid in full, prior insurance, being a homeowner, advance quote, preferred driver, bundling with other types of insurance.

Penalty waivers. 10-30 days lapse in previous coverage allowed, with certain conditions.

Accident waivers. Up to two accidents per driver within 36 months accepted.

Credit discounts. In Florida, some Clutch partners offer discounts to drivers with excellent credit.

Higher limits. In Texas, some Clutch partners offer higher coverage limits in exchange for a higher premium.

Rental reimbursement. Covers the cost of a rental car when your regular vehicle is in the shop due to a covered accident.

Emergency assistance. Includes towing and locksmith services, for times when you’re stuck on the highway and need assistance.

Multiple licenses. In Texas, some Clutch partners accept foreign and international driver’s license.

SR-22. In Texas, some of Clutch’s partners accept SR-22 applicants.

How to Apply

It’s super easy to apply for a quote from Clutch Insurance. Simply go to the Clutch Insurance home page and enter your zip code (Florida and Texas only) at the prompts to begin. Clutch supports English and Spanish.

Before filling out the form, prepare in advance to provide the following information:

Vehicle info: Year, make, model, and ownership type.

Possible discounts: Airbag type, anti-theft device type, and anti-lock brakes.

Driver details: Name, date of birth, marital status, phone number, email.

License details: License type (US-only for Florida residents, US or foreign for Texas), license status, years of license in the US, license state, yes/no to question about SR-22.

Disclosures: Traffic violations in last 3 years, plus any claims.

Additional discounts: Number of personal injury protection claims in last 3 years, years licensed in FL/TX, credit rating, type of home.

Note that you can click a button at the top-right corner of the application page at any time during the process to see contact details of your assigned insurance agent.

Filing a Claim

One of the things to be aware of when using a matching service is that it won’t help you with any claims. Once Clutch assigns you to an agent and insurance company, its job is done (until the next time you need to renew your auto insurance coverage). To make a claim, you’ll need to go through the usual channels offered by the insurance company you sign up with.

Contact Details

Clutch Insurance is owned and operated by Windhaven Insurance, an insurance company that underwrites auto insurance and provides other insurance-related services. As mentioned, Clutch isn’t strong on customer service. The only point of contact available is email at clutchsupport@windhaven.com

Summary

If you live in Florida or Texas and need to purchase or renew your auto coverage, Clutch is a good place to start. Clutch matches users with up to 16 auto insurance deals – and instead of putting you in touch with unhelpful insurance companies, it connects you directly with expert local insurance agents. The Clutch service is completely free to use, and it only takes 1-2 minutes to fill out the online form and see which insurers you get matched with.
